Sorry guys, I no longer indulge internet "EMP experts" on this thread. There are a lot of people posting stuff that is flat out wrong, and ill informed. I'm not here to stroke any one's ego by debating the subject. I was allowing it, to show exactly what type of people are out there muddying up the discussion. If you want to show everyone how smart you are, go to the EMP Shield forum and argue with them, or start your own channel and do it there. From here on out, I'm just deleting posts that are ill informed, or confrontational. No debate, no argument, no response. Go do it someplace else.

@@GrumpyAcresFarm It's one of those things that feels like it's very low priority to take care of... until it happens and it suddenly becomes the most important problem that you suddenly have to deal with. I just finished building my new place last year. I was building all during the pandemic (which was both a blessing and a curse). There were the supply shortages of everything, and I needed to buy everything way in advance, but it also freed up TONS of time to do the building because no one could go anywhere or do anything for that whole year. Anyhow, just like the trim around the doors, the electrical system still needs finishing and I figured that now would be a good time to get the EMP/CME protection in there as well. I really appreciated your video because, you're right that this is sort of like buying a mattress in that you don't really know (aka, "understand") what's in the thing, and unlike a mattress, you can't even lie down on it to test it out... I mean you could, but laying down on an EMP Shield box won't give you much insight. ;) So I appreciated you sharing this experience of the product actually saving a system from what would have otherwise been a huge pain in the butt! Best luck to you. These are both challenging and interesting times!

I am no expert. So my first answer would be to direct your question to EMP Shield. I am positive they would answer you. If I were to make a supposition, I would say "Yes". My reasoning is that an EMP works through induction, so whether the device is plugged in, unplugged, whatever a non-protected device (no EMP Shield, faraday cage, etc.) is vulnerable. An EMP Shield device is a high speed shunt, so any "excess" energy, no matter where is from would be dropped in to the ground.

People had better be VERY careful about this device. I have one on my breaker box and I have no REAL idea if this thing will work, or not. However, I also attached one to my solar controller and it immediately damaged it. I had to replace the controller at $750. The previous controller was working just fine until I attached that damned EMP Shield. It then discharged my batteries and incorrectly caused the controller to display them as fully charged. The replacement has been working just fine. They wouldn't even call back to see what was causing the trouble. Do NOT put this thing on ANY solar or wind controller as you might experience the same situation and wind up replacing your controller.

Well, they gave me back the missing amount when I told them I would post this experience web wide. Again, DO NOT ATTACH THIS THING TO ANY SOLAR OR WIND CONTROLLER!!!!!!!

I sent that thing back and they tried to charge me a restocking fee for their non functional product. I still have one on my breaker box, but whether it will work, or not, remains to be seen. I have a Midnite Classic 150 which is an excellent MPPT controller. Midnite has a surge protector which I did install on the controller. It works just fine. What I have done is purchase an additional controller and inverter which I'm going to put in a faraday cage. I recommend that you consider doing the same.

@Frank Anast Thank you very much for this swift and detailed response. Just to clarify, according to empshield was it because you received/used the wrong voltage model as Grumpy Acres Farm suggest? I have a Solis RHI 3K 48ES hybrid inverter with included solar controller. First, I was told, I needed the 600 V DC empshield AND the 48 V DC empshield (for the batteries) (besides the 240 V AC euro empshield for the home side, which makes sense). Then, I realised myself, I needed the Dual version of the 600 V DC empshield, as I have two inputs to my inverter (and two strings of solar panels). Now, I question if I even need the 48 V DC empshield after listening to Andrew from empshield in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmmM0tpycqapkso.html 7:45/8.30: "... We tie in the empshield to the very first device in that system. So, normally, it would be a charge controller or an inverter, whatever comes first after the PV array, and we put it there because that huge amount of electricity is been[?] coming in directly through the PV array. It can be anywhere from 12 V, 24 V, but you are not going off of your battery system, you are actually going off of the maximum input voltage from your solar panels, so off grid systems are normally 90 to a hundred and fifty volts. You can go all the way up to 600 volts. ...You'll tie it right in. Now, it doesn't mean, it is only protecting that surge coming from the panel. It will protect everything inside that DC system..." Based on this information, one 600 V DC dual empshield would be sufficient to protect all of my DC side - solar panels, inverter, as well as batteries. Actually, we share the same line of thought. I already have in storage (wrapped in three layers of heavy duty alufoil) another Solis hybrid inverter (the 5K model) as well as a couple of Pylontech batteries (and some spare solar panels, but I understand it is very unlikely those will be damaged during an EMP). Again, thank you for taking the time to reply. I was just beginning to feel comfortable with the empshield as my choice of EMP protection, now I have to reconsider carefully after your experience. The last thing I want, is my well-functioning off grid solar system to receive damage.

In theory they should work and shouldn't work at the same time. This is the very 1st time I even heard about any of this BUT LETS JUST USE LOGIC! These can not hurt and these can not withstand a very big serious emp. An emp is the same thing as an surge but a big emp from something like a nuclear bomb last a lot longer and the environment stays charged for a while. I highly doubt anything will be able to handle a surge that big but this should help with things like power surges lighting strikes small emp attacks or an emp attack that is not directed at you but something close enough to you that you are collateral damage. This is very interesting and something our government should be heavily invested in. People can not live without electricity now let alone 50 years from now. An emp attack could send us into the dark ages because we are way to reliant on electricity

These products took twice the induction of the most powerful weaponized EMP devices known of. It took the load of voltage over 40 times with zero degradation. I'm not quite sure what you mean. If I am understanding correctly, you are asking if they had other systems connected to the devices when they tested them? If that's the case, you'd have to go do a deep dive on the test data to get those specific details. I don't want to steer you wrong by not having 100% recollection. I can tell you that recent stuff they had done do put that to the test. In fact one is side by side testing, one with an EMP Shield and one without. I can't give further details, because I honestly don't have any. EMP Shield has the results and is waiting for the white paper summaries before releasing them to the public. I can tell you they are excited by the results and are chomping at the bit to show people what they have. Sorry I can't give a better answer.

The problem with testing for an EMP, from what I am told, is that there are so many variables that they can not test one in total. They can only test different aspects at any given time, then bring the results together. Doesn't make for very good television. They were supposed to make a video where they zapped a new pick up, never heard what came of that.

You can make an accurate E1 simulation pulse by coupling a spiral line pulse transformer (basically a jelly roll hv capacitor with 4 to 16 extra turns of well insulated foil in the middle) to a fractal antenna like those gimmicy as seen on TV antennas and a small satellite dish to reflect the pulse. When the capacitor discharges it develops hundreds of kilovolts at over 1000A peak at about 120nS then the antenna shreds it to a wide range of frequencies set by the isolation inductor. These are all stacked on top of one another and compressed to about 4nS risetime well into the MV per meter range. Not much survives blasting by this.

Issue I see is that its a whole house device, & probably won't protect devices unless they are close to the EMP shield. What will happen is that during an EMP event all of the wiring will collect energy. When the EMP shield clamps it will create a secondary current loop that allows high voltage current to reach any devices connected. Ideally you need a point of load (PoL) protection such that the EMP surge is clamped and blocks the high voltage from damaging the device. Pol protectors would be connected where your device is connected into the house wiring. The other issue its still possible for devices to get damaged with a Point of load (PoL) surge protector if the surge protect does not clamp all conductors (ie Line, neutral ground or L1,L2,N, G for 240 devices) because its can still leave a path for high voltage to flow.Another issue if devices have an alternative path to ground. For instance, devices connected to water lines which is grounded. Or devices connected to phone lines, Coax, or other low voltage wiring since it can provide an alternative path too. Unfortunately most common surge protectors are single way protection (L-N). An EMP surge protector needs to be three way to address common mode voltage spikes L-N, N-G, & L-G, such that there is no path for the current to get to the device to be protected. If you were to use an EMP Shield at the panel and at each device (PoL), that would be a workable solution.

There are detractors of the product that bash it and refuse to even look at the data or engage the company, so certain they are that it doesn't work. I have no time for people like that in my life whether it's concerning EMP protection, homesteading, or any other subject on which my family's well being hinges on, and neither should any one else. Like I said, go check out the test data, if that doesn't ally your concerns and want to inquire more reach out to them. If they don't respond, let me know here and I will ensure that someone contacts you. I may not be able to address technical questions; I can get customer service issues addressed, though. If that happens, whether the EMP Shield works as advertised or not, there word "sucks" would take on a whole new meaning for all. Have a great one - Grumpy G OK, shameless plug time - Have you priced whole house lightening protection systems or had to file an insurance claim because of a lightening strike? For the price, an EMP Shield device is worth purchasing just for the proven lightening protection it provides alone. The EMP protection is just icing on the cake when it comes to taking care of your family. So, what's to lose? Sorry, I couldn't help myself. ;-)

@@GrumpyAcresFarm I designed my own whole house protection system. I used TVS diodes instead of MOVs because MOVs degrade over time. Day to day, there will be small transients that will slowly degrade MOVs. Every time there is a power outage, odds are there is a surge behind it.Also not sure how MOVs will perform when E2 hits after E1. Possible that E1 takes out the MOVs leaving E2 to cause damage. TVS diodes do not degrade like MOVs but they are considerably more expensive. I did my own low cost testing by discharging High voltage pulses through my protector to ensure it works correctly. I am also installing a lot of Point of Load protectors, and using MC\EMT (Shielded) wiring to help attenuate EMP energy. For CME, I don't think any surge suppressor will work because the CME will induce current for hours and no surge protector can handle it. Fortunately we have 2 to 3 days notices of a CME. I will disconnect every device and place sensitive devices (Radios, electronics) in a faraday cage prior to the arrival of an CME. That said a Grid killing CME is going to collapse civilization, You need to be self reliant for food & energy production. CME will trash all of the grid transformers, include the pole mounted step-down transformers that are connected to homes. There are millions of those transformers & they would all need to be replaced. For a NEMP, well that means WW3, If the US is hit with a NEMP, the US is going to retaliate. Only two nations can launch a NEMP that can take out CONUS: Russia & China, and they aren't going to just launch one Nuke, they are going to go full hog on the nukes. A rogue state like NK does have the means to launch a CONUS sized EMP: need to get at least a 5Mt 330miles over CONUS. 5Mt is about a 10 ton payload on a rocket. FWIW: I spent a lot of time researching this topic, & I am an electrical engineer.

@@guytech7310 Please read this entire comment. For the third time, I am not knowledgeable enough to make detailed comments on the technical aspects of it all. You initially stated, and continue to state that you don't think EMP Shield devices work as advertised. I suggested that you contact EMP Shield directly about the issue...twice. You haven't done so, or plan to do so as far as I can tell. If you were truly interested in having an in-depth discussion about the issue, the proper response both times would have been, "OK, thank you for the suggestion, I'll do that". Then, you would have actually contacted the experts that make the device and had a discussion with them, not some third party. Unless you have the ability to generate a full on EMP, your system has not been fully tested, and you are going completely off supposition. That fact is inarguable. There are only a handful of places in the country that can closely replicate the effects of an EMP generated by a nuclear device, or a CME. None of them are someone's home workshop, as far as I know. There is something off about going around telling people that EMP Shield doesn't work as advertised, then touting your own system. Considering that EMP Shield has been tested by very reputable labs that can replicate the effects, and is going through even more extensive testing and validation as we speak, it all seems very hubristic. I am all for open discussion about EMP Shield. I have faith in the product, the testing that has been done, and the claims as to how it works. With the amount of money we have invested in the endeavor, I better have, or I am a fool. Unless you are willing to contact the people who are the ultimate SMEs on the device you aren't perusing an open, or complete discussion. Discussing technical aspects with an admitted layman or in the echo chamber of a third party who didn't develop the device or have full knowledge of how it works doesn't cut it. I am not here to validate you, or anyone else. Nor, as I said, do I have the patience to sit here and listen to someone who in my opinion is not really interested in having a full discussion about the topic Not just you and not just this topic, but any one on any topic. I've been open and polite thus far. I've given you a platform and a suggested direction to follow to address your concerns. If you aren't going to contact EMP Shield and want to continue pontificating on how you think it doesn't work, please go do so in your own space. Provide a link and I'll post it so people can go to your space and hear what you have to say. You can respond back any way you want. Realize this, it's my house and I have zero problems zotting comments that I feel are mis-informative and/or disruptive. I do not care if this upsets anyone, or not. Have a great day - Grumpy G

@@GrumpyAcresFarm I found the patent, but I still don't really get it. From the looks of it they just patented the idea of using 3 different surge protectors at the same time, rated for voltage surges to expect for E1, E2 & E3. It's just a box full of metal-oxide varistors.

Don't ask me, and don't trust anyone that responds to this thread; good or bad. Go out and look at the data and look at the organizations that have partnered w/ EMP Shield. After that, you should be able to make up your mind on the matter on your own.
