Hey there, Liron here!
In today's video I want to share with you all of the green watercolor paints I have.
These are of Winsor & Newton, Schmincke and Daniel Smith.
Here are the colors in the correct order:
1. Winsor (aka Phthalo) Green (Winsor & Newton)
2. Phthalo Green (Schmincke)
3. Olive Green (Schmincke)
4. Perylene Green (Schmincke)
5. Undersea Green (Daniel Smith)
6. Sap Green (Daniel Smith)
7. Green Apatite Genuine (Daniel Smith)
8. May Green (Schmincke)
I also thought it would be cool to actually visually represent them in the way I own them (tubes, pans and inside palette wells).
I hope you enjoyed this one, and I'll see you in another video real soon (;
- Liron

Great idea to paint images instead of swatches. This method really shows off the colors much better than regular swatches.

Thanks Liron. Green has always been a bugbear of mine, particularly Viridian Green, but your comparison method is great. Love it. The Perylene Green would make useful shadings in Botanical or similar type studies.

Hmmm! your voice sounds good ... That aside I like the way you presented the greens in different setting. I've had a love hate relationship with greens... I am now using a lot more Daniel Smith and love Perylene green and that Apatite is one I will get. I don't like any kind of thalo although many artists' do use it a lot.. One thing I've never liked are the bright greens that some artists will paint on the trees. It always looks so artificial..So I prefer the darker greens or adding a bit of yellow to them ... Anyway just my 2 cents. oh yes , Jeanne Dobie ... her book on Making Color Sing ... I've never seen so many ways to mix green. !!!

Hi Liron, this was interesting. I kind of like all of the greens. I do have DS Sap Green and Green Apatite Genuine. Since I tend to just mix greens, I'd have to look to see if I have any other greens. I do have a Duochrome tube from DS. When it is dropped into a wet area on paper it will sometimes split into a bronze and a kind of green color. It's good for painting cacti and other desert scenes. I don't use it much; but, it's good for some things.

Hi Liron, the Duochrome paint from Daniel Smith is called Duochrome Desert Bronze. It's bronze; at the same time, it can manifest as green. Sometimes, it can show both bronze and green. It's really interesting.

Thanks so much for sharing all your greens :) I am intrigued by the may green and can see you've done a separate video on that, so off I go to that one :) I am looking at what greens to purchase. Aesthetically I LOVE the blue-greens, but practically I use the more yellow-greens. It's hard to choose what I need. I'm thinking I'll get a sap green and maybe another, I'm not sure. In my head I'm thinking maybe a forest green kind of colour. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

It breakes my heart that you think the olive green is boring.... green is my favorite color, I've loved this video! I was wondering if you tried mix the may green with an yellowish (is this a word? Help) red? I try to do this to get an darker green, usually it works well. Loved your swatches!

Very interesting - I'll give it a go, as I really loved the May Green. I did mix it with some yellows, which was really fun. And "yellowish" is a word by my standards 😂.

The Olive Green by Schmincke I find really beautiful, but its not very lightfast. The permanent version is rather boring. I was so disappointed to find out the Olive green was not lightfast. I bought it when I was really new to watercolor. I hope you can do another series like these when you have better lighting and stuff. Really enjoy your videos, I am learning a ton and its so cool to hear about pigments, there are not so many many channels that talk about the nerdy stuff. Love it, thanks so much !

Yes, as a green lover, I enjoy seeing what other painters have. I've got 20+ (yes, ridiculous I know), but I don't have that D.S. Green Apatite and wish I hadn't seen it...now I've gotta have it. Yes, I have an art supply collecting problem :D)

do you still use sap green, since you have other colours to mix it up easily? I am asking, because so many use it and name it in tutorials. but I never want to buy too many different colours at once. don't want huge palletts. and since I know, how easy it can be mixed, I would never buy it. also may green. easy to mix. I still have one, because I baught it too early. before I knew some mixes. it can be useful thoug, in abstrakt paintings, when a bigger amount and thick paste is needed. but apart from that, acutally easy to mix. I wonder, what esle one can do with it in the pure form. is it ma special colour for other mixes?

If you have a palette with angled wells you can actually separate out the Green Apatite from the very bright green color and the darker, granulating sediment. Sent you a pic demonstrating this on your instagram.

Yes - both of these have a great value range and would be good for mono. I believe the Perylene Green can go even darker, so I would use that 😁

pg7 greens tend to be the same, i swatched at least 8 brands' paints and only noticed difference in how dark their value can get. I enjoyed this a lot, I think I will do something similar with my paints too :D

Another very interesting video. :) I agree that the Schmincke Olive Green is extremely boring. Furthermore, it looks nothing like the colour of olives either, I don't think. I am not sure I would eat an olive that colour. :P Other olive greens like the olive green by Winsor and Newton are better, I think.

Hi Liron, pleased to see you see the importance of green. If you read chapter 4 of Jeanne Dobie's book 'Making Color Sing' you will be opened to a whole world of green with a limited palette using pure pigment watercolor. Look at her picture also on page 26, beautiful example of glazing techniques and greens as a dominant feature 🤗
