    I seal first with Krylon Kamar , 3 light coats. This seals and protects the ink. You can find it at Walmart usually in the craft section. Then 3 light coats of UV archival to protect from the sun. These sprays will take out some of the glossy finish, so you can add some varnish if you want shine back. I mount my tiles and sell them or at art markets and shows.

    Oh wow, so, so pretty, and realistic, too! You've totally taken the mystery out of this technique for me, making me realize all I really need now is the white ink and spray air. Although you posted this several years ago, your wonderful tutorial keeps educating and inspiring! Thanks so much!

  • @island_jewel57

    @island_jewel57

    5 жыл бұрын

    That is my most common asked question. I seal firstly with Krylon Kamar , it protects the ink from other sealants. Secondly I use a U.V. spray to protect from the sun. If you want to get some shine back I use Rustoleum 2x Gloss. I do 3 coats of each, leaving a few hours dry time between each coat. If you want these tiles to be coasters, I use Kamar, and then resin them for durability.

    Hi, Jewel ... are those regular alcohol inks that you use? When applying one over another, the 2nd color doesn't remove the first? Your tile is beautiful!

  • @island_jewel57

    @island_jewel57

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! Yes these are regular alcohol inks, however the white (Snowcap) is much thicker than the other colors and does not allow them to penetrate as much if it is dry. That allows me to be able to add a small amount of the second color and hopefully it stays on top. It was just an experiment to see what works. The only way to get colors to work on a black tile is to add white beneath or on top of the color you want to show. Hope this makes sense.

    Jewel I bought the canned air and it spews and freezes my flowers. But I don’t see that happening to you?

  • @island_jewel57

    @island_jewel57

    5 жыл бұрын

    There are a few rules to using canned air. Normally I use a small compressor, but for teaching purposes I use the can. 1st and most importantly....never shake the can. You will see that on the instructions. This mixes the air with the chemical and the result won't be good. You might see a fine white powder come out, if you see this you know you are shaking it. Also don't overtip it. The same thing will happen. It helps to keep it off the table so you can get the straw closer without overtipping. 2nd.....don't over use it. The can will freeze up (even get frosty) if you use too much at a time. If the can is getting too cold, just let it rest and warm up. These tips should help. Some use a straw to blow the ink, but I get too breathless doing it that way. Also moisture builds up in the straw which the inks don't like. keep trying, don't give up!

    +Didee M I get Home Depot to cut my wood for me to the size I want. There are no carpenters in this house, lol. I like a margin of about 2" around the tile so I would get a 3x6" tile like this mounted on a piece of wood that is cut to 7x10". MDF works well. I sand the edges, give it a coat of primer with a small sponge roller, and then roll about 3 coats of paint, either white or black, or whatever color you want. Regular latex house paint works. I attach D hooks and wire to the back and then mount the tile with No More Nails glue. I have also sold this size tile set on a wooden mini easel.

  • @island_jewel57

    Yes, they must be sealed as handling will eventually smear the ink, also they can fade if not protected from the sun. My sealing formula is Krylon Kamar, Krylon U.V. protectant spray , then a final glossy spray such as Rustoleum 2 X gloss. 3 light coats of each, a few hours apart. That's 9 coats total. You could also use resin, but still need Kamar first .

    Jewel, I have tried your technique with the white cap on black tile. I am having some difficulty with keeping the white from doing odd things. First, it wants to spider web after I hit it with the air. I have shaken the bottle for minutes to ensure it's mixed. I have puffed the white mix very gently, moderately, and blasted it in frustration. The white does not remain smooth. Second, I thought it was the tile. So I cleansed it with 91% alcohol three times. Still the same issue. I decided to try painting over the dried white (still webbed looking) and it began to mix with the color, separate and bead. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I thought that maybe I was using too much white, so I used just one bottle drop, two bottle drops, and three bottle drops to compare - no change in the webbing or mixing. Any suggestions?

  • @johngo6283

    @johngo6283

    Judi, I think you might be correct on this. Different kinds of tiles have all different kinds of glazed services. Some are pretty much like a glass and some are more matte, which makes the ink flow in a much different manner.

  • @johngo6283

    @johngo6283

    Gerry, this might look like a subtle thing, but notice that she's hitting each drop of paint with a "double tap" from the air can. This is an important thing to note. A single blast can cause the ink to go everywhere, but 2 controlled short burst right after one another can help you control the ink better.

    No, I don't sell them, but they are not hard to make. Just trace outside of the frame onto a piece of cardboard or stiff paper, plastic etc....and cut it out. Trace the tile onto the center first doing careful measurements to make sure it is dead center. Cut it out but add about 1/8th " to the cut out so the tile can sit in with a bit of space and is not too tight.

    Do these need to be sealed after they are painted and what do you use to hang them?

    yes sealants are important for protection. I use Krylon Kamar as the base sealant. Then a U.V. protectant spray. You may add a 3rd varnish spray if you want to bring back some of the glossy finish. 3 light sprays of each, dry a couple hours inbetween spraying. Sometimes I resin instead of the final coat.

    For mounting I glue them to mdf board which I have cut at Home Depot. I prime it and paint it with a roller using house paint and then attach hanging wire. You could just glue a hook to the back of the tile with a really good glue like E6000.

    It is Adirondak Snow Cap. It is an alcohol ink mixative.

    I have used the Pinata White and it cracks. I have never had the Adirondack brand crack.

    hello! what you use for correct errors?

    If the error is not too terrible you can maybe keep working with the ink to correct it. If it can't be saved, just wipe off with alcohol and start over.

    why do you use canned air to dry it. a heat gun would be so much cheaper

    I am using the air to move the ink. It is the focused air that makes the petals form the way they do. I don't think a heat gun would give the same effects. Also it is really hot and I am sure the tile would warm up fast. Don't want to get burned. I do demos and teach with the canned air, but in my studio painting for myself, I use a compressor. Much cheaper in the long run.

    Makes sence. I bought some and i hate using it because it's so expensive. What I meant was to use it to dry the ink instead of air

    yes, I don't like to cost of the canned air either, the cheapest and best one is at Costco. But more than the price, I hate the chemicals that are in it. That's why I use my compressor when I can. Cheaper in the long run, and clean air.
