This scene shows that Derrick T might be a “thug” to the community, but he’s still good at heart

Indeed.
"What you think rap is?" Im proud someone knows.
Growing up in the projects I can say there were definitely guys like this. Ngl lot of shitheads who are nothing but trouble. But some good ones too with a decent heart. A few of the guys in the gang used to help me with my math homework as a kid. It was funny af when they’d have no idea how to solve a problem then end up arguing with eachother meanwhile I’m just sitting there waiting 😂 One of them helped with my English class. Back in school he wanted to be a creative writer but got trapped in his drug habits. I’ve noticed that some of them wanted me to succeed in the way they couldn’t instead of ending up stuck there too

I feel like the community was really proud because she was all over the news for doing something many people don’t get recognized for in their community. Everyone knew and they wanted to help her succeed. Because if she succeeds then they succeed
Derrick T deserves my respect as a do from the streets
I saw this movie in my first year of junior high in 2007. One of the best years of my life. It’s one of those movies that touches your soul.

That's why you don't give up or quit. The race ain't over til it's over, and to have so many people helping, believing in you you draw from that and with your faith in the Lord, there is NOTHING you can't do.

From what I researched, it's by Stephanie Jones titled "Day by Day" - if it's hard to find it means the song was created just for the film only.
