Hi there!
In today's episode of The Paint Show we'll be looking at Daniel Smith's Perylene Red!
(On the next episode we'll finally take a break from Daniel Smith and look at other brands, promise!)
ME AND THIS PAINT
This is a tube I originally got from Daniel Smith's Primary set, alongside French Ultramarine and Hansa Yellow Medium.
I didn't like the particular color combination, but I did like each color individually.
And Perylene Red was my favorite!
Also, REDS in general are Daniel Smith's forte, in my opinion.
If you want to get this tube, here's a purchase link (affiliate):

PERYLENE
So perylene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.
The name comes from Rylene. When more naphthanlene units are linked, it turns into Perylene, and can also turn to terrylene and quarterrylene (I assume those stand for 2, 3 and 4 units added, respectively).
According to wiki, perylene is a hazardous pollutant, but according to HandPrint, all perylene pigments are non-toxic (and by the way - don't contain metal, which is another plus).
You can read more about perylene on HandPrint:
www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/pigm...
OR
www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/wate... (search the page for PR178)
And also on Wikipedia:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rylene_dye
PAINT INFO
Pigment: PR178
This pigment goes through a significant shift when drying.
It will lighten slightly and loose about 20% of its saturation (this is all according to HandPrint.
(I didn't notice such a significant difference).
It's also highly active in wet-in-wet, and creates large blossoms.
Excellent Lightfastness
Semi-Transparent
Medium-Staining
Non-Granulating
Series 3 - goes on Amazon for ~13$-14$.

CONCLUSION
I hope you enjoyed this vid!
This is one of my favourite reds, and I find that I just LOVE perylene-based colors (for example Schmincke's Perylene Dark Red and Perylene Green).
And on the next few episode we'll look at paints by other brands!
Again, if you want to get this tube or set, here are the affiliate links...

And I'll see you again in another vid, real soon (:

I love the paint show! This one seems nice just as a red...I do like the dark created with the ultra blue.

Thanks Liron... excellent demo... especially appreciated showing it against other reds. This is another one I've been curious about. I'm not awake enough to figure out why but I don't care for that pigment. Full strength it actually looks opaque on my monitor. I do like the gold it made with Hansa but that's about it for my palette.

Yes - it definitely has its own character, won’t be a fit for everyone 😛 I think Schmincke’s Perylene Dark Red is a little more versatile. Thank you!

I use it as my dark red in my set as it leans a bit to the cooler side of red, tfs

Thank you! It was hard for me to tell whether it’s cooler or warmer. I guess a lot of this is relative too (:

I really like hansa yellow and french ultramarine but not so much perylene red, but where I live I actually save $5 if I buy the set than hansa yellow and french ultramarine separately lol

I don't have Perylene Red. From your demo here, this color looks really strong. It might easily overpower some of the other colors that you might want to try it with. Play around with it more and you'll discover just how much of the red to use with other colors to create the mixes you want.

Very true, it’s very strong and won’t be fit to everyone (: As I said in another comment here, I think Schmincke’s Perylene Dark Red is a little more versatile.

Ok. Love your show, mainly this intensive single pigment series. I could watch even the ‘popular’ pigments done this way. Honestly I already own too many paints, so I was watching more for information. I love my perelynes (green, maroon), and I also am a bit DS quinacridone fan for reds. Grrrrrr. By the time you’d mixed it with the blues, and I could see the amazing blossom textures (looks as crazy as QOR!) I had to go look for your amazon link! Hope you get some benefit buying through your links. By the way, don’t think everyone prefers variety of brands, if DS is rocking your boat then keep going! Xx (Melbourne,Australia)

Thank you for your nice comment 😁🙏🏼 I’m really happy this helps! It’s super expensive to just go out and buy all of these, so hopefully people can enjoy them that way (or maybe it makes people buy more 🤔). I do get a small commission when you use my links - so I thank you for that 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Your Hansa Yellow Med looks more lemony than mine. I thought it was a really close middle yellow. Thank you for the highlight of Perylene red.

May I ask about that palette box. Is there clear plastic involved with color swatches on paper under the clear plastic. Who makes it?

  • @LironYan

    @LironYan

    6 жыл бұрын

I made the swatches 😊 Today I wouldn’t, but back then I was a little more obsessed with knowing exactly which pint is where. The palette is great for that, as it comes with an extra tray. So all you have to do really is cut out a piece of paper that’s the right side, and insert it under that extra transparent tray 😁

Hey, not sure if you found the model - it's a Mijello Airtight Palette - I think this is the 18 well version. There's also 24 and 33 well options (they don't come with transparent insert though, just white mixing insert). It's pretty cheap on Amazon right now - www.amazon.com/Martin-Mijello-Airtight-Watercolor-18-Well/dp/B0049UZEWQ/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522448890&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=mission+mijello+airtight

I bought that primary set and finally gave up in frustration at the strange separating tendency of that red when combined with the blue+yellow - I kept getting ugly orange blotches and edge-stains in my earth tones. Even on the palette the red didn't want to stay mixed together with the blue - it separated out. Yuk.
