I agree. Even Derrick T who is painted by the Mom as this bad boy who shouldn't be trusted was kind enough to Akeelah that he made her brother help her study her words, rather than hang out with him...and during the montage of coaches, we even see Derrick helping Akeelah, himself, with the words, right along with her Mom and siblings and the rest of the community. He was also one of the people watching her and cheering her on from home. I just wonder if he kept his promise to her and let Akeelah read his prize winning poem, since she kept her part of the bargain and won the Bee.

Haven’t seen this movie since 2007. I remember the brother being taller and I didn’t think this scene was cringe
