    Oh, loved this one! Nice save on the tree. The colours are subtly beautiful and the austerity of the scene is very tranquil.

    Your art is truly amazing! I agree with the others, that you can become a very successful on-line teacher. Your work is original, beautiful, clever, good mix of representational and intuitive, and your design and lay-outs pleasing to the eye. You made a monumental move (literally), but this is 2017 - ready for the next move with your art? Have you thought of larger pieces, or trio's or series? You have what it takes, ma'am.

    Thank you so much, this means a lot to someone who often struggles with confidence. (But I am getting there!) I have worked much larger in acrylics and mixed media. I have even done murals in schools and a restaurant....325 square feet! How is that for large? : ) I have not gone too large with tiles and ink because of the weight, but have done bigger pieces on Yupo. Tiles are still my fave though. I am loving my new place but have not painted as much just because I can't stay away from the ocean!!

  • @island_jewel57

    @island_jewel57

    5 жыл бұрын

    I don't show it in my videos but here is the process. I use 3 sealants. 1. 3 light sprays from a foot away with Krylon Kamar. You can find it in Walmart in the craft section. Leave a few hours dry time between each spray. 2. Krylon U.V. archival spray to protect from fading. Same directions. 3. If you want to bring back some shine, I use Rustoleum 2X gloss from the hardware store paint dept. There are many sealants and sprays out there, make sure they do not contain alcohol or your beautiful A.I. painting will be damaged or changed for good.

    +Juliana Leo Jewel, it would not be such a bad thing to start up a website, and Charge for your services. When you feel you've gotten the Expertise down to do that - I would PAY to have you teach. SO, IF THIS event ever happens...It is THEN I would recommend doing a better Visual Video. *** You could be making money from this - and I would highly applaud your efforts. Why NOT? I already pay for Classes through CRAFTY & another Online TEACHER. But I expect to get a good product and Visuals is part of it. Half a brain has nothing to do with it. Anyone can offer a video...but I think You have a Quality Product. And Since you asked...I am offering some insight as an Artist who also teaches. Here is question for my viewers. Do you mind seeing this work done upside down from your viewpoint, or would you prefer my camera person to film from behind me? Just trying to figure this stuff out, I am not very experienced and would like input.

    +Jewel Buhay birdseye is ideal, but that is tricky to do.. I dont mind upside down so long as you flip it or circle around on occasion, at least for more intricate designs. If your audience has even half a creative brain they can envision beyond what is in front of their nose and figure it out. who knows they may see something unintended and get even more creative! no worries, you're doing great!

  • @julianaleo631

    +Jewel Buhay I do think, that as your audience expands...so would your need to be an expert at Videos...it sorta goes with the territory. I purchase online videos a lot, and the ones that get my business offer Quality Viewing. Don't let the learning curve of video making challenge you - you've taken on bigger challenges and come through it with Honors. Creative brains can't be judged - IF you want to limit your audience, then just offer it to Creative folks... About 8% of society have the luxury of being creative... does that mean the rest of the world is creatively stupid? (dang, I hate math and no matter how hard I try, I always struggled with algebra, etc.) In other areas, I'm brilliant. So...as your world Opens Up, so will Your Audience...and the more you offer the Ease of Learning... Well, you know what I mean :-) right?

    I didn't even realize you were filming it upside down till I read your comment. However, right side up would be ideal. But it's very frustrating to me when the person's head ends up blocking the view, if even for just a short time.

    I dont mind looking upside down as I can clearly see everything you are doing. Your tutorials are the best on youtube. You are very clear on materials and what to do. Some people talk and talk and when they are done they really havent said anything if you know what I mean. You explain just enough. Very very interesting. I hope you continue them. Would love to see more.

    You have inspired me so much. I don't know if you are interested or have the time on maintaining a weekly video but you are one of the best I have seen on KZread and trust me I have seen them all. I for one would be really grateful if you did. What do you do with your finished pieces? Have you tried using your dental tool or q-tips to write quotes or greetings on your tiles? One last question what product do you suggest to seal them and the process of water proofing the tiles for coasters or even using as hot plates? Thanks again!!

  • @island_jewel57

    Thanks Dorraine. I have not thought about doing anything weekly, my videos are more in response to requests from the other artists in my facebook alcohol ink groups. If they ask to see certain paintings done in ink, then I do a video when I get the time. Super busy these days, as I have just move halfway across the country to Vancouver Island. I have not done quotes or greetings yet. My finished pieces get framed, with either Ikea Malma mirrors, (see my framing tutorial) or my own homemade frames. I then sell at art shows, or on my FB art page. To your question about sealing, I have a 3 step process. First sealant is Krylon Kamar spray. 2nd, Krylon Gallery Series, U.V. archival varnish. This is very important as the ink is dye based and could fade. As a final spray I have been using Rustoleum Ultra cover 2X gloss. I give 3 light coats of each of these sprays, waiting a few hours between each coat. So that is 9 coats total. If doing coasters, the only option I recommend is Kamar, U.V., and then resin. The resin is like a glass coat and very durable for washing up, but don't put in the dishwasher. I have not tried hot plates. I don't do coasters for sale as I can make better $$ framing and selling as art.

  • @island_jewel57

    Thanks Lovella. I use 3 sealants. 1st, Krylon Kamar Varnish spray, 2nd Krylon U.V. archival varnish spray. These 2 are important. If you want to bring back some of the shine, then I use Rustoleum 2X gloss for that. 3 light sprays of each, giving lots of dry time between. If you want to resin the tile, it should still get the Kamar coats.

    fabulous. I practically had this scene in my crazy creative brain already..and did similar coasters, and already bought a few skinny tiles. just wasnt going the snowy route.. but I love love love it! thx .. can you offer suggestions on sealing or firing it so its durable?

  • @island_jewel57

    @island_jewel57

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Holly W Willner Sometimes I resin, which is equal to 50 coats of varnish and is super shiny. If not I seal with Krylon Kamar spray as a base sealant. Then I follow with a U.V. spray and Rustoleum Ultra cover 2X clear gloss to finish and get back some of the shine. 3 light coats of each spray. Always make sure none of your sprays have an alcohol base, it will make your painting vanish before your eyes.

    Love it! Can alcohol be used in place of blending solution for everything? Thanks for posting your beautiful work!

  • @island_jewel57

    @island_jewel57

    +Melissa Edwards The blender is less harsh and the colors do a much better job of blending. Try both and you will see the difference. It is fine to use alcohol when misting droplets onto the tile for snow or stars. I always use the alcohol when cleaning my tile as I would not want to waste blender for cleaning.

    Have you ever tried using on a backsplash? Would I need a special sealer? How well would they old up to grout etc and the cleaners used in a kitchen? Love the black tile and I have a kitchen that is screaming for an update. Thank you.

    Thanks Deborah. I did recently do 3 tiles in a backsplash for a client who built a brand new house. They were placed in the wall above the stove, ( induction stove that does not throw heat) they were at least a couple feet above. I did several and she pick her 3 faves that matched her color theme. I used my 3 sealants and then gave them 2 coats of resin. I told her to make sure the tilers took care to cover them with painter tape when installing and grouting so they did not scratch. If you private message me on FB I can show you the pics.

    I could see you were using the gray to shade the trees but wasnt clear where the black was used or did you use it to shade them as well. ? Also, would you ever consider doing a video showing how you seal them with resin?

  • @island_jewel57

    @island_jewel57

    I used grey (Slate) for the shadowing on the trees, and black for the bark. I do seal some of my tiles with resin, it is a long and tedious process. There are videos on YT on how to resin and clear instructions on the packaging. I will say this, make sure you mix the 2 parts exactly 50/50 or it may never completely dry. Mix really well for 2 to 3 minutes. Make sure your surface is 100% level, or the resin may shift to one side. Tiles must be on a pedestal of some type. I use pill bottles and yogurt cups for tiles. I find a blow torch is best for getting out the bubbles. You can do more than one coat if the surface has flaws. Always use a mask, safety glasses, gloves, old clothes and good ventilation. Sometimes the resin will fade some of the ink colors even when I protect with sealant first.

    Scroll down to my reply 9 months ago, it explains sealing. The inks could fade with constant sun exposure, so I always coat with U.V. spray.

    If I didnt have slate gray and wanted to try this would a marker work? Also on one of your other videos of the birch trees you had a moon on it that you peeled away when you were all done to leave the white circle. What did you use to make that prior to adding your paints was it some kind of sticker?

  • @island_jewel57

    @island_jewel57

    If you have alcohol based markers, they would work. I have used Spectrum Noir alcohol ink markers occasionally. I used masking fluid to mask off my moon in the birch tree video. It is the same kind you would use in a watercolor painting. Windsor Newton has it, also Fineline has it in a maskfluid pen.
