    Oh wow someone is still watching this video. I’m glad you found it. What a special game this is though it does take a bit to wrap your mind around how it plays. I hope if you do get it out, you enjoy your play. And if not-you can always sell this game! There seems to be a perpetual market for it.

    As a kid I bought this and Up Front on the very same day. They were the first 'new' board games that I ever bought and honestly, I do not think that I ever found anything like either one of them again. I still remember the feeling that I had when I realized that all the money that I had saved was now gone .... but what a journey those games took me on. Money well spent. As always, great video. Thank You for taking the time to make it. It really brought back some memories. BTW, I was surprised that I still remember one of the Ambush maps you showed so well. Especially that tree line at 10:40.

    Harvestersz Wow what a gold mine purchase! I’m not surprised you still remember that tree line. Emotional responses to art are quite powerful. After that kind of introduction I would also imagine it would be hard to live up to the experience time and again. Thanks for sharing that story. My first purchases in the hobby (Invasion of the Air-Eaters and James Bond Assault!) were nowhere near as classic games but still stick with me decades later.

    Thanks for the comment. Like you, I absolutely adore this game though unlike you I only own one expansion. I'm always on the lookout for used copies though as you know they are pricey. I've never played Battle Hymn but have had my eye on that too for a purchase down the road. Such an innovative, beautiful design. I only wish a game company now would see the potential in this sort of game and make new ones.

    Even if you complete a scenario and know enemy locations you can always try different tactics. The outcome will always be unique because of the dice element. This is one the most thematic games I have played, it's so much more than a game, it's an experience. It's like playing Band of Brothers the board game. You get really attached to your squad and attempt to leave no man behind. Despite the steep learning and fiddly rules, it's worth it. You will have a cinematic experience with this.

    I've read through the rules SEVERAL times and WANT SO BADLY to just envelope myself in Ambush, but there's just SO many rules to remember in terms of grenade fragmentation and bouncing, throwing into a building, penetration rules, who is visible and who is obstructed, etc., etc. Maybe I'll come back to it one day in the future (for the third time).

  • @GeekGamers01

    @GeekGamers01

    Yes I totally understand that problem! There are so many details on some aspects of the game that it almost runs counter to the immersion you just want to be able to feel. Unfortunately (for me at least) that didn't happen right away and it's almost like you have to give up on the first scenario and just use it as a learning experience, realizing that you're going to be playing through with tons of look ups and pauses that do remove you from the narrative. For this game (as with so many) it is also easier to get into if you just accept that you may be getting some things wrong the first time(s) around.

    1:30 ACK! Use nail clippers to remove your counters from their tree. Your counters will not hook on each other so much. I put my maps under glass too. But I sandwich my maps between pieces of glass. It helps to put counters (destroyed building, vehicle ets, under the glass but keep in mind to place equal size (quarters/coins on the parameter so the counter(s) are not completely taking the weight of the glass and gently abrasing them (over a very, very, long time. I am the first owner of all my games, and they have lasted two decades minimum without abrasing under glass.) I enjoyed "Ambush" that I bought, "MOVE OUT, SILVER STAR, PURPLE HEART, BATTLE HYMN, LEATHER NECK & SHELL SHOCK (Two Player game). 5:50 Imagination Activation, Day-ta: When you replay the game, use the "Scatter Diagram A" or "B" to activate the soldier in a comparable hex. Plus, use a different card and run that German on your terms. It's amazing how fun this first mission is when a player does this. I got bored with all the researching one has to do with this game. It seems the computer (the sleeve and cards) wants to really take a lot of time. I also didn't like some of the really stupid decisions the Germans were making: "If the GE has a grenade, crouch and throw it, If not, use your free stance to stand and snap-fire" while in an open hex with no cover... yeah, right. I just opened the paragraph books, copied the paragraph numbers pertaining to equipment, placed them on a Random Encounter List, made up an "Equipment List" (using the counters as a guide) with ALL the paragraph books. I only put the Book name and paragraph number on the list to keep the secrecy preserved. I also used the "Equipment List" as a "Purchase List" as well. I made up a "Victory Point List' (keeping the original points honored as much as possible,) so that I could use point-for-point victory points as "Re-Supply Purchases" at the end of the "Campaign." I defined, "Current Game" as when all ten activation checks were used up and all enemy units were deceased as an Ex-Parrot. For *"Event checks"* (AKA: random encounters, ) I use an 8-sided die (minus "8" for the seven games in my collection) to determine from which game I am going to use the stack of enemy/encounter cards (sorted by number for easy access), then roll a percentile (two ten-sided) result to find out which German/Japanese encounter is activated. I run them as I would run my own characters/soldiers. At the end of each round ("A" Soldier/Commander, for example), I made up a list that included ALL of the "Paragraph Books" entries that were attached to counters or special events (them friggin' land mines!!!) I even had a "Corpsman" before it was introduced in "Purple Heart" or "Silver Star." I just used "Claude" as a corpsman. When he entered a hex with a wounded soldier and spent an action, the wound went away and the soldier was restored; an incapacitated soldier was returned to "wounded" status, and a dragged incapacitated soldier rolled the "1" on-a-Ten-Sided die *every other hex* to expire in a loud, grotesque military manner. It's a pisser when the Corpsman is German/Japanese! Among above, if the pisser gets incapacitated soldiers off the map, they don't count for VP's! Hope the Herman German doesn't have a high DS, get a staff car & drives off the map with an incapacitated General, Aide de Camp and another soldier! *Point man!* The idio- er, brave soldier - who starts and finishes the mission walking into hexes first gets 1-2 combat points for being shot at the most: +1 for unsuccessful mission & +2 for a successful mission. The pipes burst in my basement game room, and all of my games (Pearl Harbor, GDW, also got the most wet. Fortunately, the counters dried without incident and the two pieces of glass protected the map. My counters were either under the water-resistant dust cover or stored in plastic assortment boxes. But the moisture got to them anyway and warped ts out of most of my AMBUSH (all in the entire collection) maps and manuals. Needless to say, pissed still after 6 years.) But only one map got unmarketable -- the rest are usable even though they are wavy. OH! &btw, I agree with others "Nice voice & great job on your vlog!

    @@GeekGamers01 Thank you. Very kind to say. Love the game! Pulled it out earlier today, going to try to make all 19 missions. But I'm in mission 1 and am already getting annoyed at how much time I have to read. But sooo looking forward to the point where it * clicks * and I don't have to rely on the turn sequence, fire & terrain modification pages and have it memorized! I recalled a time with my modified game, the event roll came up "Enemy opened sluice gates" and my stream turned into a river. Then the next event check places a bloody E-boat on the map! I was busy HA! You can take clippers to your pieces anyway -- no big deal. I've nipped a bit too much now and then, but it's hard to tell. It's easier to trim than to cut too much. 😄 I might do what you did and Xerox the pages of each paragraph book so I can keep the GE's common moves taped to the wall in front of me for faster reference.

    @@GeekGamers01 perhaps I could make a video showing how I do it. Wouldn't know the first thing about video production & posting -- might be handy to learn.i am trained, like you(?) to presentationally speak, but no where near your experience & talent. My rearranging the information might that I made things as complicated as the using the paragraph books :-i But I don't think so. When I hang my new charts (in 12 pt script), I can flit from one to the next. I only use the paragraph book to reveal the story. Which does honor your point regarding "...makes a novel..." Cool! Since you like to (also) make your own counters (my artistry is like a 10 year-old's, still @58), I could offer to send pics of the rule book/paragraph book of "Move Out!" for your kindness.
