Great job, once again - covering a song and literally doing her best to take it as her own forever. Loved to hear it

Her tone, her breathiness and smooth raspiness makes her version even better than Whitney's. She doesn't cover songs, she uncovers them ❤️

At her last concert on July 10th 2022, when Angelina told why she sings this song and dedicated it to her grandmother Mery Zamani, I understand this song completely differently. Before it was a beautiful song sung great, now it touches my heart every time. I'm absolutely certain that this video and the Elvis cover was recorded at the same time and in the same venue, well before Angelina's trip to Norway (Angelina did a TV performance there with two songs and 3 sold out concerts, there are many YT videos of it, info for the people who didn't know it yet) . Both high-end produced videos were produced by Angelina's own label. 💯 *AJ* 💯

Whatever you might have heard It was not an overdub, or a second take, she has always done full takes on her studio recordings even as a young child. She has been complimented by seasoned musicians for being one of the few singers in the business able to do so.

A reactor who is a vocal jazz teacher comments on her use of space and back phrasing as something learned in her jazz background. Another says she uses taking a breath as a note, a critical part of her performance, and a reason she likes sensitive mics. I'll have to take their word for it.

Hi .. so far as I know Angelina is able to sing between B2 and D5 .. and someone said "Angelina is a Master of 'negative' Space.. " .. like you mentioned she use the space with reverb of the room and continue right when it slightly disappear .. This song she did as the last of 18 Songs on her 1,5 Hour Concert on 10th July .. That Concert was something else .. not to say Stellar ..

A long time ago I was watching a vocal coach reacting to Angelina singing when she was 9, 10 years old and she said the one thing that she was so impressed with Angelina is her understanding of the importance of negative space in a song. How amazing it was that she understood it at that young age, and some singers never understand it.

She sounds almost identical in her live version from Norway. The thing was, it was done for TV and there were some technical problems so she had to perform it twice about 3 minutes apart and they used take 2. I can’t imagine singing this type of song back to back.

Listening to her interpret a song is a study of amazing craftsmanship and artistry. This is what she has been leading up to and perfecting for nearly ten years. 'm a musician and a singer, and your comments always add something I hadn't noticed before -- in this case, your insight on the introduction, where AJ comes in after the intro fades completely, perfectly on pitch (as I've often said, AJ BREATHES on pitch -- check it out). Brilliant. AJ controls her mixed voice with both raspiness and breathiness -- so the transition is so seamless. She pulls raspy voice and breathy voice into her mixed voice so it's really hard to say -- okay, she's in chest voice, or she's in mixed voice. It's so remarkable because I actually don't know when she's in one or the other. And she sustains her vibrato throughout every transition. Also, how she begins notes is so clean -- so very clean. I just can't think of anyone who can move between registers with so much control and precision.

I've noticed that Angelina's voiced has dropped a bit in the past year or so. The tone has gotten deeper, richer, and rounder, as well. It's a testament to her skills that she can deliver a fulfilling diva performance like this one. She's in the studio here and has lowered the key about a step and a half from the studio version she recorded at age 13. She sang in this lower key in her recent outdoor performance at the Borderlands in Norway. That was not unexpected for a live performance. It seems here she's committed to that lower key in the studio, as well. Here's the link to her studio recording at age 13. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4iX2NiIZqWZedI.html ... Happy Birthday, Jess. I appreciate your technical expertise and with all you've heard and said this is why I just can't wait for a studio album from Angelina. Yes yes, I love her live performances, that's how I discovered her for myself as little tiny munchkin channeling Billie Holiday and other greats from the past. But the world needs to hear this gift of vocal genius and the only way that happens is over the airwaves from an album of studio recordings. As I was watching and listening to this I thought of Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and all the other great recorded singers of the past and the fact that it's been a while since there has been a talent this big. I was never a fan of those singers as I was into more progressive rock and roll but I knew and could hear and had respect for their talent. Angelina is not a half dressed pop princess with dancers. She is at sixteen one of the best ever singers who deserves a very big stage. She sets a very very high bar.

What an awesome reaction & input. I'm glad you had a great B-day. As you mentioned, Angie is a master of the positive & negative space. So far we know she can sing a F5-G5 also she can add vocal distortion to it if she wants. We don't know how much higher she can sing until she does it or tells us. She does have an even more impressive low range though. Check out more from Angie’s 3 concerts in Norway, 7-1-22 in Kurbadhagen, 7-7-22 at Kongsberg & 7-10-22 again at Kurbadhagen. Angie had a lot of fun & so did the fans. (Mattias Axelsson, Vidar Enerud, Kathrine Angeltveit & Trond Andersen are good channels to start with. They have some good recordings & video's) Angie also has a Vevo account.

I love your analysis both vocally and technically. The control of the negative space is a typical jazz thing and yes she is very good at it. The dead silence before she started singing is indeed a tension builder. I wonder how much is just her singing abilities and how much comes from sound engineering. Perhaps a side by side comparison with her performance at Allsang pa grensen could shed a light on that. I know nearly nothing of it, so really just wondering. She dedicated this song to her recovering grandmother when she performed it during her latest concert on the 10th of July. That compared with this wonderful performance where power, softness, strength, delicateness, conviction keep coming in and out, gives this song to me a very different meaning, a very personal emotional meaning. Thanks!

An interviewer once asked the great jazz pianist and bandleader, Count Basie, why his improvisations were so sparse. Basie said, "I've spent my whole career learning where NOT to play." It seems Angelina has learned that principle at a very early age.

I am not sure how high she goes. It historically was not her strong point. Lately, she has discovered a new resonance chamber for her high register. As demonstrated with "Mount Everest" live at Kongsberg: kzread.info/dash/bejne/do2K2tCSYJmoh9o.html&ab_channel=RustyShackleford I think it is here she really is showing off new prowess (that is also possible to hear when listening to her previous (home) studio recording of "I have nothing" compared to this new one from some 3-4 years ago). There one can hear her needing to strain slightly for the high notes. Now she feels like she has all the space of the universe up there. More evidence that although AJ may be the most significant female vocal talent since decades she is also putting in ALL the hours of training and schooling of her instrument. Excellent reaction as always 👍

I do believe that second vocal used for that one phrase belongs to Whitney herself.

Angelina has performed ‘I Have Nothing’ three times (I’m grouping all the live versions together). The original- kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4iX2NiIZqWZedI.html - has 14.5 million views and the live version - kzread.info/dash/bejne/c6Woq7iSds3HoLQ.html - has 1.3 million views in less than 3 weeks, it is the Official version - kzread.info/dash/bejne/m4xkyZtymrGYZrg.html - has more than 100,000 views in two days. Not only is the Official version the best it has the potential to vastly outstrip the other versions by the end of the year if not earlier. I personally think the Official version is better than Whitney Houston’s version.

Your doing a wonderful job with these reactions. You certainly add a lot interesting points and comments making this experience very unique. Keep doing what you are doing. Mentioned in the comments was her first time singing Labyrinths "Mt. Everest" live at Kongsberg festival in Norway. Here is a 4K UHD recording by Chris Walker and edited by Rusty Shackleford so the quality is excellent....a different side of Angelina here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/do2K2tCSYJmoh9o.html.

I think all the pauses she takes, she does on purpose for a reason, and that is based on how she feels the song should sound like.

IMHO Angelina's 2019 rendition of "I Have Nothing" is more Whitney and this rendition is more Angelina. The 2019 rendition emphasizes the higher parts of her range, as a 13 year old trys to capture Whitney, and this rendition is fuller Angelina. ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4iX2NiIZqWZedI.html ).

Great reaction. I know you’re very knowledgeable when it comes to music so I’m going to ask you a question. Do you think by giving Angelina at 1 1/2 a toy microphone influenced where she’s at today, most children don’t have a toy microphone in there toy box? What effect did by grandma filming so much of Angelina did it have on her when she first auditioned for Norway’s got talent at 7 there doesn’t seem to be any nervousness or anxiety before or when she performed how is that possible or was she just a pro at hiding it at 7 years old? Surely you must know what it was like your first time performing in front of a large audience.

If there were a way to tally up the opinions around the world I suspect there's more than enough who are convinced Angelina Jordan is, at 16, already the G.O.A.T. Logic says that is premature or irrational. But does that matter? If Angelina can make people feel she is the best ever isn't that the same as being so? She has been baffling for years and what's ahead is unimaginable.

Has anybody noticed she tends to touch her hair to take off her face. She has done it for a long time. I know it’s irrelevant when you are watching a super star who is about to explode onto the whole world

What do you think that was with the double vocals for that short duration? Do you think it was a mistake or something? Somebody threw a switch at the wrong time?

  • @matthiasmuer5957

    @matthiasmuer5957

I don't think so. The short double part is in the original studio version of Whitney as well and Ariana Grande did the same thing when she performed the song live (!) in front of the Obamas. Both at the exact same moment in the song. I think it's a nod to the original and to Whitney Houston.
