HARD. I'm an older female, doing pretty well with a trashed back. Unfortunately all the sites about bug out bags left me with a 60 lb bag - or more, with a change of clothes, medical, fishing, cooking, water filtration, fire starting, radio, flashlight, batteries, the USB sticks with copies of important papers, knife, axe, saw, paracord, zipties, super glue, emergency tent, blanket, hand warmers, heavy socks, BOOTS hanging off the side, folding solar panel, bottles of water, oat bars, fruit bars, jerky, etc blah blah. I had to go get a small bicycle wagon (and a bike) to lug it if S Hits The F. Now add spare tire tubes, pump, tools --- man, if it hits the fan, I'm in trouble! 🤣 I'm too old for this....

A critical item I have in my protected collection is a good quality volt/ohms meter. It's value after an EMP cannot be over stressed. Also very important is a good quality antenna analyzer if radio protection and distant communications are important factors to you.

You'll need to protect the meter too. Extra protection perhaps for it's utility value for everything else.

I hate this video because it’s true and that scares the hell out of me! Many good people will die for no reason other than greed brewed in Washington! You do great work getting the word out to people and I thank you for that! I know it’s a whole lot of work and personal time.

I have a spare inverter and charge controller in their boxes (tested of course) and wrapped with aluminum foil. Also a volt meter is a great tool to protect.

Thank you for the tips. Best book to read for a glimpse of life following a nationwide EMP event (fiction obviously) that is well written with great EMP resources is One Second After. About 10% of the country survived. With certain areas better than others, 20-50%, based on geographical location, demographics, farming resources, etc. The medically compromised dependent on prescription medications, life sustaining treatments & equipment, chronic illness go first. Along with panic driven suicides & violent conflicts. Community strength, multiple people with multiple skills, is most important. Solo, one family or very small groups don’t have much chance long term.

I put a cordless screw gun driver and drill with a few batteries and a charger in mine. i also put a small laptop and a removeable hard drive with all the ebooks i could find on it. Lastly i bought a spare computer for my car and put in there too.

Don't give personal names or a list of the stuff you have carrying.............. The prepper who is likely to live will be the one with the big gun and willing to steal from everyone that he hears on the radio and otherwise....

Why? Why would that be a better solution? It"s heavier, bulky, inconvinient to move around, you cant put much in it given the size of it. Some say it works. I wouldn't use one.

Nice video, it gets folks in the front door so to speak, on the basics they need. I have gone to what some would call extreme on a Faraday cage. It's by far more than the typical galvanized garbage can, which I happen to think is a great small one. I took a 20' steel cargo container, welded every crevice and corner to create a fully enclosed cage, even laid steel plate on the floors and welded them in, installed two vents, with copper screening on them and the big purchase was the special faraday door, that we welded into one end, inside the regular container doors, it is a four foot faraday door, making sure no entry of any emp pulse into the unit. We plywood lined the entire inside of the steel container, so nothing touches the steel. I thought it was going to be plenty of room, but how wrong I was, we filled it very fast with things just like you talked about. It's funny when you start making a list of how many things you want to have available after a bad emp or war for that matter, as a bad emp, would probably also be a ww3 event. I'm not going to write a book here, but to say, now I am looking at doing a second 20' container or removing the emp door and installing it in a 40' container, not sure yet, the emp door is the expensive part. I am particularly interested in spare parts for my vehicles, the one's that may get burned up in the emp, including motorcycle parts, much more electronics than I previously thought. I have already done the solar power generator stuff, with panels, all in the cage to be on the safe side. It never is enough, is it ? I know some on here say to get into groups of people in a neighborhood, but be careful who knows your preps. When it comes to survival, folks are going to learn the hard way, friends are few to find. You must be able to defend yourself and family. If you are getting like minded people together, then they need to be preparing likewise, so they are not deficient themselves. Hopefully none of this happens, but then why do I feel we are closer to disaster than ever before ?

Glad I could help you out! My favorite is the SAS Survival app. I bought it in 2016. It needed the internet until I called them complaining. They made it work offline. There is a very small book by them called the same thing as well.

If the US is hit by an EMP what makes you think that it would be a one off event? Wouldn't you expect several, spaced out EMP events? Consider not bringing out your protected devices until much longer.

Great video. I've thought about the ham radio but not done anything yet. As I understand, at night the signal bounces off the ionosphere so it's possible to speak to others in the opposite hemisphere. But it's not night there so I'm rather confused. But it's still the best method of communication if the grid is down.

It depends on the band you choose. Different Banda have different characteristics. The lower bands are good for local stuff during the day and may work for longer distance at night. The middle bands will work either day or night. The higher frequency bands will work well during the day but not so great at night

I have created a simple 12 volt solar powered system ...mainly for powering emergency lights + telephones.... - I would just love to figure out how to protect it all and have it running... - is there no such stuff as electrically conductive glass for solar panels? ...maybe the only solution is to have a stock of all components as spares; - I have a steel filing cabinet... might work on that!

I never thought about a solar charge controller and I have an extra from when I went to a bigger one on the RV

Most important would be an old vehicle with points ignition and a simple carburetor. A full tank of gas and a couple gerry cans will get you wherever you want to go and carry what you need.

Great video two thumbs up👍👍. I got myself three power inverters.300W,2000W,5000W.Depending on the power consumption. I use 2000W is good for most small things like a SawSaw for pruning trees. A Skill saw, requires too much amperage. Something to ponder on anything more than 2000W probably requires too much amperes on your alternator.

Make cage with a wooden frame and coat it with screen, ideally copper window screen but even chicken wire will usually work. I found an AM FM shortwave radio that includes a SUN charging strip, a recharging crank, and two kinds of batteries. Dry and wet rechargeables. It has a flashlight on it but it will not float

Using screen can be hit-or-miss. Everything depends on what trons we are being hit with. AM reception is easily cut off while FM isn’t affected.

@@seniorchief48 if youre Faraday sreen totally encloses the FM receiver, and the FM, AM, and shortwave and other transmissions should be blocked. The RF transmissions from any source, like police radios etcetera., inside an adequately constructed Faraday cage are blocked and cannot be received. FM radio is carried by RF transmission and thus will be blocked also. Inadequate blocking can be caused by a break in the wire mesh surroundings or the density of the wire mesh may not be enough to block all radio signals. Chicken wire may not be dense enough and coverage must include the bottom also.

That is quite an emergency package that I describe. However I bought a chargeable crank style device with puts out enough energy to recharge a telephone or a power bank BUT the version I bought for very little money requires a GREAT amount of cranking.

Great tips in this video. Many newer type batteries (Lifopo4) have a BMS fitted. These will be affected by an EMP so you need to protect them too. AGM-type batteries should be OK.

I have both, a Lifpo4 and Lead Crystal battery banks. I really like the Lead Crystal batteries. Almost idiot proof. I switch battery banks monthly.

Things I would put in a Faraday Cage; 1. H2 Portapack for Hacker RF one for coms and rf detection. 2. Voltmeter with continuity, ohm, capacitance, and amp capabilities. 3. Night vision with rechargeable battery packs. 4. Radiation monitor for general and point detection (GM tube type). 5. Baofeng radio sets. 6. Thermal vision 7. Buck / boost adjustable voltage converters

This is great information, personally I am more concerned about CME coronal mass ejection from the Sun ( solar flare ) there was one in March and had it been earth facing we would be in your EMP situation right now. All your suggestions are accurate for this event as well Great video- Thanks

I have incandescent torches and 12v globes as backup in case of led failure. But I far rather the leds if I can for less energy consumption though. Also I was thinking of the electronic circuits in my Deep cycle lithium batteries. So I have deep cycle lead acid batteries as backup.

Hi, greetings from England, all l good information and items, I added a butane fuelled Iroda soldering iron kit and cheap arduino/pi components pack to my "scavenger" tool roll in my escape pack as I figure I will find stuff discarded by others that I can repair and use. I wouldn't want to carry a 22lb bluetti eb70 for more than half a mile on top of my 45-55lb escape pack and I'm only 42 but medically retired.

Downloading everything from entertainment to survival material on old phones is a great idea!

I love this idea and concept but in reality, the items we are using daily are the ones we want to protect so how will they be inside a cage if we're using them during the EMP strike? And not everyone can afford two items of each to simply store one away in a cage for an indefinite time frame. I was barely able to finally afford a small 500 watt power generator in the last year and use it from time to time. I guess I could store it in a cage when it's not being used daily, but most preppers have theirs out in videos and using them often as most of them are already living off grid.

If there is an emp attack, your electronics will be the last thing to worry about. Do you have food storage, water storage, a way to defend yourself? Do you have skills that will help and a bug out bag just in case and a plan? Back to your point... Just put a few items that cost less but are similar in a cage once you have dealt with the other preps first. Also remember, 2 is 1 and 1 is none, even if they are less expensive. When finished using item, put it back.

Also.... if there's an empty attack.....I would think that is better to wait 48hrs before using your stuff from the Faraday cage. Most likely there will be numerous emp attacks.

Funny… a few weeks been I placed a SW radio & a baofeng radio into a faraday bag

I have a few Baofeng radio's for comms. Batteries will lose charge quickly due to the negative ground being connected. I have 12 volt chargers pigtailed into my old tractor. I also have a generator that runs off the PTO on the tractor. Put up enough fuel and filters for at least a year.

What kind of tractor do you have? I had a Kubota, when I lived in the mountains. I used the pto for several things but not a generator... interesting.

Keep in mind that radios, internet, GPS devices, even your local memory cards are likely to be impacted by an EMP or a well placed Coronal Mass Ejection. You need how-to books and notes of key information from your devices as a backup.

Could you make a list of the EXACT apps that you have chosen to put on your old phones? That information is beyond any value! Thank you for considering this, probably labours, task!

67 here, thanks for your video, good info. Have most of what you describe here , planning to bug in rather than out. been prepping for many years, live way out in the deer woods. Collecting rain water in 250 gal tanks for animals, garden/ greenhouse, and filtration (last case, potable). one thing to remember, all this "stuff" will, over time, turn into dust. Need to learn to live like it is 1600 AD

I put walkie talkies, NOAA hand crank radio, Potassium iodine and a laser ranger finder in the faraday cages I gave my family and friends. Other items to stash away would be Night Vision Goggles (NVG), travel solar panels, and Garmin handheld GPS.

Using the old phones for storage materials a great idea especially since they've started using the way back machine or system to go back and delete or rewrite material this way you could make a permanent archive for when more knowledge disappears from the internet

Not sure what this has to do with storing a phone with offline survival apps.

not sure if this is covered but one thing to consider none the less. Most residential/commercial solar panels on homes require power to produce power. Unless the controller, or breaker box, is wired to do so the controller will require a little bit of power from the grid to begin producing power. This is to prevent the panels to send power to a downed grid and causing further damage to a damaged grid. Such as crews coming across what they think is a dead wire when it is actually live; a panel to send power to a damaged system overloading or heating it up; or a damaged home catching it on fire due to a live wire caused by several solar panels. This can be fixed with a home battery backup as well as disconnecting from the main grid. homesteads that aren't connected to a grid don't have this issue though. It's relatively easy to fix it, but you just got to know what you're doing so you don't destroy you gear or burn the house and the entire neighborhood down.

You are right. You do need to know what you are doing. I already said in my video that I have a charge controller in my faraday cage and I showed it and listed it under the description. All I need is wire and a battery, which I also talked about, to work with the solar panels. I also have several videos on my channel about solar power.

Good idea!

The solar panel on most radios won't charge the batery. It will keep a fully-charged battery charged, and it will probably poer the radio for listening, in bright sunlight.

Great question! I am in the middle of doing my bugout bag contents video. I will be talking about it there. Basically, I would not add a few of these things unless it was a major shtf situation and even then, I would remove a thing or 2 from my pack. I like my bugout bag about 18 pounds including the pack.

Cb radios for those in a more populated area may be helpful, make sure it's a good one that reaches out.

My view on HF (so-called High Frequency) radios: they generally run on (nominal) 12 volts...no inverter necessary. This goes for any 'mobile' versions (using any Amateur frequencies) in a vehicle, and desktop units...usually more powerful and with more features. The desktop ones often have handles to make them portable, though not light. Amateur (ham) Radio has always had a major connection to emergency usage. Still to this day ham radio is the go-to communication form in serious emergencies. They need at least a long wire for an antenna; and of course, a better antenna equals better (clearer, farther) communication. Another very important factor is a strong preference for being licensed. That is mandatory in normal, legal use on any Amateur frequencies but is not necessary in a dire emergency. It IS important though in extreme situations, because untrained people will make communication, official and otherwise, a giant mess, and will seriously hamper lifesaving communication being attempted by emergency responders, etc. Best practice is: know what you are doing or just listen.

Do you think an everyday kettle would work after an emp? (Using a faraday stored inverter/battery) naturally there’s fire/camping stoves but nice to maintain brewing cups tea when SHTF (without waiting hours to heat the water using/prepping valuable firewood etc… )

I don't know what the parts are in an electric kettle. However, if there are any semiconductors or chips in it, it may not work after an emp. I would just leave it unplugged in your kitchen and use the valuable space in your faraday cage for more important things. After a SHTF EMP, you will likely have lot more to worry about than making tea anyway. That being said, my gut feeling is it will probably still work. I would leave it unplugged, though.

Question is a steel tool box good for a Emp as long as you put aluminum foil around the inside of the Doors and Drawers? I would love to know so I can start putting what I can use and set them up.

First off, I never said it was better. Second, "better" than what and for what situation? Short wave is not "better" for prepping if comparing it to ham or amateur radio, in my opinion. It can be helpful in certain situations.

I think it would be very beneficial for people to download the instructions on how to turn a Baofeng radio into a repeater. I have started to replace my batteries for my radio with those that can be charged through a USB cable by using the solar power bank. Also, make sure the solar power bank is a pass-through solar charger. Power banks that support pass-through charging are useful because they let you charge both the power bank and the connected device simultaneously, which is a feature that not all power banks have. This can possibly allow you to set up a repeater with a couple of solar banks and not have to worry about go back everyday.

@@DBs58 I currently own about 8 Baofang radios in different forms. I started with the UV-5R but have since moved to the S9 Plus because it is waterproof. In a SHTF event I plan on using them outside in all environments. I has done a few videos on radios over the past year that shows my comms setup for me to carry around and what I use in my vehicles. I do overlanding as well, so radios come in handy. There are a lot better radios out there, but if you are on a budget, these will work just fine.

I'm curious if I can make my aluminum metal rv into a faraday cage somehow. It's one of the Lakota colt horse trailers with living quarters/2 stalls. I have it in case of needing to move quickly due to fire or some other world issue(war, lol). Anyway, horse stall area in it is for storage. Any ways to turn this metal rv into a faraday cage to store everything in case of EMP issues? Would love to see a video on how to do it and what materials are needed.

It would have to be completely surrounded and sealed in metal and every crack sealed with metal or aluminum tape, I would think... but who knows...

So will solar panels themselves be ok unprotected from an EMP? I have several portable / foldable 300w and 200w solar panels. But way to big to fit in a faraday bag.

For EMP faraday testing I thought all was well until i used a Baofeng radio to test and could ping it for about 10 feet away unless it was also wrapped in 2-4 layers of faraday cloth. This included faraday bag purchased for them. My faraday cages are aluminum cans lined in cardboard sealed with al tape at all points and extra aluminum lining on top. Is this level of protection required to block EMP ? Simple am/fm radio signal and cell service was blocked without the cloth but not the Baofeng or other walkie talkie

@@LoneStarPrepping yes I had tested with radio and cellphone (limited since only had one and had to wait for a call). EMP bag inside worked without extra layers. What would the Radio frequency be at 30 ft (per vendor) for shielding vs your simple cages? I know this might be overkill but I live too close to DC to take z chance

@@Vandrock There wont be "none"!. Its metal on metal. Any contact between the lid and can at all will show some continuity. Like I have said over and over.... USE AN AM RADIO with a strong signal. If it goes away, you should have at least 50dB shielding. I communicated with Dr. Aurthur Bradly about this and he said the AM radio is fine. You can use a scanner as well. If you want additional protection, use his faraday bag or foil.

If its not plugged into anything, it likely will be fine.

my best guess is that invertor may be protected, but the car you're attaching it to likely won't start after a major emp event

True, it will likely be protected. Thats why I said that in my video. Not sure why you think you need the car to run for the inverter to work. Please explain.

The inverters without battery cables attached are pretty resiliant to EMP. The charge controller is overly sensitive to EMP, as is the phone. Fully charge the battery and wrap it in paper towel then wrap it in foil before putting it in the faraday cage. All radios are VERY sensitive to EMP. You should remove the batteries and antennas prior to putting in your Faraday cage. LED flashlights are a mixed bag. The metal cased type with simple off and on can take it. The plastic cased type or those with variable brightness will be damaged. From my testing the variable brightness ones stay stuck on maximum. The LED itself seemed unaffected. Plastic cased ones were totally fried.❤

How do you know exactly how any of these things will be effected by an emp? In reality, its all an educated guess, at least on my part. You said "from your testing"? What testing? How did you test?

I believe most batteries should work. Some batteries that have electronic circuitry built in may be damaged. If solar panels are not hooked up, I think they should be fine. If they are hooked up, I think it will be hit and miss.

Can I make a suggestion? Video card links to other videos should be duplicated in the description. Some people use 3rd party viewers that don't show the cards. Others may want to find the link in the future without rewatching the whole video. Thanks - great content btw!!

Great video and I have many of these items in my homemade metal trashcan faraday cage but great point that you may need to be mobile! I've been prepping with the plan to put all my cardboard boxed and aluminum foil wrapped content into the back of the truck and haul a** to the woods BUT there is a good chance the car won't start after an EMP, SO I'm probably going to stay put until things calm WAY DOWN and I can find an old El Camino I can drive out to the country, carburetor baby 🙂

I'd also add USB Plug In 50/100/200 LED DIY Micro Copper Wire String Lights (they'd take up next to no space), they'll give you low power area light that you can easily run from your rechargeable power banks, and get over 3 days of continuous use out of a 20,000 mAh power bank much longer if you only use as needed.

I'm thinking anything to connect with Starlink would be more helpful 🤔 and power sources of course.

I heard there is also an app that lets your phone work like a ham radio. I have not tried it. There is a really good scanner app for you phone as well, and I do use that.

I've got one of those metal cans but I'm wondering if I could just spray flex seal all over the inside instead of using a bucket liner? I've also got a large trunk and I'm wondering if I can just line the inside with aluminum foil and then spray more flex seal inside that? What would happen if I sprayed the inside of the trunk first and then put the aluminum foil into it? Does it matter which side is exposed to the emp? What about just using an old microwave?

All you are doing is trying to keep metal items from touching the can. Flex seal would do fine if you dont mind the smell or mess. I almost used it back in 2015 but the plastic bucket is faster, easier, and no mess. Flex Seal was the reason I thought of the plastic inner bucket. Use whatever you want. Some people use cardboard. Again, my way is easier. You can try aluminum in trunk. It may tear and likely not seal well and make one big smelly mess. Just test it. Some people say they use microwaves. The two I tested didnt work. Its a bad idea anyway. You get little room to put things in for the amount of room it takes to store. To me it looks silly and it is not as easy to move around because of the weight. These are all ideas that have been tossed around for years. Thats why I use the setup I do... its better idea. Why are you trying so hard to avoid what I suggested lol? Is it the price of the plastic bucket? Its the same price as 1 can of Flex Seal.

@@LoneStarPrepping LOL You crack me up bro. It's not what you suggested that I'm trying to avoid. I just don't like spending money on things that I don't need. But I didn't even realize that the bucket was to keep items from touching the metal can! So really it's understanding that I'm trying to get. It's very interesting to me that a microwave might not work. I put a cell phone in a microwave and called it from a landline and the reception came through and it rung which was baffling to me how that worked. I thought microwaves were supposed to block all microwave radiation and that's what cell phones use right? Again I'm just trying to work with what I've got and hold microwaves for free on Craigslist just make more sense to me and spending money building something that I don't already have. But again mostly it's about understanding how these things work... That's where I'm at.

Some microwaves work, but dont test it with a phone. Test it with a strong AM radio signal. If the signal goes away, it should be providing about 50db, which is enough shielding. Since you said you had one of those metal cans and it sounds like you were ready to use flex seal, just spend the $14 for a plastic bucket or use cardboard or use nothing and just dont let items that are metal touch the can... I didnt need to because the lid sealed tight enough. Whatever you use, like file cabinet, there can be no gaps, at all! It must be sealed with metal or aluminum.
