I respect Dylan in this scene. His dad just wants him to win this thing, but winning is not enough for him if she just gives it to him.. He wants to know they both gave their all and the win is truly earned. He showed her in this moment that he respects her enough as his competition to play with honor.

The lady reading them the words looks so proud
One of my favorite movies from beginning to the end, L-O-V-E.
Judges: we are literally out of words….
These are my favorite parts in this video: Dylan and Akeelah doing a high-five(1:55) and Dylan smiling at Akeelah and clapping for her after she spelled another word right(2:30). Akeelah is only 11 years old and in the 7th grade. She goes to Crenshaw Middle School. Dylan is only 14 years old(3 years older than Akeelah) and in the 8th grade, but he goes to a different school. Those 2 kids became friends at the end of the movie. Akeelah now has 3 best friends: Georgia(her old friend), Javier and Dylan(her new friends).

(This is a shout to the void, you needn’t read or reply, just need to get this off my chest.) 4th grade…I was the best speller in my class, read tons of books, and was considered eloquent among my peers. I knew every word and how they were spelled in the competition that year…except the damned, 4-letter word I never heard of in my entire life, which lost me the competition. The word, was “spur”. As in, what a cowboy wears on his boots. Panicked, ignorant, and shocked to hear a such simple short word I never heard before…instead of guessing, I spelled another word. I got 5th place, to top it off, to a girl who bullied me at school. My parents were shocked, but never admonished me or said I could have gotten it…even already had a giant pan cookie waiting for me with my name on it at home. I don’t know how they restrained themselves so perfectly, but I owed them so much for their composure. It’s been more than 2 decades, and I still am tearing myself up over how incredibly stupid I was, and I know I haven’t gotten over it. I even wonder how my confidence could have been boosted as a teenager, or even as an adult, because it would have been one less public, humiliating failure in my life. It’s haunting..and I wish I could leave it alone.
wow akeelah

Your. Good
Holy crap when I watched this for the first time I started to get disappointed cause I thought they were gonna go the generic “main character lets the other person win to show that winning isn’t everything”. But instead they won together in the most creative way possible: turn it into a contest to see if the 2 of them together can beat the JUDGES. Like the spelling bee version of that kid who beat Tetris by just playing the game long enough that it broke itself by having to go too fast Also, that one judge lady (the one at 1:32) always creeped me the hell out lol. She just really gives “nice on the outside, mean on the inside” vibes and idk why😂😂
This Chinese guy also from karate kids movie
first I love the movie and appreciate it

I wish more dads like dylans existed, I never had someone like that. Life doesnt give a shit about those who are babied. I love akeelah and her story and her coach but life is like this.
@Jays6926

But his dad can cause generational trauma and his father is not someone to look up to. Push your children to do their very best; but have them live their own dream and not yours. His dad was almost crying because he saw himself winning.There’s a difference between Akeelah and her community celebrating and Dylan. They helped her against all odds; while his father pushed him.
@gigggiii

You said yourself you never had someone in your life like that so you obviously wouldn't know how draining it is to have someone live their life through you because they failed miserably at theirs. If you want to succeed in life, babied or not, you will because it's all in your hands at the end of the day.
