@@mh-nc1bg No. In my high school, if you decided to cut class, you could open the door to go out but can't open it to get back in, lots of doors do that in school.

I feel sorry for that boy because he looked really uncomfortable on stage and his mother probably forced him to do the spelling bee. He did the right thing by admitting that he didn’t know the word. Also, that lady knew she was caught once the judge asked her if she helped her son spell the word and when she stood up and argued with him she pretty much showed that she was guilty.

If you look @0:12 everyone including the audience was distracted by the baby. Yes, that's what babies do, but spelling bees are suppose to be silent. How can you hear what the judges & participants while a baby is crying loudly?

I’m glad the boy was honest and said he didn’t know how to spell it, his mom was such a Karen 😂 and Akeelah’s sister had me cracking up 😭 “That boy’s momma helped him out, she was sayin ggggg” the way she extended her neck out when she said that 😂😂

Waste of time in the past 30 years or so? No. Waste of time in the past 5-8 years? Absolutely. Children have no need to learn these words besides for competition or sport. If the child wants to compete and spell, the child should be allowed. However, they shouldn’t be treated as some measure of value or used to prove another child to be “superior”

I was in a spelling bee in 2018 and 2019. I won two spelling bees in both second place. My first one was at Central Park Middle School, my second was at Paige Elementary School, and my third one was at Proctors Theatre. I didn't get to win, but it isn't because I spelled a word wrong, it is because I didn't get chosen for the second round. The words I spelled wrong in my first 2 spelling bees are ligatures, and nicety, yet I still won second place in both spelling bees.

My mom had this on DVD when blu day was still around.

I doubt it. The mom never once denied what she was accused of and essentially admitted to giving him the letter, and saying "He knew the word anyway" doesn't justify what she did. They still wouldn't have allowed that to fly.

In this video, Akeelah misspelled a word and almost didn't make it to the regional spelling bee. Luckly, she was given a second chance because one of the opponents was caught cheating. It was the boy wearing black. His number was 64. His mom mouthed the letter G and Kiana(Akeelah's sister)saw her doing it. She told the judge that the boy's mom helped him spell the word. The judge was not happy with the boy's mom. He told her that helping her son spell the word was serious business. If the boy was caught cheating, Akeelah would not have made it to the regional spelling bee.
