Those boots have no protection for the top of the foot and Dumphries came in with the studs up. He kicked right into the bottom of Dumphries boots and possibly into a stud. It probably hurt like hell. Not saying it was a penalty but it most likely really hurt. You ever crash on a bike or a skateboard and hit a part of your body real hard? It hurts when it happens but you walk it off and move along. You're not injured but it does hurt. I really don't think that Kane was faking that it was painful. Still don't think it was a penalty unless the problem is that Dumphries' studs were up.

Well the penalty - Rules set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) The rule states: “It is committed with an opponent nearby and prevents the opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury. “Playing in a dangerous manner involves no physical contact between the players. If there is physical contact, the action becomes an offence punishable with a direct free kick or PENALTY KICK.” “In the case of physical contact, the referee should carefully consider the high probability that misconduct has also been committed.” .....don't hate the player hate the game lol

So given the rules that you stated out. The defensive player put his leg out to block a shot. His foot did not go towards the attacker. It was at arm's length and only hit on the follow-through of the attacker. The attacker shot the ball. The ball then went out of play and on the follow-through hit the defender who was a safe distance away and no misconduct was made. Given the rules, this was not a penalty. The on field decision was no penalty and should not have been called to VAR in the first place because there was no clear and obvious error to overturn it. In fact, upon review, they should have seen that Saka hand move the bowl in the direction of Kane.

@@user-xh4bw2zc4g I'm confused. A defender is supposed to make a attacking player 's day difficult. There's no problem there. The problem is I did he have any misconduct? Clear-cut? Dumfries didn't move his foot towards Kane on the shot proven because Kane got his shot off. He is in front of Kane and his only option to stop a shot is to put a foot up. With something as subjective as a follow-through that should not be taken into account because different players have different techniques. That is a coming together as it would usually be called in different circumstances. It has happened before. Ask anyone who has actually played football. This is not a penalty. There's no mental gymnastics, simple facts. Former players, pundits, referee analyst, and coaches have said the same. You didn't offer any argument to say it was a foul, you said was that he made it difficult for Kane which is his job.

If Dumfries hadn’t put his foot there Kane may have reacted differently to hitting the ball and might have actually scored. If that had been an outside the box decision it would have been a certain foul and you know it. However, we can’t allow subjective refereeing to creep in. For a start the refs have too much to deal with and they can’t process enough information to constantly be weighing up the ‘what if’s’ of every situation in a game. I think there were more odd moments not in our favor like: handball saka in the build up to that penalty, judo tackle by rice on ake in English box, yellow for van dijk when being correct and speaking to ref as a captain, and of course how the Dutch attack was cancelled by the ref unfairly (Gakpo taking the ball from Mainoo) and thereby allowing the English to set up the match deciding attack. Quite clearly this is ridiculous and rules are there to stop dangerous play otherwise players would be getting seriously injured every week.

The fool on the phone is wrong. The rules clearly state going into a tackle with raised studs means the player in not in control and can result a red card. If this was not a foul, every player could leave their foot hanging, studs showing. The rules say nothing about "inside the penalty area means different".

Very strange that a tackle with studs up is not a foul. When outside the box raising your foot when a player kicks the ball is always a foul not even studs up, and sometimes a yellow card! How can it not be an obvious mistake when he didn’t see it- if he had seen it he would have booked him as he did with the replay!

I will start by saying I don't think it was a penalty but, it was clearly thought by VAR that the position of the defender's boot was reckless and indeed, refs give fouls there outside of the area regularly. I think maybe there needs a clarification. It is not good enough for Gallagher to say it is fine for it to be a foul outside but not inside the area. That is not satisfying. I didn't think the Germany pen against Denmark was a penalty in terms of it didn't feel like one, but I understand why it was according the the laws of the game.

I don't get the argument being made. How can it be a foul anywhere else on the pitch but not a foul in the box? Dumfries came down with a stamping motion with his studs angled down in a way that could have severely injured a player. He did not mean any harm but fouls aren't given based on intent.

When the ref doesn't give it, it goes for review, and then he gets called over-it's always going to be a penalty. As soon as this situation happens, the VAR team engages in sub-conscious coercion to the referee to convince him to award a different decision. No doubt the types of players involved will certainly influence the decision as well - i.e. would the same award have been given if it had been Trippier and not Kane? Like Dermot said, never a penalty. The very easy lotto draw keeps rolling for England, both for games played and decisions given.

By saying this was not a penalty you're applying selective criteria of the incident. Free kicks are given for this type of challenge all over the pitch, the rules are if it happens in the box a penalty is awarded. If we start being selective about awarding a free kick where would it end. The challenge was high nowhere near the ball and studs up.

I would ask Dermot to put his honest head on and ask himself if during a premier league match James Tarkowski performs that challenge on a City player at the Etihad would he or any other ref still say nothing to answer here? it's a fine challenge. I would say any team in the relegation battle playing one of the top four know fully well they are going to get some sort of issue raising their studs like that to a forward. A Wolves or Everton doing what Netherlands did would be looking at a possible sending off for the defender or a pen, maybe both.
