We EMP Solar Panels, iPhone, PC, & more!

Ғылым және технология

We tested a few inverters, solar panels, and the Sol-Ark EMP hardened solar generator against radiated and conducted EMPs. We also test what an EMP does to an iPhone and a laptop, the results are surprising!
We are now known as Sol-Ark

FYI, our solar panel testing results matched 2 other labs (including military tests). Properly protected solar inverters also survive but almost no chance for standard ones.

Very small EMPs can likely survive all of your testing. Very large EMPs will likely *not* survive any of your testing, EMP-hardened or otherwise.

    I think the most important thing is to protect fhe power grid in the house. Basic light, heat/ac, water pumps, fridgerators/stoves sums up whats ACTUALLY important. All other electronics you can live without. In the 90s we lives without cell phones and computers. But we still did have phones to call.

    We called them chokes at the phone company. We put them on lots of equipment to counter surges like EMPs. Basically a magnetite toroid around the conductors to intercept the magnetic field pulse that comes with an EMP.

  • @germanjohn5626

    @germanjohn5626

    Ferrites are really useless for EMP since they will saturate in a flash and become invisible to the field. It is not the magnetic component you have to worry about but the large E1 voltage and low DC to 500Khz voltage that will go right past a ferrite and destroy the equipment. It will blow out all protection diodes inside the equipment and the 50-100k reverse voltage will destroy the panels. I have been working with cellular and broadcast all my life and see what direct lightning hits can do no matter what we do to protect it. A direct hit is only a small potato in spectrum compared to an EMP produced by a nuke specifically designed for max EMP effect. I would not waste my money on this.

    emp basically overwhelms electrical systems with a spread of radio frequency energy- which builds up within your circuits. it is now possible to buy off the shelf systems, to absorb those signals... and store them as energy, then discharge them safely as voltage. obviously- they've equipped their systems with something similar.

    Yes and no. Solar Flares/CME and the EMP E3 pulse are very similar. The protection required for them is quite different from the E1 & E2 pulse. E3/CME requires 10's of miles of wire to couple into. So if you are Off Grid, there is no concern for CME. Sol-Ark 8K provides protection for E1/E2/E3/CME with 6 different technologies.

    Panels are pretty resilliant to EMP. The cells generally will see the pulse as capacitors with the main worry being a common mode pulse from them heading right into your regulator box. The gizmo you are using for radiated EMP is similar to the E3 component, while the pulse generator is either an E1 or E2 simulation. 🤓

    I'm concerned that this demonstration doesn't trully represent the danger to microelectronics from high gigahertz frequency that you might see in a major solar flare or Weaponised EMP. Also Do you think my solar panels are safer directly connected to my LeadAcid battery banks as I much prefer to use them, than with the crap think they are smart charge controllers that throw away 60 to 95% of the power they are capable of supplying, and kill my batteries by refusing to supply the currents and voltages they need to not dendrite and cell balance? I'm assuming that the batteries inertia will stop short duration high voltage and currents and the diode nature of the cells prevent back current. Am I wrong about these matters? It seems pretty obvious that electronic systems are not safe from the inverter failures in the video. And that grid tied systems are absolutely stupid.

  • @glasslinger

    @glasslinger

    @@aaronfranklin324 EMP will be nanoseconds to microseconds in duration. The average energy is minuscule thus damage will be drastically dependent on exactly how the pulse gets to the components. Long pieces of wire will act as inductances which will integrate the pulse thus reducing its amplitude, finally to where common surge protectors will dissipate them. This is why huge power transformers are for all practical purposes immune. A lot of hysteria over EMP is simply people not understanding basic electronics!

    @@glasslinger Get ya. But the Gamma and X-ray bursts from Major solar superflares, and the radiation belt proton discharges down Magnetic flux pipes to ground that accompany them, of megawatts per square meter over many square kilometres. Those are NOT such short term events. Examples: Tunguska, Green desert glasses, vitrified megaliths. Mojan Dharo, Harappa, high energy particle tracks and U238 transmitted to Pu239 at exposed Granite surfaces at 12900, 26000, and 39000 year geological horizons across East of the Rockies north America, And Western Europe, when previous Magnetic Excursions offset the Earths dipole field Away from the Atlantic, and weakened, as it is now. Those Red picket fence midlattitude Auroras you guys have been enjoying watching are the first warning sign that it's imminent. And Nuclear weapon EMPs as opposed to high explosive ones, they have the short wavelength gamma photon energies that WILL fry electronics.

    That's not what the experts are saying. According to a research paper from 2017 (can't post link b/c of yt spam filter) a solar storm of a similar magnitude to the infamous Carrington event could cause up to 66% of the US to lose power. There's much debate about how long it would take to get power back up and running, with estimates running from days to months, depending on how much of the transmission network needed to be replaced. If an outage on that scale lasted more than a week or two, things would get really bad as people ran out of food, water, gas, etc. And the economic damage would be in the trillions.

    @@arconreef You are absolutely correct about this. I read a 2021, 350 page PhD dissertation by an electrical engineer here in New Zealand about the effects on our grid of the two biggest glare events in the last twenty years a couple of weeks ago. Effectively, they caused DC currents in high voltage AC power transmission lines and substation node transformers of similar Amperage to their maximum design capacities. Only about a dozen of hundreds across the US going down will bring the whole lot down Inna cascade. And repair and restarting would take months to years, if it ever could be achieved, with the reliance on grid electric and electronic systems for communication, transportation, and manufacturing and on site repair in the world today, that would also be inoperable. And remember that most parts you'd need to do it are made in China, and they would be putting their own predicament ahead of yours. All I can say, is practice making what you NEED yourself. Get a marine VHF radio for communications, A solar panel, and some twelve volt DC led downlights. A few cigarette lighter USB chargers. Automotive lead acid batteries are quite adequate. If you can get old maintainable ones with top up plugs even better. They will last 25 years, are much more durable than modern batteries, and you can check the charge levels without electronic voltmeters, using a cheap hydrometer. High voltage grid AC stuff is very fragile because it's designed for low current, and is far more likely to produce it. Remember, a Carrington level event is no longer necessary. Our Earths magnetic shield strength is less than half what it was then, and with it offset away from the American and Atlantic sector, your gates wide open. Don't expect Satellite services to survive either. The miniturisation of electronic chip components has made them far more vulnerable than even a decade ago. They will be hit by very large high energy proton, ion and electron fluxes. And very high drag from a puffed y Atmosphere, as Elon found out when he lost all those starlinks in a very minor event. Those midlattitude Aurora's you've been enjoying were only a mild m class event. An X10 would likely have simiy effects today as the ~X30 Carrington and put those Auroras as far south as Florida and Cuba, like it did. And induce far more rocky geomagnetic conditions. And they were far better equipped with the technology then to handle it, than the devolved, disposable, cheap rubbish systems of today.

    So, if a computer, phone and such are not plugged into a charger at the time of EMP blast, they are good. I would think the same for the charging cords if they are not plugged into a power source at the same time. Sound correct? Now, for the real reason I am here. What about a solar powered watch? Does any of this depend on how close the item is to the actual blast site? This has been a big debate, believe it or not. So far, the answers I have found are conflicting. Thanks.

    A few things I noticed. 1) the inverters, when tested were in different places. 2) When the solar panels were tested, your brand had cardboard covering the connectors, the other on didn’t. 3) when you tried to reset the inverter, you just pushed the switch off and on, but your brand, you waiting a bit longer to turn back on, possibly giving it more time to reset.

    Please give us some slack. There is no deception here from 2 years ago. We did this for educational purposes and we own 3 EMP generators. In fact we try to dispel some of the fear mongering myths that everything dies from the radiated pulse (the conducted E1/2/3 pulses do most of the damage). And if you have any doubts, the Sol-Ark 8K was 3rd party tested to 100KV/m >140 times. Electronics, solar panels and appliances all survived. Test results www.sol-ark.com/emp-hardened-sol-ark/.

    It's really pretty simple, the cheap inverters have no circuit protection so any spike is going to pop them. You don't really need to test it to know it's gonna go if you put 1kv through it. Secondly, protecting a circuit is not rocket science, all military gear is EMP protected, so it's hardly a stretch to believe that an inverter designed to withstand the pulse does. I have no connection to this company but I am over joyed to see this vid up dispelling some of the nonsence put out by late night TV shows that care only about ratings and not about truth, and my hat is off to them for addressing the need for small home solar equipment that is properly engineered and protected as most preppers don't have the skills needed to do this themselves. And it's far better anyway that the protection circuits be built right into the product then to kluge together something after the fact.

    We did test a Magnum inverter and it failed. I disagree that high end inverters will survive. They are not designed to handle an E1 pulse in every input/ouput. And they will not survive the 300s E3 energy. They are only often protected for E2/lightning.
