Donning hoplite armour

Some game systems have rules on how long it takes to put on armour. Here I give you some practical hints as to how long it actually takes. Yes, the sword and shield are just mock-ups, but the time it takes to take them up is probably about the same as the real thing.
Was this really shot in ancient Greece? No, it was a park in Gosforth, near a primary school and with aircraft flying overhead and a breeze just strong enough to create constant rustling of leaves and occasional wind noise on the microphones.

    Toby V. Spartan hoplites were of a much higher social status than those from other Greek cities. This is because Sparta’s citizenry was largely upper class with a huge slave population while the other Greek states drew hoplites from the middle class.

    QualityPen other city states drew hoplites from their middle and upper classes alike, being part of a militia was seen as citizen privilege for those who could afford the armour. Hesiod writes a lot about the mix of classes in the archaic period. Saying that Spartan armies were of a much higher status than other Polis armies is a bit dismissive. While Spartiates (the true spartan citizens who were bred to be warriors) were the bulk of the force they did also mix in a phalanx with Periokoi, and eventually used Helots for skirmishes. To compare the social status of Sparta with other cities it's a bit of a challenge given that all male citizens were ruled in all aspects of their life from birth, destined to be a warrior.

    Sadly not. You can see it's tyrian purple which was the most expensive. Purple dye made from red and blue has been used for thousands of years, tyrian purple is made from tens of thousands of snails and has a distinct reddish purple colour and a fishy smell.

    To give some perspective one pound of purple-dyed silk cost you 150,000 Denarii. Gien that 12,000 Denarii would get you one pound of silk, thats 138,000 Denarii for the dye. Thats roughly £345,000.00 today. Although, that figure is probably highly inaccurate as it's hard to find a accurate measure of how much a Denarii was worth.

    @@aurilius8145 Its the declination of "bellum", the latin word for war. It roughly translates to Nominative "the war", Genitive "the war's", Dative "the war", Akkusative "the war", Ablative "the war" ('Ablative is hard to translate, given that there is no equivalent in english) . The second line is the declinition in plural. Note that i have only declinated bellum in the e-declinition (neutrum), because bellum is in latin grammatikally neutral as a word. Lindy declinated it here in all three Genus (or Geni?, dont know the plural), which does not really make sense in a grammatikally way. Basically the pun is that the romans are not declaring war, they are just listing the different case-forms of war, which, in Latin (and Greek) is called declinig.

    LindyBeiege, when I was taking a Firefighter I-II class, we trained in donning and doffing our gear. My instructor had us go from basic school clothing (jeans, t-shirt, underwear, socks and shoes) to full turnout gear (Boots, pants, gloves, coat, hood and helmet.) We were given one minute to don all this gear. Then, in addition to this, we were given an extra 20 seconds to don our mask and SCBA. When I first tried to don my gear, I got 1m 52s.... without mask and SCBA. With practice however, I was able to don everything at somewhere around 1m 4-5s. I think I did better once however I will give the best score to a fellow class who donned in everything with inhuman speed at 47-49s. Now this was albeit done with our gear laid out in front of us. Though after a time, we adapted to putting our gear in specific places, therefore making it easier to don it. I put it to you that many soldiers who must be prepared quickly for battle did this in a similar way and could don there armor much quicker. All that aside, good luck finding your mates and putting the good fight to the Romans.

    Huehuehue Latin uses different forms of the same word to convey meaning within a sentance. Like English has that `s suffix at the end to mark possesion. "Michael`s car" for instance. Latin just has a whole lot more endings each with their own meaning. It`s called "declination" when you list all of these forms.

    Entertaining and informative; good job! I was surprised it only takes a couple of minutes. Also, loved how Lindy's wearing his helmet at 6:51, as if impersonating Pericles (who is always portrayed this way)! Wearing a cloak on top of the armor actually makes a lot of sense when marching, both in hot and in cold weather (although the Greeks wouldn't fight much during the winter, if at all).

    Reminds me a bit of being in the military trying to get into MOPP-4 gear. The standard to get it on is eight minutes but I seem to recall it being MUUUCH shorter than that in practice. It was never enough time, the damn rubber boots never wanted to go over your regular ones and it took forever to make that work.

  • @benchandra7161

    @benchandra7161

    6 жыл бұрын

    They did but by God was it expensive. The dye was made by a certain type of snail if I remember correctly and was traded largely by the phonetians. There's a reason purple is the color of royalty and that's because they were usually the only ones who could afford it. For lindy to be wearing this in real life would either make him a king, a ridiculously wealthy merchant, or a member of one of the aforementioned men's retinue.

  • @elancochavi2595

    @elancochavi2595

    it is true that it was made from a certain type of snail, but i remember watching a video that explains the reason there where no flags at the time with the color purple. the man in the video goes to say that it it because the color was not invented at the time.

    Elan Cochavi yeah I suppose it would come down to what period it was. Armor like that was in use for quite a long time and I wouldn't be suprised if it was invented in that time frame. If lindy is fighting Romans though, I would imagine it would have been invented by then. At this point, Carthage was the last bit of the Phonecian culture so they're well on their way out by now. As for flags, it would be hard to imagine anyone being rich enough to put purple on any sort of national flag due to how many you would have to make. We are only able to do as much due to the invention of synthetic dyes.

    +A survivor Simply being Greek didn't make you are superior fighter, it isn't about spear or shield walls or a cloak not being an easy target, think about it if someone was in a position where the most effective thing they could do was grab your cloak that is what they would do (wearing a cloak isn't going to stop someone from stabbing you) if there is no cloak to grab there is no target therefore nothing they can do . . . pretty simple logic, if something presents a risk (however large or small) you would not willingly use that thing . . . . if you had to fight in an environment (like in very cold temperatures) where wearing a cloak or furs (or both) was stopping you from freezing you might choose to fight in one but when it is not needed you don't use it
