    I have 17 rats in my home.13 bucks and 4 does. I'm so glad I'm not the only crazy rat lady. Lol. My eldest boys are 2 now and are really slowing down which breaks my heart. One of my girls died at 17 months old and I had to have one of my sweet boys put to sleep last month as he has struggling to breathe. Baytril wasn't working and I couldn't let him suffer. I just wish they lived longer than they do. Thank you for this informative video.

    Yes I have very much noticed that with does you have to make 'that' decision, most of my bucks have gone peacefully and its rare its been at the vets. Also I feel that the girls tend it put up with more before they show it and you have to be extra vigilant. This is a thoroughly interesting series of videos.

    Definitely, it makes sense really, in the wild the doe needs to be able to push through and hide when she’s in a bad way when she has young to defend. When a buck is in a bad way they are no longer going to be able to compete to father litters so there’s not a lot of biological drivers to mask it in the same way.

    Quick question. I have one male that lives alone because he hates all other rats. I have tried multiple intros with different boys with no success. He is at least two years old so I was wondering if it's safe to neuter a rat that is elderly?

  • @IsamuRatCare

    @IsamuRatCare

    If he’s fit and well and in good shape for his age then yes neutering is an option as is an implant. Within a couple of weeks of castration he would be able to go in with some doe friends

    I have a 7 mo old buck with severe HLD, which I'm thinking is a UTI? Something with kidneys: there isn't pain outright, it seems, but lethargy and inactivity. How do I do a urine test? So appreciative for your wisdom, thanks very much for your videos.

    I’m so glad you made this video so that I know what to watch out for. I have a question for you since I think you’d know best: is there a fresh or dry healthy, high copper food that I can supplement into my rats’ diet? I’m based in the US so unfortunately RatRations isn’t an option for me :(

  • @IsamuRatCare

    @IsamuRatCare

    Fresh food wise liver is a very good source of copper (best cooked) however it’s high in vitamin a too which has a relatively low toxicity level in rats so limit it to once a week. Dark green leafy veg eg kale and some cabbages are also decent sources Dried mushrooms (obviously human edible ones only) are a great dried source of copper

    Thank you for your videos! I am hoping to adopt some rats in the near future and am researching extensively before committing. I was wondering -- for a first-time rat owner, would you recommend females or males? From watching your videos, I understand both have their own pros and cons, but is there a sex that would potentially make a better first-time pet?

  • @IsamuRatCare

    @IsamuRatCare

    Honestly either from a good breeder. They have there pros and cons like you say but both make great first time pets. People will find themselves naturally favouring one sex over another but you learn that in time. I prefer does but amusingly bucks adore me (I get called the buck whisperer by some people lol). If you don’t have a strong preference I would go to a breeder and say either sex, and see which fall your way. It generally increases your chances of getting them sooner

    Hullo! I have a bit of an odd question for you- do you know of a plan-b for rats? I do fostering and recently received a litter + mom, and when time came to separate the boys there was a bit of a logistical kerfuffle getting them to a girl-free foster and I've wound up keeping them a few more days than I would have liked. Just this morning I woke up to one of my (personal pet) adult girls having decided to pull shenanigans and get out of their cage and into bed with me instead. When I went to put her back, I saw with great horror that the two boys had managed to pull the worst coincidence ever and break out of their cage as well! I have no idea if they managed to do anything at all, given that the boys only turned five weeks yesterday and they may very well still be entirely uninterested in girls still. But better safe than sorry, right? Would you know of any emergency contraceptive I could give my lady?

    Yes you can dose with galastop (cabergolin) which will safely cause them to reabsorb the babies even quite late in the pregnancy (though I wouldn’t risk it later than day 19). There’s a study here that gives the dosage and evidence which is useful to show to your vet www.researchgate.net/profile/Hiroaki_Negishi/publication/14144715_Prevention_and_termination_of_pregnancy_in_rats_by_cabergoline_a_dopamine_agonist/links/00463533b46a821345000000/Prevention-and-termination-of-pregnancy-in-rats-by-cabergoline-a-dopamine-agonist.pdf?origin=publication_detail

    Anything to add to diet for kidney issues? I'm in the US. I've got one male who turned 1 in February. He does have a lot of fat around his heart according to an X-ray and he does like to put his head out off the edge of his space pod (don't know if it's breathing or because he's like as long as my forearm)

    I have three young bucks and two play fight often and the bigger one almost always humps the other to claim dominance. My third rat though, I see often hiding. Is this still normal? They aren’t adults. He eats well, grooms, the other two do visit with him and snuggle and groom but he just doesn’t play or come out to free roam willingly. I’ve had them five maybe six weeks now. Should I be concerned for a health issue? I just spent my vet budget on my rats first check ups but now I don’t have any funds for another month or more unless it is a visible emergency. Any help would be AWESOME! Thank you.

    @@IsamuRatCare he’s a fawn veregated fancy rat. He just got over having ringworm and treatment too so he wasn’t handled as much as the other two. Everytime he is out and I allow him to come to me with a treat he seems terrified if I try to bring him out and will hide for the rest of the day. Idk if he’s happy but he’s not ostracized by the two other boys and he eats from my hand if he pokes out with curiosity. He’s just never been able to free roam this whole time. Or popcorn play and I don’t ever hear his bruxing or other signs of contentment.

    He may have fairly poor eye sight so find the whole area more daunting. Are you free ranging in a large area like a room? If so I would try giving it a couple weeks of small sofa free range with them and him, build up his confidence
