Hi there, Liron here!
Today I've got another episode of The Paint Show for you! This time we'll be looking at UNDERSEA GREEN, which is the last paint we are covering from Daniel Smith's Secondary set!
I'll consolidate them all into one playlist on my channel, so you can check out the original review and The Paint Show episodes.

ME & UNDERSEA GREEN
I got this one, too, with Daniel Smith's Secondary set. This one impressed me from the beginning, though I wasn't sure what I'll use it for.
With time I started using it for foliage (while varying with blues and yellows), and then also for muted paintings where the light is dim.
This is a beautiful gray green.
PAINT INFO
Undersea Green is made of three different pigments:
1. Ultramarine Blue (PB29)
2. Quinacridone Gold (they say PO48, but that's the pigment for Quinacridone Burnt Orange, which is a little strange. Quin. Gold should be PO49).
3. Nickel Azo Yellow (PY150)
This makes it rather simple to mix.
Series 1 - so cheaper than Quin. Burnt Orange.
Semi-transparent
Granulating (with a beautiful effect too! The blues and yellows separate)
Medium-high staining.
This color is highly pigmented and is easy to achieve dark values with.
The website I mention wasn't that relevant so I don't see a reason to include it here.
CONCLUSION
I hope you enjoyed this episode of The Paint Show.
In the next ones I hope to show some other brands 😁

Gorgeous color...but I find it easy to make with Ph. Blue, New Gamboge, and Pyrrol Scarlet. Probably one could make this with any of the primaries and a little experimentation. That being said, I still have a tube! I’m a true believer in a limited palette, a warm and cool or each primary - I think it’s what all beginners should use, because it teaches you so much about color and harmony. A lot of really good artists mix all their colors themselves from the primaries. But it’s fun to have these interesting colors, and I do use them. Just saying, if you are limited financially, you don’t have to buy them.

Yes, the PO49 was discontinued several years ago. The original Under Sea Green used to be made with Quin gold PO49 and Ultramarine blue PB29. I research several years ago the pigment companies and was told that PO48 and PO49 come from the exact same source being the same pigment but the hue varies from warm to cool. The auto industry stopped ordering the PO49 cooler one so they wont even produce it anymore. But the PO48 is still popular. The best way to make a quin gold hue is PY150 and PO48. This is how they do it now, although some companies will add it a touch of PV19 to the mix making it look more authentic.

Not an essential green for me, but I love it so much. I never got to use the old formula with PO49 in it as DS had stopped using PO49 in convenience mixtures by the time I got into watercolor a couple years ago. I love it for shadows or quick background washes, but it can also be charged nicely with other colors like quin rose.

  • @LironYan

Yes - they generally recommend using Quins. with it. I’m still unsure why they write PO48 and Quinacridone Gold next to it on the tube.

Liron Yanconsky on my tubes of Quin Gold PO49 is identified as Quin Gold Deep. I always ignore that and go by pigment number. It’s more reliable.

I enjoyed this demo very much. I think the lemon yellow was a little too high key for the result you were trying to get. Just my opinion that a yellow leaning more toward a goldenrod would probably have brought you closer to the actual tube color. I love your experiments, paintings, techniques, etc. You are so talented!🖌🎨

You can google "color index number Po48" and find that the color index name of PO48 is Quinacridone Gold and PO49 is Quinacridone Deep Gold. I think that paint names are not exactly the same as pigment name, thus some "confusion".

I should’ve paid more attention to your video. When I use from the tube, great. Dry dark. The second I put water to it, it goes totally watery-grey! Help! Please recommend the best(in your experience) green. I didn’t want to go back to plain old Sap Green, but I may have to. Right now, I’m using Gamboge/French Ultramarine to make greens that stand water and do well. Should I just mix my own? Any help appreciated. Love your tutorials. Thx.

I am new to watercolor painting and love this green with the phthalo blue, but I’m confused.. When I looked to buy a tube it seems to come as phthalo blue green or phthalo blue red. Is there a brand that has just phthalo blue? If not, am I correct that the blue green version would result in the results you show? Thank you.

  • @LironYan

I believe mine was actually a Red Shade actually 😅 But I will say - for a more accurate result, the superior version is indeed the green shade (though it’s not a huge difference). I believe some brands do only have one version, but not sure which ones of the top of my head (:

What is the difference between French Ultramarine and Ultramarine Blue?

  • @Donna_G

    @Donna_G

    6 жыл бұрын

Hi Rita, I believe French Ultramarine is a stronger blue with a little more granulation than Ultramarine blue. A tube of French Ultramarine will cost more than a tube of Ultramarine Blue; but, that French Ultramarine will outlast two tubes of Ultramarine Blue, when all other aspects are equal. I use French Ultramarine.
