Javier knew how to spell that one word that starts with the letter R, but the reason why he was stalling the judges was because he was waiting for Akeelah to return. He didn't want her to be disqualified. What a good friend.

"At least she's doing something educational and she's not lying about doing anything bad" Akeelah's mom is upset because 1) She lied in general and her mom only found out that she was still doing spelling bees because a total stranger called her and asked her if she needed a ride to USC and she didn't even know why and 2) she was wanted Akeelah to prioritize summer school over the bees. Then again, that part is partially the mom's fault because Akeelah could've told her that the time she spent training was essentially her summer school but every time Akeelah brought it up, she didn't wanna hear it.

Yeah I understood both sides when I watched this repeatedly throughout the years. Akeelah WAS only 11 and her other two kids were already stressing her out...but again....atleast she wasn't doing some crazy stuff.

This movie proves the immortality of Angela Bassett. Laurence Fishburne has aged quite a bit since Boyz n The Hood while Bassett looks just about the same.

To cut her some slack, she was upset that her daughter went behind her back and lied, though I get what you mean. Shutting her kid down when she wanted to talk about the bee was hardly the best way to handle things communication wise. At least she gave her a chance to prove herself. She only just found out her kid was in some out of town spelling bee when she previously beloved she was elsewhere. A lesser parent wouldn’t bat an eye, but she wanted to teach her child a lesson in responsibility and honesty.

At least at the end Akeelah's mom let Akeelah to participate in the competition
