This is wonderful content, thanks for sharing with us. Tip: I just tried this on 4 inch tiles. It does not work very well, because you don't get that nice feathering effect from the initial blues, because it runs up the edge of the tile. The edges of the blues become rounded and really pretty boring. I think you need a 6 inch tile for this to work so the ink and really spread out when you blast it with the air. Also, using a green pen to draw the background works great.

I am not doing online classes at this time, You aren't the first to ask. One reason is I am not very computer smart and I don't have any teenagers left at home to teach me, lol. I keep very busy doing classes in my studio, I like the in person approach. Maybe someday.... Meanwhile you can pm me on my fb art page with questions. (Jewel Rosemary Art on fb,) There are a few in the Fb ink groups that do teach on line classes. I have not taken them but you could ask in the group they will point you in the right direction.

Your tiles are really lovely! Once they are done and you seal them with clear coat or varnish, how do you hang them? Do you put cork on the back? I'm wondering how a picture hanger or other frame can be incorporated with the tiles to make them able to to be hung and displayed on a wall. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work and technique! :)

thanks! If you take a look at my framing tutorial you will see how I mount the tiles on Ikea mirror frames. You could also glue a little hook to the back of the tile. I think E6000 is what people use, though I have not tried it.

The dauber is a tool I use for getting a textured look with the ink. You can buy them or make them. I made some from stampers, I cut off the rubber stamp and glued on Velcro. I drop ink onto the felt which is attached to the Velcro. When I am done, the felt is discarded. You could also make one from a simple block of wood, it does not have to have the handle. Hope this makes sense.

You can ink on canvas if it has been protected with something that stops the ink from being absorbed, pouring medium or resin for example. I blow the inks with canned air (Costco has the best one) in my videos. At home in studio I usually use my small compressor. The main supplies you need are.....inks, blender, tile or yupo, air for blowing, a dabber with felt, qtips, alcohol for cleanup and removing ink, a liner brush. I love using the microbrushes but they are not in stores, you can order them on line. Rubber gloves and apron are handy as well.

Jewel have you ever tried to just wrap a little felt around your finger to create the same effect as the stamper tool?

I had not tried it till you mentioned it. Did not work well. A stamper gives better control. Easy to make one with a block of wood, some Velcro, glue, and a sheet of felt.

you can paint on anything non absorbent like plastic, glass, metal... My only reservation with place mats is that they would need constant cleaning. This would wear away the ink, even if it was sealed. Also it should not come in contact with food.

that is a dental mircro brush (or micro applicator brush). You can find them on ebay or amazon. If you know a dentist, that helps too. They are just a tiny plastic stick with a little felt tip. Just holds enough ink for detail work. I clean them with alcohol and re use.

Stephani B . Always the first sealant I use is Krylon Kamar spray. Most sealants have alcohol in them which moves the inks . Kamar seals it and protects from the others like the u.v. spray which is also important. 3 light sprays of each leaving a good few hours dry time between sprays.

Thank you for the video, I find I am unable to get the ink to go as far as I want it to, all I get is a thin line with lots of fingers. No fingers with the white just short and stubby.

Some inks are thicker than others, and make more fingers. The angle and direction of the straw in the can is important too, as well use of the trigger on the can. make sure your finger is at the very bottom of the trigger. The white Snowcap must be well shaken. Just keep playing!

Yes, I usually paint the edges with black acrylic . It gives a nice finished piece . I finish the tile with a sealant to protect it as well.

I do seal. It is not that the tiles would peel, but the inks need protection from handling and the sun. I use 3 sprays. The first is Krylon Kamar, from Walmart. The second Krylon U.V. archival varnish and the third I use to get some shine back is Rustoleum 2X gloss. (from hardware paint dept). 3 light coats of each, leaving several hours dry time between. This will protect the tiles. If the work is on Yupo paper, I still use the first 2, then frame under a matt and glass as you would a watercolor.

What size micro pen are you using?

I sell my tiles as art not coasters. I seal with Krylon Kamar spray first, then a U.V. spray to protect from fading. These sprays will dull the shine somewhat, so if you want some shine back, I use Rustoleum 2X Gloss spray. If using the tiles as a coaster, I will always use resin. There are several on line tutorials on how to resin.

Yes, I always seal my tiles so they are protected. I use 3, the first being Krylon Kamar. This is the most important one, It helps set the ink and protects it from any subsequent sprays that may affect the ink. Secondly I spray with a U.V. protectant and lastly if I want to get some shine back, I spray with Rustoleum 2X gloss. So that is 3 products, giving 3 light sprays of each one, leaving some good drying time between each spray. Never use a spray that contains alcohol. The tiles can still get scratched , so care is required. Don't stack them on each other. Hope this helps.

I seal my tiles with Krylon Kamar, 3 light sprays a few hours apart. You can find it in the crafts section at Walmart. Secondly I use a U.V. protection spray , same method. If you want to bring back some shine, a few coats of Rustoleum 2X clear gloss spray. This will protect the tile, but I recommend only a dry dust when cleaning them.

How would you finish the edges?

Hi Kay, I like to paint the edges with acrylic paint, usually black or white. Then I display on a little easel or mount on a finished board.

Jewel Buhay thank you for your prompt response. That is what I did. Also I made hot plates out of tiles. After I sealed them, I sprayed them with caliper spray used on car wheels. They were gifts and so far they are doing well. I advised people not to put a pan right off the fire on them, but to use the to protect table serf aces from hot dishes. I did put a pan from the fire onto the finished tile and nothing happened. Love your videos!

3 sealants. Krylon Kamar, Krylon gallery series U..V. archival varnish, and Rustoleum ultra cover 2X gloss. In that order. 3 light coats of each, leaving a few hours between each coat. That's 9 sprays. Do not use anything that has alcohol in it.

Jewel Buhay wonderful thanks for sharing. Your techniques are very similar to Enamel china painting. If you used that type of on-glaze then you could fire your tile in a kiln and they would be permanent.

I always like to use the brightest white tile I can find. It's the white of the tile coming through that gives those inks their luminescence. If the tile is more of a dull white that will affect the colour of the ink, they will not look as intense in colour. The tile does not have to be super glossy though, it can be less shiny and work just as well. I get my Tiles at Hardware departments such as in Home Depot or Lowe's Etc. I sometimes have good luck at the Habitat ReStore, you never know what you will find there. I also keep my eyes open at garage sales. Some carpet stores will carry tiles but they can be pretty expensive there.

That is enough ink, you shouldn't run out. I would recommend buying some Krylon Kamar spray to seal them after they cure.

@@island_jewel57 Jewel, Thank you for your tips and fabulous videos-Girls night was amazing! Everyone had a blast and a couple of us are hooked for sure! I have one questions that came up, I bought a dauber that came with felt pad attached and refills. When I use it, it leaves fibers in the paint everywhere it touches and is difficult to remove....have you had this problem? Is there a different type of felt or other product I should use (just using what cam with it)? I love the effect it makes.

You can get a very similar textured effect by crumpling up a small wad of wax paper and dabbing with that. If you are using felt, the first thing is I don't buy the precut stuff, it is pretty expensive. I get a sheet of felt from Michaels or the dollar store. Don't get the thicker one, it does not release the ink very well. You can make daubers with a small block of wood, glue on the Velcro with No more Nails glue. Or sometimes I will find stampers cheap at garage sales. I cut off the rubber stamp and glue on the Velcro. For unwanted fuzz, once the tile is dry you can remove most of it by pulling it off with masking tape that you have wrapped around your fingers. If I forget to do this and go ahead and do the sealants, then it can usually be wiped off with a dry microfiber cloth. I hope this answers your question.
