Eye issues; focus on Glaucoma

This video looks at rat Glaumomas in particular which is a swollen eye, however I also cover ulcerated corneas and a general chat about some of the other eye issues. It follows Fai, a kitten who developed a Glaucoma at just over 6 weeks old.

I do plan to yes, I’ve been waiting for one of my lot to have an appropriate issue but resp and heart aren’t common in my line so I may have to rely on some old videos I took. It’s definitely one that I will do at some point though

@@IsamuRatCare She was born in April, but she is pretty tiny for her age so I'm a bit concerned. We had a litter of space aliens in September and they are almost as big as her (some of them of course) 🙈 Based from the picture you had on the video, she would be in the first "stage". The affected eye is just slightly bigger. I have noticed that a couple of days ago. Otherwise she is her normal quirky selv (luckily!)

Very interesting and informative video, and Fai made it entertaining, as well! I have an eye-related question--I have a new rat who sleeps with his eyes open, is this common? He can blink, I watched him obsessively until I saw him blink several times. He doesn't have any issues with his eyes like you described in this video and is otherwise very healthy.

Hello! I do not wish to take up some of your time, but unfortunately I gave a question about introducing my ratties. I am introducing my 2 adult females to my 2 "baby" females and I've placed them in the carrier and they haven't slept in one rat pile yet, just 2 separate piles (babys with the babys and adults with the adults) I have left them overnight but their still sleeping in 2 piles. Should I move to the next step or wait until they sleep together? Thanks for tour time!! ❤

I’d probably give them a little bit longer, unless they are happy to interact with each other generally (eg wander over and from each other or together)

Hi, I’m wondering if anyone can give me some advice. I have unfortunately given myself a mammoth task with this but anyway, here we go. I adopted an unneutered male buck called Mowgli a few weeks ago with the intention of introducing him to my six boys. Mowgli’s previous owner had him living alone in an empty hamster cage; he’s now about 6 months old, same age as my other bucks. He’s a curious chap but does bite humans sometimes (aggressively, it will break the skin) however I’ve been working on it and we’ve got to a point where he trusts me and the biting has gone down. Now for the tough bit. I wanted to intro him to my six boys. They’re a fairly settled group apart from some minor scuffles towards the bottom of the hierarchy. I decided to intro Mowgli to the alpha, Buggie, and the second-in-command (is this a thing? 😂) Arlo, first, with the intention of him not getting overwhelmed with six rats at once. Buggie is a calm and fair alpha and generally more of a peace maker than a rat who forces others to submit to him. I used the carrier method. Immediately it was bad; Mowgli was chattering, puffing up, hissing, and wouldn’t let the others get anywhere near him. I carried on with the intro but quickly it turned aggressive and Mowgli initiated a three way rat ball; ending with Arlo and Buggie (who are best friends normally) boxing and squaring up to each other. Rat ball again, Arlo and Mowgli this time. I banged on the side of the cage, they stopped, no blood so I (perhaps wrongly) continued the intro. A bit of calm, sniffing, then rat ball again; I took Mowgli out, de-puffed him, continued. At this point Mowgli was becoming more aggressive and despite attempts at spraying water and swaying the cage, he ended up biting Arlo several times and drew blood and quite a nasty wound on Arlo’s back. I stopped the intro. Now I’m completely stumped. Mowgli has never met other rats and most rat things he’s been learning for the first time such as climbing, foraging, etc. They’ve been separated for a few days now and I just don’t know what my next move should be. Neutering Mowgli seems extreme now but I am wondering if it’s maybe for the best. Is there anything else I can do?

Honestly it’s very rare to take on an adult buck that’s been alone for a good length of time and not need to neuter him for him to settle happily with other males. This is because he’s not learned (or forgotten) the basic social skills that lets him interact with others. Combine this with the desire to be the boss of the cage and intros getting well out of hand is likely. Personally I would castrate him, it should help with him biting you too, give him a month afterwards to settle down a bit then try again. It can take up to 8 weeks though for hormones to fully settle down

@@IsamuRatCare thank you! i had friends tell me about the implant but i just think neutering long-term will be the best solution. he's a lovely guy and i hate seeing him by himself and i really just want him sorted in with my group asap. the vets are getting back to me tomorrow, fingers crossed for a quick and easy neutering with a good end result! x

It does sound like he’s had a bleed in the eye, they can do this from a bad bump or similar. Most of the time it’s harmless but keep an eye on it and if the eye starts swelling or the surface goes funny then more may need to be done
