Seems to not be for me. I've tried many similar "solo dungeon crawlers" and I just can't get behind the randomness they typically offer. On the other hand, I also dislike overly narrative or guided stories like you see in adventure game books like the Lone Wolf series. I've discovered I need a sandbox with some randomness, but randomness that feels well tied to the world. Barbarian Prince and The Drifter are my go-to choices these days. I'm starting to wonder if I really need anything else.
I love Barbarian Prince… wish someone would take that model and make other games with it. I’ve covered The Drifter and Space Drifter on the channel and enjoy them too. They don’t feel as “open world” to me as something like Barbarian Prince tho. If you are at all interested in a space theme, you might try to track down the old game Star Smuggler, which bears some resemblance to BP, albeit set in space and with some more complicate (some may say, convoluted) rules.
"I can't with the puppets...." 😆
I could not wrap my head around the usage die until you explained it. Thank you.
Gracias por tu explicación y tu partida, el rol en solitario es simplemente genial, saludos desde el fin del mundo Chile...
Oh to be able buy that tome anymore...at least within a reasonable price
Not sure if you consider this price reasonable but it is $60 on the Mythmere Games website for the second edition.
I can't with the puppets Me too, Geek Gamers, me too! 😂 If you ever roll up puppet from a random table, just change it to poppet: a small figure of a human being used in sorcery and witchcraft.
Love this idea!
Awwww, don't worry GG, Lambchop still loves you. Okay sorry, yeah that was bad. =P Good to see you looking into these last few old school... are they OSR games or just love letters to the AD&D era? Either way I'm definitely going to have to look at these.
Had to confirm I understood your Lamb Chop reference (before my time but ringing a dim bell). That was funny, actually- Anyhow: Knave is OSR and ShadowDark (assuming that is the other thing you refer to) is a stripped down 5E.
@@GeekGamers01 Yep, Lamp Chop of Lamb Chop's Play-Along, the early 1990's puppet show on TV. Responsible for classic gems like "This is the song that doesn't end!" =P Ah, didn't pick up that Shadowdark is a stripped down 5E. That's on me. Still going to look at both at some point
I only just heard about this recently and have been debating picking it up but most of what I have seen so far makes it seem more like a Choose Your Own Adventure book than an RPG. Combined with you saying it plays like a board game, I really get the impression that gameplay is more like a series of short adventures rather than a developing story/ campaign. There's a free intro that I may pick up to try it out.
Yes your impressions about it are correct.
This is a great story. I found, while playing Ronin last night, I am going through what I hope is a phase. I am not enjoying the “gaminess” of my solo time. Rather I do enjoy creating the story. Maze Rats seems to be a great way to just sit and tell a story. Well done! And thank you.
Sometimes I feel the same way and just like putting together a framework and that’s it…any interaction with rulesets is playing!
Yeah you've really sold this one. It just looks so good!
I love the simplicity of the oracle. I’ve used these rules with other games to make them solo and it has worked wonderfully. Another great video. Thank you!
Wow some sweet sweet tables in there to be sure!
☮
The herbalist and candlestick maker are crafting an herb-infused magic candle for use in a ritual to subvert their opposition. Rub-a-dub-dub, let's summon beetle-bub.
Just starting Ironsworn. So would you say this is the opposite essentially?
I wouldn’t say “opposite” per se but very very different. Completely different.
I used the Kn2e tables to create a town the other night. It was the best game prep session I’ve had in years! I can’t recommend this book enough.
I love all the tables in Knave 2e.
Excellent as always! Knave, Cairn, and Into the Odd are possibly some of the most "important" TTRPGs. I think Knave 2e was put together with a ton of care. Also the rules summary on the inside cover? Game changer, literally. (and I loathe how over-used that word is) random aside: I tried your inspiration method for rolling the page in a book when you need a nudge. The Conspirators by Dumas has come through for me a few times. Thanks for the idea to do that!
I like the 2nd die house rule for torch mishaps!
I neglected to show it but I use this really cool yellowish-swirly dice I have that looks torch-like…. Makes it even better.
I'm not a fan of Knave 2e, the game. It's clever in ways, but not to my taste. However it has to be the absolute best book of random tables on the market. Better than any book that is exclusively tables. They're so well designed.
I chose out of the 2 ttrpg's I love: D1000 Dungeon Mapping System and Shadowdark.
Thank you for your videos.
This book is such a great resource. I've played the original game but really, I backed this for the additional tables and the accompanying adventures and, of course, MAZE RATS. No puppets? awwww...
I just started a solo campaign with Knave 2e, which I love. I built my starting hex with Sandbox Generator and my dungeon with Dungeon Masters Guide 1e. Monsters and other things I get from Basic Fantasy Role-playing Game, my goto for OSR stuff.
Olde Swords Reign is another great resource like BFRPG. Basic Fantasy is legendary though.
For torches I’d recommend Knave 2E’s Hazard Die system on page 13. A torch burns out when a 3 is rolled. For the monster attacks, when there’s no special attack, maybe you could use the “Reversing Checks” mechanic in Knave 2E, page 7.
I once GM’ed a game where the PCs searched the coffin of a vampire. I used Maze Rats to see what they found and it said a page from a book. The book table then said “etiquette”. So the vampire had been reading a loose page about human etiquette while lying in his coffin so he could fit into society better. That’s a tiny story just from random tables like the ones in Knave and I love something like that 😊
Puppeteer could have meant something really different. And not necessarily a mind controlling wizard. Maybe a low-magic user that can animate things to do simple tasks. A necromantic apprentice who's just starting by manipulating the carcasses of small animals.
Puppeteer isn't mind controlling at all. It is the mundane career, so it literally means someone who uses puppets in performance. I think she is just creeped out by puppets.
@@MagnificentDevil There's a period between the first two sentences.
Even the word “puppeteer.” I just couldn’t!
Cool.
"I can't with the puppets" not on my GG Quote Bingo Card today.... ;)
Every time I think "I wish this game had more videos on youtube" you post it! Very cool
Knave 2e does have a town events table.
This is a wonderful video! Knave 2e is my go-to game. It is fantastic for solo play. Thank you for covering it.
Hi. Do you play true solo or multiple characters? How do you handle scaling if single character?
@@furalyon845 I play both ways. If I'm playing true solo, I make sure to have a follower that can carry torches and such. For encounters, I cut the number of creatures appearing by a factor of 3 or 4, to a minimum of 1 (of course). Beyond that, everything else flows normally.
What's the problem with the puppeteer? 😂
I’m assuming she does not like the movie Child’s Play! 😂
Some people are creeped out by puppets
I just can’t with the puppets!!
Have you checked Old Swords Reign? Almost the same thing at cost.
Thanks! Alas, it seems impossible to get a physical copy anywhere at the moment, but I shall pre-order for the reprint...
On the problem or "problem" of starting with Character Creation instead of World Generation, would you argue that is a problem of Soloists thinking like a player and forgetting that they need to think like a game master as well? Or focusing on stats over narrative?
Yes that is what I’ve written in my book. I understand the impulse and it isn’t a matter of “right” or “wrong” (as there is no right or wrong way), but I don’t think starting with characters ultimately is the easier way, or more fruitful way.
Ive seen this at my FLGS was t sure about buying. I am starting to use heroquest with the app as a way to have adventures for yhe characters i have. And in making my backstory ive had good results. Plus, Heroquest combat isnsuper simple. Maybe too simple. Ill take a look at this again
I’ve been tempted by HeroQuest and the app but having looked at the app it seems like you have to enter in too much info for my taste.
I think it is recognizing 2 details. Video games are not enough, and role gaming through a computer isn't enough. Not everyone can find a group. And enough of us are not interested in playing through an interface. I'd rather play my role games with my teddy bears than distant strangers. It's the same with my board game wargames. I have been buying a number of well made solo wargames lately.
I’d ,over to know what solo wargame you have gotten recently
@@GeekGamers01 well if you search 'solo wargame' you will get a lot of the cliche. I have several from a single designer Mike Lambo, a gold mine. The best place to find good solo wargame titles is Wargame Vault through DrivthruRPG. I focus on WW2 subjects. But the market has a lot to choose from.
Thank you for making this video! I just rolled up my characters to try out a Solodark campaign last night - so the helpful tips in this video have come to me just in time! :D Great video!
I have never played Shadow Dark. I jave heard people talk about it, but it never intrested me until now. I have been playing The Thirty Moons System solo and this seems like a nice change of pace. Them being nearly polar opposites. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
I never get tired of your reviews!
Shadowdark rules! Geek gamers rules!🗡️🐉✨
A note on Advantage on rolls and creating your character's back ground. There is a background table, and if an action (non combat) can reasonably be tied to that background you have Advantage on your roll.
Thanks for pointing out that great rule!
It only took a year and a half for this video to manifest according to the will of the dice 🎲
Love your videos and those books are beautiful. I’ve played Shadowdeep a few times with a friend but I’m dispraxic and struggle with rules and numbers. I enjoy the simplicity of HeroQuest. Is there a solo game at that level?
Glad you like my vids. Have you played the D& D board games. Ravenloft and others in that series? That comes to mind first….they offer a good deal of theme and tactical combat with relatively simple mechanics and clear rules.
Rory's story cubes are as symbolic and freeform as you can get. There is a framework within which to play it called Untold: Adventure Awaits! I haven't played it, but it's on my list.
Shadowdark is a true standout in a crowd. I have been very impressed with the game and its creator. The game lends itself well to many aspects of the hobby including solo play. It was a very smart move by Arcane Library to send you the books! Cheers!
Very concise and easily digestible points. I like this format. Thank you for the content!
Amazing as usual :) I'd like to ask a thing I have in my mind since I discovered solo rpg: is there a way to use a module for any RPG system in solo play? I mean, I have tons of amazing D&D modules I'd like to play solo, but don't understand how to use them because if I have to read them I still know everything so what to do in these cases? TY
Yes modules can be hard that way unless you just use them for the information itself, randomizing it somehow, and not following the actual story since there isn’t a way to do that without actually knowing the story and reading it…
If you are familiar with Mythic GME, there is a great way to do exactly that using Mythic. I beleive it is in the Mythic GME 2e core book.
Very nice video. I didn't realize Kelsey had put out a hard copy of the SoloDark rules ( I have the pdf).
