I get it from a variety of places like home stores for baskets and planters, online parrot shops like northern and scarlets parrots and minipetz, oh and I forage for some too. If your on Facebook it’s worth joining the group naturalistic and bioactive rat setups for ideas and links, we’ve started to get more international members now so if your not U.K. based that might help

I'm always nervous about getting wooden toys and branches for my rats because I know some woods can be dangerous for them to chew. Is the wood on bird toys always safe for them? If not how can you make the difference and how and where do you get safe branches and logs for them?

Basically if it’s a bird toy it’s fine, birds are a lot more delicate than rat’s in general

I really want to get 2 or 3 rats and I get confused on animal diet a lot so I was wondering if someone could answer my question. Can you feed rats dry food mix in the morning ( 9am) and then vegetables in the evening (6pm) and thats it or do you just feed them once all together? Is there anything else they need?

You can do that yes, I tend to feed veg a couple times a week but really it’s very much a case of trying and seeing how the rats do on it. There’s a video looking at condition that may help

Do you think a Coco Large is a reasonable cage for 3 does? They're out 2-5 hours every day with a whole room to roam, climbing opportunities up the curtains/shelves etc

It’s a good cage definitely! I have 3 does in a Coco Large now, and it was my original plan with getting rats.

Looks amazing! How do you make sure the branches are mite free/ rat safe?

I give them at least a few weeks indoor drying time away from the rats, often longer for thick branches, and give them a good spray with a decent antibacterial. This effectively quarantines them s as well as ensuring that for the types of wood that need drying out to be safe that they are well dried out. I should add I check the wood is rat safe first

where can I get branches for my rats cage from?

You can buy some branches typically sold for parrots eg Java wood branches. Alternatively you can forage for rat safe woods from gardens and parks
