Aspect ratio of first 1:45 is off. This corrects and then messes up again later. This was not how the vid originally appeared and I don’t know why it happened.

I absolutely LOVE playing this game solo. It's INCREDIBLY brutal to the pirate, which seems very realistic. My first trip out, my crew got scurvy, almost mutineed, my ship was leaky, and we had to dock for repairs, while we only preyed on lowly traders who had JUNK in their holds. AWESOME game. (A little like doing your taxes, but the narrative is AWESOME!)

Thanks for the review! I have the original game and have loved it. I agree with your critique about the board... some of the older AH games had these kind of boards "Storm over Arnheim" and "Raid in St. Nazaire". It's great to see some aspects of this game explained... much thanks.

Finally getting through reading the rules for this game after having tried 3 times but put them down for so long it required re-reading! I'm going to try it solitaire first to get a better feel for play before I try teaching my wife how to play. Thanks for the walk through. This has helped a lot.

Glad the video was of help and thank you for taking the time to comment. Honestly if I were going to take it out again right now I'd have to watch my own video too to remember some things. There is a lot to like in this game however and I've been thinking I want to play it again soon which I don't think I've done since making this vid. Hope you and your wife enjoy the game!

Just got this in a trade. Your video has helped a lot with guiding me through the rules, as while they are written well enough, I tend to have trouble with GMT from an accessibility standpoint. Thanks!

Hi. Just saw this comment. Thanks so much and glad this has helped. Yes, I totally agree in general about GMT rules and games. I find that no matter how much I read any ruleset it always helps to have the game on the table since when you start moving things around it can make rules clearer, or at least highlight what is being misunderstood.

Head to home depot and get a big sheet of plexiglas. You can get it cut down to various sizes to fit bigger and smaller maps. Every game I own has board warping with minutes of cracking the shrink wrap, so it's a must have for me, and would sure come in handy here :)

Yes totally right. If you watch other vids of mine you'll see me break out the plexiglass. In the case of Blackbeard they'd have been better off with paper as in the first edition of the game.

Great stuff! This game is on my list of stuff I want to play. There are two common solutions for the map buckling issue - and even GMT's mounted maps tend to do this. The traditional one is to set a sheet of clear plexiglass over it. The other is to tape the corners down with painter's tape, which should come off cleanly when you're done.

  • @GeekGamers01

Glad you liked the video and thanks for commenting. I do use plexiglass when playing on paper-mounted maps (you can see this in some of my other videos). For some strange reason I have an aversion to putting plexiglass over something that is mounted, even when not mounted well. Partially it is because in some cases then the plexiglass itself just is pushed up. Anyhow, the next time I take this game out, I'll stick my plexi over it and see how that goes.

I put plexi over basically everything, then tape the plexi down because I am an oaf and will otherwise jostle the whole thing.

  • @Conflict_Boardgaming

Plexi is your best friend. I started using it a few years ago for my wargame maps, and have never looked back. Indeed, I currently have about 6 sheets of plexi, 4 still sealed and put away in reserve. Some people dislike plexi, for various reasons that are understandable. But I love it!

Hah. Well. maybe someday. I lost 49 minutes of a video on VOYAGE that I spent so much time preparing I don't have the heart for it now. It is a wonderful game and I hope you enjoy it. My tip is that if you are so inclined, mark off the paragraphs that you use the first time through. If you play again immediately (or soon thereafter) and roll to a similar paragraph, you an always re-roll. This way you won't play the same game two times in a row. Of course you can't do this forever but that's how I play. I made a copy of the paragraphs so I don't need to write on the actual ones. Enjoy! If I do ever get around to redoing a Pandora video (never say never) I will try to remember to let you know.

Notes: Cargo holds - every row of 4 boxes represents 1 cargo space as one floor of lower deck. "All" means the most bottom lower deck of ship, it is a basic cargo space for all ships. then, Sloop has two lower decks, Schooner has 3 lower decks, Brigatine has 4 lower decks. Each lower deck can accommodate the loot of one merchant ship only.

I just picked this up in Spain today, reasonably priced. There are lovers and haters of this game I noticed on BGG. I don't think it's maybe one that people will play at my war gaming club BUT probably decent for solo play I thought. Interesting to see German language also on the back of my box. Thematically which pirate games better this game, Merchants & Marauders ? Black Fleet ? Jamaica ? not many me thinks.

The only other pirate game I've played is Pathfinder Skull & Shackles--hardly possible to compare. It's not a theme often gamed--I've been meaning to get to M&M for a while now. Don't know the others you mention but will look them up. I think you may be right about your war gaming club, especially if they are stickler for what makes a "wargame." Possibly the original to this game would be more palatable to them, though I haven't played that either so can't really assess that. This game plays well solo for me, in the manner I discuss in the video. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks for commenting.

The A B C D markers are numbered for how many pirates in play you have. A and B have four. Because you could have up to four pirates in play. D and E only have two, because in a four or five player game you may only have two pirates in play.

Depending on why you feel it falls short, you may (or may not) like the original edition of the game better than this one. Of course, if you have this one and are "meh" about it, I can't imagine why you'd seek out an earlier (out of print) edition!

In truth, the earlier games that I used these nail clippers on are far inferior to the games I'm doing now. Like the more expensive counter clippers, there is a bit of an art to doing it such that you aren't butchering things too much. I cringe a little when I see some of the early clipping I did!

WysteriaGuitar I really wish I could. I have only played the skulls and shackles version of Pathfinder Adventure Card game and while I like it it’s certainly not a wargame and in some ways the theme is very light. Many love Merchants and Marauders but I have yet to play it.

I don't think that's possible. Blackbeard (Avalon Hill, 1991) have a DISASTROUS rulebook. I bought it when it came out and I tried to read it and tried to begin a game but had to give up. It have sit on my shelf for more than 25 years unopened. But now that I have watched calandale's videos I think I may have another go at it. ^^ (calandale rocks!) Edit: I have two GMT games, and they are WAY better than Blackbeard (AH). However, I rather play the original than this, and I am saddened that on the backside of the pirate cards in the new version there's no backstory.
