it strikes me that none of helmet designers simplified the helmet via the "motorhelmet" closed chin protection piece... for sure that would stiffen the helmet at the lower part considerably, and protects against phalanx spear penetration perfectly , which seems to have been the ORIGINAL motivation of ever increasing skull protection. ..

My school, McHenry High School, were called the warriors. We also had Greek/ Spartan inspiration for our mascot, Leonidas :))

It's the late Byzantium (East Roman Empire) which destroyed hellenism, beginning with the Emperor Constantine. However, the greatest persecutions, torture and executions occurred with the Emperor Theodosius, who also ensured that all temples were desecrated, destroyed and that anyone with the title of Hellene was held accountable if they did not convert to Christianity. The Greeks today are not Christians because they wanted to be, but because they did not want to be. With the banning and closing of academies, high schools and philosophical teachings, knowledge disappeared and dogmatic faith came to the foreground. Histories and school material were deliberately elaborated to hide the Dark Ages, to hide truths, including changes in time and physical facts. In Greece, the pressure was strongest to mentally enslave free Greeks forever. The only thing that exists today are Greeks who live according to the Roman system, both education and religion, of course all in Greek so that it makes sense. Of course, the knowledge is not completely lost, but the Greeks have become too comfortable to bother with it, they accept the life they are used to, so foreigners will rule Greece until the Greeks have learned who they are and what power they have. Our ethnic "religion" was banned by Theodosius about 1700 years ago and is now official again. Either you are a Hellene or a Christian, both are not possible, whether you like it or not is uninteresting.

@@user-if7lp1bq8n I totally disagree. Eastern Roman Empire didn't destroy hellenic culture. In fact this Empire is the medieval greek state. Greek language, culture and people were dominant. Christianity was a new religion for Greeks. They just accepted Jesus Christ as their God. I didn't said anywhere I don't know about my history. I read history since I was child. I just wrote that I didn't know so much about ancient Greek helmets. Both ancient Greece and Byzantium are our history. And we should be proud of it.

@@greeceballthegreat1350 The schools and universities covers the real history, if you research you will find the right answers. The byzantium destroyed hellenism, the temples, the sculptures... You can find the christian cross on temples or statues, akropolis was transformed to church. We ethnic hellenes know very well what was happened, you realy should research my friend! Only the Graikoi adopted the christianity, that's why these greeks called themselves Ρωμαίοι. After spitting in two parts of the roman empire, the roman greeks settled down in anatolia and created the byzantium, the eagle symbol on the flag is the symbol of the roman empire! Emperor Constantine adopted christianity and threatened everyone to death if they wouldn't accept christianity. He also killed his wife and his son. The ancient libraries were burned down like the library in alexandria. There was NO reason for hellenes to adopt christianity, because they followed a philosophical way, the ΑΡΕΤΉ and they did incredible things with their open minds. Would you change your religion today if someone would explain to you how real his religion is ? Of course not.... We can explain everything, believe me! Hi, I'm from Germany, and for 2 main reasons you don't come across the spartan helmet as a logo for schools, universities or sportsclubs so much. First most institutions here where founded prior to the Renaissance and secondly academics here aren't comfortable with glorifying spartan society, history or ethos because of the nazis obsession for it and how they used it as part of their justification to "purify" the Arian race from the sick, disabled, gay or "inferior races. I greatly enjoy your videos keep up the great work.

@marios gianopoulos I went to school in 90s Germany. Antiquity was a topic in ONE year, when we were 10/11 years old. The rest of history classes concentrated on Germany from the 30 years war to the 19th century (ww2 and after where a subject of social studies instead). Tldr: education about ancient history was lousy, without ideological reasons

@Epimetheus I've to say - as someone who is working on a master's thesis about atypical helmets in Greek Art of the 6th and 5th centuries BC - that your video is very well done. I've to say that i'm quite amazed to see such good work on KZread about Ancient Greek weapons. I just wanted to add that the Corinthian helmet (as other helmet type) was used all over the Greek world (city states in mainland Greece, Ionian Greeks and their colonies) aswell by other culture like the Etruscans, not only the Spartans. And I would like to know how you can say that the warrior depicted on the red-figure attic vase at 4:10 is a spartan. As we know that there is very little clues that tell us that vase depictions are to be understood as real life representation.

@@tosk2098 Most likely yes, greek helmets were worn by other cultures in contact with Greeks all over the Mediterranean. As far as in the 1960s the archeologist A. Snodgrass claimed that the helmet was from the Peloponnese. And among the circa 350 helmets found in Olympia, 41 are from the illyrian type. But for some reasons the helmet is very rarely depicted on attic vases.

My High school's Rugby team was the Claremont Spartans, and yes, they used the Corinthian Helmet on their logo. Saanich, British Columbia. I played hockey and I preferred to keep my vision clear. I like the Attic style helmet for its unimpeded vision, improving situational awareness.

I would love to see a more in-depth vid or a series of vids on Hellenic equipment.

I don't think the "Spartan helmet" is a common logo elsewhere, certainly not for sports teams. A reason may be because American football is only played in the USA and no other sport uses helmets, at least not as prominently nor elaboratedly. American football is an extremely armored sport without equivalent anywhere else (closest would be rugby but helmets are seldom used and when they are they are mere leather helmets). Another reason may be is that university and sports don't mix that intensely elsewhere: universities are a place for study and research, sports team may exist (or not) but when they exist they are entertainment for students, not a big deal for the university itself, similarly there are no fraternities/sororities nor anything like that, as at least in Europe, people live outside the university campus, which is often close to their family home and accessible by public transport. You go to the university for classes and exams, maybe the occasional extra-curricular activity at most, the rest of the life happens outside (this is also true for lower education levels). As for the name "Spartan", there is one such football (soccer) team named Spartak from Moscow, but I believe the name actually comes from the name Spartacus, the slave revolt leader, adopted by some German communists around 1918. The main feeling "Spartan" may transmit in Europe is probably that of "living an austere life without commodities" rather than "bravest of warriors". There's in general much less cultural enthusiasm for warriors and war anyhow than in the USA: I can barely think of any sort of revered military hero, maybe because we have fought so much against each other and suffered so much from wars that these are seen for what they really are: catastrophes rather than "arenas of honor", as depicted in some movies and such. Maybe the closest thing to warrior heroes we have are little people that fight against the powerful ones, like Robin Hood, Wilhelm Tell or the already mentioned Spartacus. In many cases their names are not even known, like the Basques who defeated Charlemagne at Roncevaux, but they are celebrated every August 15th nevertheless, because we feel they are like us: nameless and weak but still able of great feats thanks to smarts and dare. We're more Athenian or even Arcadian than Spartan, really.

The Pilos was also considered assosaieted with Beotian some times, which kinda makes sense if you think about it because if you look at what we call Beotian, it's just a Pilos with back and side extensions for extra protection. There is more things you could cover about the Thracian and Phrygian helmet but good video overall.

Just browse "Sea Peoples" in image search: most didn't even use helmets at all but fancy hair-dressing of some sort, others wore them top-only with horns, the Shardana, quite possibly ancient Sardinians. After writing the above, I wonder if they brought the very concept of helmet to the Eastern Mediterranean. But that doesn't make sense, does it? Especially because some other groups did use some sort of chest armor, they were not exactly unarmored... Didn't Epimetheus make a video on the Sea Peoples? Someone did, I watched it discussing the body armor of whoever that ethnicity were.

It made me mad that spartans in total war rome 2 dont have those classic greek helmets :D Those are honestly the most badass looking helmets of human history, i remember my pops made me such helmet from cardboard, even with that red tail thing on the top and i loved every second while playing soldier in it 😀

I deployed with the USMC unit MWCS-28, called the Spartans which used the helmet as a logo.

Hello. I made a helmet in fiberglass. Next I made a mould of it. Next I'll do casts in clay. Or in paraphine wax. This can become the model for a lost wax cast in metal. I will also explore electro plating. kzread.info/dash/bejne/o3qmrY9rhau0eLQ.html

My favorite? Middle period (500 BCE) Corinthian helmets, preferably of Etruscan manufacture. I have two reproductions, one hand-patinated brass, uncrested (Deepeeka "Early Spartan"): a cherished display piece; one crested, bronze-finished iron (Windlass): a rough-and-ready field piece. The Deepeka is the only wearable reproduction I've come across that TRULY captures the graceful, mysterious, evocative, iconic, and [yes] somewhat creepy look of the original museum pieces I have seen. All these qualities are enhanced by the browning, then verdigris treatments I painstakingly applied to it.

Illyrian language hasn't been discovered so we can't really know, there are many Albanian propaganda but we really don't know

However, it should be noted that metallic versions of Phrygian Caps also became quite popular during the Classical Era in both Phrygia and Macedonia, and this type of "Brygian" helmet was widely used later on, in the Macedonian Phalanxes deviced by Philip II, and with some alterations it was also used in some cavalry units. And yet, during the 3d c BCE the Phrygian helm got replaced by the #Thracian helm (improvement of the #Chalcidician), while throughout the 4th to 1st c BCE, and beyond, cavalry prefered the badass #Boeotian helm instead, with its superior design, far better shaped than even modern helmets, like the Stahlhelm, and the Kevlar PASGT.
