    Bookies put huge pressure on Spain as big odds on faves & the 3 🦁 love it. As underdogs they will play free like brave strong lions hunting spanish prey. I'm happy to win 1-0 with a late winner from worldy pass by Trent to Jude in the 90th minute & then hold on for dear life in the final 3 minutes of added time. But of it ends 2-2 AET & 3 🦁 win 5-4 on pens, that's fine too.

    I am a fan from Serbia, found the pod few months ago, now I can't stop listening to you guys. Amazing job! Regarding the penalty, I believe that it was a penalty 100%. I had the injury that came out of the same situation, where a guy blocked my volley follow through, broke my foot, and I was sidelined for 8 months. As you all gentleman know follow through helps you navigate the direction of the shot, so in that sense it affected the play. Imagine scenario Harry Kane getting his foot broken and being subbed because of that, but the penalty not being given because the defender could not have played it any better :D. Why do we even need the rules that support defensive plays so much, football is becoming more and more boring, managers and teams figured out how to defend efficiently against basically anything. I really believe that we need the rules to promote offense instead of supporting defense so that the game can once again become expressive and entertaining.

    100% agree. Getting a bit fed up with English people and pundits basically apologising for us getting a penalty we deserved to get (and had the Netherlands got the penalty, they'd be moaning about it even more I imagine). It was a foul, obvious to anyone who knows the fact that the rules of football aren't still the same as the 80s. I've really enjoyed this podcast, it's just been a touch spoiled by this on the last two episodes. The comment that "Kane followed through causing the contact" is just so off the mark. Go watch the highlights for the VAR incident and watch the movement of both players. Dumfries' foot is _still moving forward_ when he makes contact with Kane, and the connection occurs just a few frames after the ball is struck, with both players feet still both in motion - crucially, Dumfries is still moving towards Kane. He's not just "stood there , blocking the ball". He's attacking the ball, with his _studs up,_ but HE MISSED THE BALL AND KICKS KANE. It's irrelevant that Kane was also kicking, he strikes the ball. Dumfries missed the ball and was LATE. It's so clearly a foul, I've got no clue why anyone, particularly "experts", think otherwise. The fact is, the ref had all the time in the world to review it and thought it clear enough that he was willing to reverse his original decision. It was a penalty and it was deserved.

  • @TheFridge0x

Thumped by Germany 4-1 in the second round. 2012 - 4 games, 2 wins v Sweden and Ukraine. Out to Italy on pens in the QF (4th match) 2014 - 3 games, ZERO wins, out in the group stages 2016 - 4 games, 1 win v Wales. Lost to Iceland in the second round. That is 15 games - 4 wins . Over FIVE tournaments. Contrast that with Southgate's FOUR tournaments: 2018 - 7 games, 4 wins - lost to Croatia in the SF 2021 - 7 games, 5 wins - lost on pens in the FINAL 2022 - 5 games, 3 wins - lost to France in the QF 2024 - 7 games - so far 4 wins - reached another FINAL. That is 26 games, 16 wins - in one fewer tournament. Goals scored by England in four tournaments 2010-2016: 14 Goals scored by England in four tournaments 2018-2024: 43

    Indeed. Feelings not matching evidence is hardly a new human experience or unique to sport. There's also the tendency for people to worry and moan about things in equal amounts whatever their situation. The only things that change are the things that people worry and moan about. Hence, "we don't go deep into tournaments" has become "We're not great to watch" or "we should be much better than this with the players we've got."

    I am Spanish and when I was a teenager I remember bitterly the quarter-final match of the Euro 1996 against England, which we lost on penalties (Rafael Nadal’s uncle missed a penalty). Alan and Southgate played on that England team. I hope that on Sunday the result will be different and Spain will win, but we must recognize the merit of this team from Southgate that has always been fighting for the titles in recent years. Individually I think England is better, but collectively is Spain. We will see who wins, although I hope a great final.

    I'm sure it has been said many times in the comments: penalty decision - studs up...high foot... if that happens anywhere else on the pitch - the ref blows whistle for a foul and likely whips out a yellow card. (say whip again...) cool whip.. anyway... It was 'fortunate' that VAR got involved but that isn't luck... that is the correct decision. Bish bash bosh. We had the momentum, Netherlands on the back foot... We deserved that win 100%. Great stuff. Just wish Southgate would give opposition a proper headache down the left side with Gordon. Must've been Gareth's e-bike that he broke......? Great show guys - howay the lads...!

    If that foul on Kane happened at pitch level, studs showing, no way would anyone say that’s not a penalty. It was. But because it’s in the air it’s different? Why?

  • @StealthBoyElite

    @StealthBoyElite

    Ай бұрын

    Yeh, baffling that so many pundits are so certain it wasn't a penalty. The ref got to look at it as much as he needed and decided it was a foul based on the rules of the game, meaning he was so certain he felt it was enough to _reverse_ his original decision. It's _clearly_ a foul. Not up for debate. This kind of foul is given all the time, all over the pitch; he's late, he didn't get the ball before Kane did, contact was made AND his studs were showing! How is that "never a foul"? The concept that "Kane's follow through is the reason for contact" is nonsense. Dumfries put his boot up. If he doesn't, there's no connection. It's not like Kane kicked him on his standing foot, is it? Kane struck the ball, not showing studs, got there first and has a right to do this without someone shoving their studs up in the way of his strike. The reason this irritates me so much is it takes shine off of England's win, which was 100% deserved, _including the penalty._ Keane's argument was even worse. He even conceded that it would be a foul outside of the area but not in and his argument is the outcome (penalty, not free kick, stakes are "too high"). Utter nonsense. Dumfries took a risk and failed. His punishment was a penalty that Kane still had to put away for it to count anyway. Well deserved goal.

    It’s a clear penalty that’s why VAR flagged it. Ref saw in slow motion and realised the offence. The exact scenario is in the laws. It’s afoul anywhere else and the pitch and it is clear on the laws that if it occurs in the box it’s a penalty. If Dumfries got to the ball first there wouldn’t have been an offence.

    Not taking away from Watkins but I feel like the reason it worked so well is because of how different he plays to kane. So after 80 mins of conditioning their defence to play a certain way marking kane. The formation drastically changed with Palmer and Watkins and it opened them right up creating an opportunity that Watkins had the talent to capitalise on perfectly. I don't think it would work as well for a full 90 mins. These late substitutions are working wonders imo.

    Do you think it would possibly work better against Spain? They were cut open quite a few times on the counter in their games running behind their lines and keeping them pinned back might disrupt them more. If Kane keeps dropping into midfield and no one up front then it’s just inviting Spain to run rings around us.

    @@01bigtrev I feel like you have to adapt to the way they are playing. Although you can't be too defensive otherwise the assault is just relentless like we saw in Spain's match against Georgia. They sat back and they were having to fend them off every couple of mins. It's definitely going to be a tough game. I just hope they can settle the game down and prevent Spain getting an early goal. Then maybe they can make something happen from there. I wonder if we'll keep the 3 - 4 - 2 - 1 formation we used against the Netherlands. It did help us push up the field in the first half.

They still have to play well and get on together with no tribalism (something they had in past). Also tournaments have a lot of randomness to them and don't care about history or rankings. It's all about a POINT IN TIME. Would I have wanted England to be in a group with Saudi and Moroco last world cup? Before maybe yes, but in hindsight no thanks! Proves all games are difficult and nobody has a devine right. Those lesser teams are just as dangerous as they come as with huge will to win and are often underestimated, making them basically just as difficult.
