🛠 Anatomy of Speed: 2400hp, twin turbo SBF Radial Cortina | TECHNICALLY SPEAKING
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Sean's TC Cortina is a very special beast. Not only is it a super consistent and competitive radial drag car, it's also one of the first cars in the world to be fully controlled by a Haltech NEXUS R5 VCU.
With the radial, 1/8th mile racing format growing in popularity we figured what a better car to prod and dissect to see how it makes its power and how all that power is then harnessed and released in the most effective way. Our resident tuning guru, expert pointing stick wielder and an all-round nice guy, Scott gets his tuning scalpel out to see what hides beneath that smooth, pink exterior.

I could watch this for days
I love the pointing stick. Reminds me of those Best Motoring videos from back in the day
Your product speaks for it self and its Aussie made 😊 ps go the blue oval 😍😍😍
What a beast, great video guys 👍

Why use CO2 over N2?
@weldmachine
3 жыл бұрын
@@MrBiddo The main positive of using Carbon Dioxide vs Nitrogen that i can think of ? Would be refilling the bottle that,s in the car. Much easier to refill with Carbon Dioxide than with Nitrogen.
I'm never going to have the need for this gear but I'm loving you tech talks Scotty awesome job mate.
This is amazing to watch - thanks so much
"Hope the neighbours aren't going to be too upset with that noise"...personally, it's better than any noises that comes out of my neighbours place lol...great video Scottie!

I just learnt more about drag racing in 20 minutes than I have in 20 years!
I think I have to send my car to Australia they make insane power i think thats where he's at
Fantastic video, great insight..
great work Tuning Fork!!!

Love the Best Motoring style finger pointer
You said “Bump Function”. I laughed my butt off because my wife heard something totally different laying next to me.

Ausome insight to a real beast, appreciate the knowledge sharing! Bit different to sticking a tpiece in back in the day to make something go faster haha
Awesome Vid Scotty, huge thanks for sharing this weapon of a car!....... and how Haltech makes it perform like it does....Frightening ... This car is absolutely no shit .. Absolute animal and built to a standard I as an Aircraft Engineer of 28 years simply froth over. Sean, All the best with this freakin' beast of a car mate... she''s gorgeous in every way....!
Awesome gotta love a 70's tina a rare sight here in the UK 🇬🇧
Scotty is an absolute legend!
Hopefully will get to see it in action at Eastern Creek Drags. When they can race again.
That CO2 Boost control is so damn cool. I've never really been all that interested in drag racing, but seeing the amount of development and technology in this example has certainly got me interested.😳
Scott, drivers actually drive into the chute before braking. The sequence you described actually causes the car to become unsettled in the brake area.
Love this
Beast 👌🏽
Me dad had a cortina his was nothing like this love it
Awesome car to watch, and he still wants faster 😮😮
And there people, is why Tuning Fork is the best Haltech tuner in the world,,, even Adam LZ got Scotty on board when he barra swapped his mustang in the USA,, dude has come along away after his first you tube appearence in MCM years ago
Awesome video today thanks.👍
Ha; the coefficient of friction on the cement didn't allow it to move forward; on a prepped surface it would. So cool.
My brain just imploded!!
wow thank you for show get detail video
As Goose said in Mad Max, Kick er in the guts Barry.
Scott could you please do a tutorial on how to setup the race timer Vs boost/ign/fuel?
Ahhhhhhhh. Remember the days of “3000” HP Top Fuellers with massive superchargers, Nitro Methane and Elephant Hemis....... Now we have Cortinas with 2400 HP.... on Meth....🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️. Technology is an AMAZING thing....👍👍❤️❤️👌👌
This is fascinating. Do you have similar intelligence for other disciplines? For instance active aero triggered by events or conditions for track racing.

We are in the process of getting a feature done on that one too:)
Is it possible to add accelerometers and plot change in tail shaft rpm vs acceleration? Would this method be unnecessary or unreliable?
Did I hear right that the nexus can control boost via turbosmart’s hypegate electronic Wastegate?? Therefore doing away with the co2 bottle and saving weight and complexity??
Alas, a driver that can heat the tyres without reverse gear
Have you got a print file for the pointy hand? I want one!
Scott. Great informative video as usual. Makes me wish I had a car that I could put a Haltech in and play with. A minor point, liquid Meth cooling of the intake charge would be from from the latent heat of evaporation, not pressure drop? Pressure drop makes sense for a gas, but not a liquid. Or have I missed something?

Because the fuel is atomized.
@ThomasDavenport1

exactly what i was thinking wolfgang. he did say phase change though, so that at least makes sense. I wonder how much cooling effect they're getting by letting the methanol flash off?
@wolfgangmika8899
3 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasDavenport1 I did some rough calcs. Obviously depends on mass flow rate of charge air and amount of cooling required. Latent heat of evap of Methanol is about 1155 KJ/Kg. Relatively, the Specific heat of the Methanol can be ignored. Specific heat of air is about 1.0 KJ/Kg.K. It would be totally feasible to inject 20 cc/sec of Methanol to cool the charge air by 40°C, (say, a 5 litre engine at 4000 RPM with a boost pressure of 20 psi). If the methanol is atomised, it will mix well and evaporate quickly. I think my calcs are about right, but I haven't checked them....
Is that a blow off valve downstream of the methanol injectors?
ive got no legs or arms Haltec: we got you bruh

In the old days we use to use a super computer. It took in weather, strip condition, clutch, etc etc. It had a real trick name. It was called your brain. Zero electronics. But the one thing disappointing was at the end. Many a race car and driver has come to harm sitting in a car like that with no seat belt on or stack hat on.im sorry that just plain dangerous to take it to the limiter with out that stuff. Amazing bit of kit for sure though.
Great video Scott. Definitely helps to sell a product if you can demonstrate how it will benefit you. What a shame i,m a Bike guy otherwise i might be knocking on your door. ( now you will reply, to me a tell me we do Bikes as well, LOL )

Why CO2 instead of nitrogen or argon? Is it just because its cheaper or are nitrogen and argon too compressible, giving inconsistent hat pressure?
@geoffreyveale7715
3 жыл бұрын
The CO2 tank stores CO2 in liquid form at around 800psi (20degC). Because of this the storage capacity of a given size of tank is much greater (say over 10 times) than a tank of similar size/pressure storing nitrogen, air or any other gas. The difference in storage capacity allows the racer to do many more runs before needing a refill. This is a related link.. www.onallcylinders.com/2018/02/02/an-introduction-to-air-shifters-pro-tips-for-installing-one/
shouldn't that extra injector be behind the throttle blade because currently if the throttle blade closes and the BOV opens there could be methanol sprayed all over the engine bay.
What's the QTR time, Or did I miss it?

Why CO2 rather than just compressed air?
@haltech

CO2 is a liquid when compressed, so you can fit more in a bottle than compressed air :)

Sorry. I didn't see Robert Paterson's question below.
Why CO2 and not just compressed air ?
@haltech
3 жыл бұрын
When compressed CO2 changes its state to liquid. This allows you to fit considerably more in a bottle than compressed air which, for this purpose can be compressed but will remain a gas and thus take up a lot more room.
@perkins807

Same reason why we use it up in Canada I was working on a drag car with a CO2 system 10 years ago and in a fire when that heats up then pops the burst disk it's a benefit
Why tub that car than run such small tires on it? It sure looks like you could tuck some serious meat under the back of it.
