The one thing that Mrs. Anderson needed in this scene was a good smack upside the head. Throughout the entire first half of the movie, all she did was harp on Akeelah about grades and doing what she was told. Not once did she actually listen to what her child had to say or even encourage her when she found something she was good at. To me, she's not being a parent. All she's being is a stone-hearted witch that needs a serious reality check.

Same with me I’m glad that my mom took me to the movies to see it when I was 10 when I was in 4th grade in 2006 before I was in 5th grade We still are watching it as mother and daughter She bought it on DVD my 11th birthday from Hollywood Video Store after we left my birthday dinner with my older brother and sister from Chili’s

I know I remember that, but what was a little frustrating in the beginning is anytime akeelah tried to talk to her mother about it she would cut her off and tell her later, or not now, or whatever so if a tequila didn't feel like she could talk to her mother then Mom kind of help bring that on herself too.​@@jeffreywilliams8499

Y’all got to understand that Akeelah’s Mother wasn’t upset about the Spelling bee, she was upset that she went behind her back and lied to to her when she never lied to her mother! Plus she signed her late Father’s signature without her knowing! That’s why she was upset which is understandable. If I was her Mother, I wouldn’t have let her do it just for that
