I am the owner of 7 rats, and your videos are and were so helpful when I originally started owing rats a few years ago. Their such wonderful critters and I’m glad I found your videos to help me give them the best lives

The one big hammock is so true. I feel bad after a cage clean if the hammocks aren't big enough for all 9, and they all go into smaller groups but still try to stay together haha!

Oh, sweethearts! My 4 boys like sleeping together, but for some reason they don't like big hammocks. I always have 1 in, but they just use it to get around, it even looks like it's in their way haha. And then they go squish into a tiny place together even though my room is quite warm xD

I love watching your videos. I have 4 boys. They are separated in pairs. Unfortunately I have 2 alphas and they are very different in age. One pair are 6 months old from a breeder. The other pair are over 2 year old rescues. I wish I could get them together, but we have already had blood shed just through the bars between my cage levels. Thanks again for your expertise.

I would say that biting through bars is very different to how they interact when properly introduced. It’s quite normal for rat’s who are aggressive through the bars to be fine when introduced. However you want to give them time when they haven’t got any contract through the bars to calm down for say a week then try a proper intro

She’s a bit in between a few varieties lol. Genetically I suspect she’s variegated however one half is closer to hooded/bareback and the other closer to capped. Basically she’s mismarked lol which is what we call anything that doesn’t really fit a particular standard though I tend to call her “marked“. She’s lovely though.

The cluttered cage set up is very nice. I have DCN, somewhat similar to that, with two stories. I was thinking about taking the middle level out to make one very tall cage and using shelves and things to fill it up and create fall protection. Do you think leaving the middle level in for more floor space is a better use of the room? I have all boys currently, various ages.

I think a DCN style cage offers plenty of floor space as it is, but do keep in a couple of shelves (turning them into litter trays) to give a bit more space. Must say my rat’s have gained muscle since opening up the cage and offering more climbing opportunities (rather than ramps and such). You may need to take things slowly in terms of ramping up the difficulty if you’ve got older lads but it is well worth it to increase those activity levels, especially combined with scatter feeding

I am a hamster owner who is hooked on your videos, i am binge watching and now looking forward to the Doe series, I might just have to try being a rat owner soon :-) I love my hammy though, and actually I have noticed some small overlaps which has been interesting. Just for your info, the sound was very quiet on this one, may be because you were up a ladder, i needed my external speaker on and turned up full still listenable though :-) Thank you for sharing your knowledge x

It probably didn’t help that Chocobo chewed through my mike cable so I no longer have a mike. Thanks for letting me know I will get another one. Hamsters are lovely, I had one years ago, they are super cute

Isamu Rat Care, I’m honestly not sure... I work in theatre and worked on a play with a rat called Toby (played by 2 female rats that used to live in wardrobe) who I fell in love with but unfortunately both got taken off the show for developing mamory tumors. Which is why I was considering males? But sounds like they all have their ups and downs. Absolutely loving your videos and been binge watching recently to try learn as much as possible!

Health wise Mammary tumours are more common in does, as are a couple other conditions, however Bucks have there own health challenges like hld and kidney issues come in earlier. On the whole does tend to live on average longer than bucks but tend to be more expensive health wise in both cases because you can do more to help does health issues, where with most of the conditions in bucks you end up doing quality of life management until it’s time to let them go
