And spoilers, Marcy soon realizes it is an illusion when the hologram version of her friends (cosplaying as Link and that Fire Emblem girl) asked what she likes. Marcy then said she realized this because the real Anne and Sasha are not into her interests. But even then she rather embrace the real world than rather be stuck in her illusion.

This is really true, I'm an artist been drawing for 8-9 years but I'm afraid of drawing characters of color. I used to but people on twitter would always try to "cancel me" for "whitening" characters when all I did was change the tone of the skin colour to match a color palette (meaning the shade is still exactly the same as the original). :/ Theyd probably try to cancel me for saying this too but I don't see any enjoyment drawing people of colour only to have to delete the art post because people on twitter are trying to find out where I live or who I am. (Sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense eng isn't my main language, just very frustrated)

Since you asked for context on the actual image, here's what the art is about (AMPHIBIA S3 SPOILERS) Basically Marcy (the girl on the right) had gotten her and her friends, including Anne (the girl on the left) stranded in Amphibia on purpose (kinda), basically her parents were going to make her move away and she wanted to keep adventuring and making new memories with them, and happened to find the calamity box around the same time. Fast forward much later, Marcy is taken over and used as a host for this thing called the "Core", which is a mix of all the greatest minds in Amphibia, and her mind is locked within it. In order to convince her mind to join the core, it tried to trick her into thinking she was starting a new adventure with her friends. This is a fanart of that fake "adventure" with Anne, an illusion. It's also why Marcy is in a different outfit and Anne is dressed like Botw Link. The outfits are pulled from Marcy's own imagination essentially. It's not an Owl House crossover or anything, though I haven't watched owl house so I can't say for sure if Marcy's outfit is a reference to it, I dunno. But yeah that's the context behind the art. The environment in this fanart is also an illusionary VERY BRIGHT DAY on an illusionary open field, so naturally skin tones would be a bit brighter in this environment than what they'd realistically be in a swamp world or indoors. Not to mention skin tones in artworks are subject to color theory and color styles. Someone could make an artwork "more accurate" but at the cost of the colors not matching well and the art not looking as good. Whoever thinks an Asian artist is genuinely white-washing other Asian characters should lend me whatever they're smoking

Context behind the art: The reason the characters (Anne, the more dark skinned one and Marcy, the more light skinned one) look so light in the art is possibly because in that scene, the two of them were in an imaginary world that was made up for Marcy, a place that was very sunny and light, and you can see the light reflecting off of them in a similar way in the show. It's just the lighting and yet people are getting mad over it. Bonus: I kinda found it funny how that scene wasn't an owl house crossover, but a reference to the Zelda games. It's an understandable mix up, I haven't played the Zelda games either and didn't get the reference myself, but I just found that funny.

One time I retweeted a drawing of a Japanese artist and immediately, I got notifications from some of my followers who complained about the light skin tone and proceeded to contact the artist to change it. The artist was chilled enough to simply update the drawing (but still leaving the original up). Also, the funny thing is, the original pic only has comments from Japanese viewers while the “updated” pic is just flooded with English comments that keep going about them being victorious and so on. I just wanted to share good art and (partly) brought problem to the artist.😔

For context, the two characters are Marcy Wu (Right with the green braid) and Anne Boonchoy (Left). The context is that while trapped in an illusion world while her body is being possessed by the Big Bad (It's fucking creepy and I love it), Marcy is in a dream where reality is the best it can be for her. Her best friends, Anne here and another friend named Sasha, appear in the clothes as Link from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild and Sasha (Not pictured here) is dressed as Edelgard from Fire Emblem Three Houses (Which I adore the shoutouts). Anne is Thai-American and Marcy is Chinese American, hence the the outcry about the skin color which I assume is more so against Anne here. Trust me, if they made Marcy's skin darker, this would have gotten the opposite reaction from the mob. Also Amphibia reel gewd, it just ended, I actually recommend.

It’s fanart of a scene in Amphibia’s All In, where Marcy (black hair) is trapped in a illusion where she has the fantasy world of her dreams. Anne (brown hair) and Sasha (a character that’s not in this fanart) are also Illusion versions that always agree with Marcy. She realizes that this reality isn’t real because her friends should be able to make their own decisions, and not only want what she wants.

In "All In", Amphibia's penultimate episode, we get to see Marcy in the Core, a biomechanical hivemind of Amphibia's previous rulers and greatest minds, preserved for all eternity. It has taken control of Marcy's body. In the core, Amphibia's previous king, Aldrich, gives marcy a fantasy in the Core, and makes fake versions of Anne and Sasha. Aldrich then gives the fake Anne, Faje Sasha, and real Marcy fantasy outfits, and the drawing is Anne in the outfit her fake Core version was in and Marcy and her fantasy outfit. Not an owl house x Amphibia crossover art.

This is just a rant, don’t feel obligated to read lol. As an artist myself, I hate how people say we’re whitewashing or black facing or whatever it is when our drawings look too white or too dark. I’ve had cases where I pull skin tones directly from artbreeder references I made for my OCs and the colors don’t line up or look right because the background is a different color (or doesn’t fit with the palette) and my other colors aren’t added in yet. I have a pride month thing going on for my social medias and I’m trying to include different ethnic groups and represent everyone via my characters, so I’ve gotten to experiment with different tones. It’s hard. It’s very, very hard. Back to the topic: By the looks of it, that artist had some highlights on their faces as well. Not only did they have the correct skin tones, but they took it a step further and made/used a palette. That is amazing all by itself. Putting together the right palette to make realistic (or semi-realistic) skin tones and colors is difficult. It’s not whitewashing because it came directly from the characters, but some people are just dicks and don’t understand how highlights and shadows work in art sometimes. And yes, comparing them to the actual characters is great - you can prove you used their skin tones. But if someone doesn’t see the base tone from the media right off the bat and exactly where they wanna see it, they get upset. I just feel bad for all the artists who are harassed over their art, actually good and true art (as in it’s not drawn to be toxic towards people), because they work hard and do their very best and people just hate it to hate it. Anyways that’s my rant. Have a great day!

AMPHIBIA FINALE SPOILERS, “ALL IN” (It’s part one) So you said you wanted to know what’s happening. Well in All In, while Marcy is trapped in the Core, the Core gives her a fantasy adventure of her own dreams, including her friends. But those aren’t really Marcy’s friends. They’re just an illusion. Fake. The fake version of her friends, tell her that they want to do anything she wants to do. Hearing that, Marcy snaps out of the illusion because she knows that Anne and Sasha don’t want or like what she does. I assume that the post is probably about shipping Marcy and Anne. In the post it shows that Anne likes/has a crush on Marcy and Marcy feels the same. But that’s not what happened in the episode. It’s just shipping. The creator of Amphibia, Matt Braly, said he didn’t want a relationship between the girls because it would drive fans CRAZY. The second paragraph is just what I think. It could just be a normal post.
