Actually GAME CHANGING!!?? -FINAL REVIEW - Free Night Planetary Freecoaster

Almost a year ago the Free Night Planetary freecoaster appeared on the radar in BMX. With that came a lot of skepticism and doubts about not only whether or not it would actually work the way it was supposed to, but also if it could even hold up to the abuse of BMX riding.
I got my hands on one of these hubs and immediately began to put it to the test; allowing anyone and everyone to ride it, engage it, and even attempt tricks on it that are not supposed to work.
Playlist here - • Game Changing Freecoas...
In that time, I fell in love with the hub and have been riding it ever since.
In this video I talk about whether or not this hub is actually game changing and break down all of the different nuances about it in hopes of helping you decide whether or not you should buy one.

    The interesting thing is, Scooter Don and I actually invented this back in 2001. The design was shelved for a really long time (freecoasters weren't cool back then). I rode the prototype we built for almost a year before it broke. We didn't use a planetary set for the release mech. Our design auto disengaged and had infinite slack adjustment. Thanks for showing the guts!!!! Looks like a solid product

    I don't think I ever updated you on it but after my axle bent back in December, I contacted both Tal and eastern about replacement axles. I was told by Tal the replacements would still be the same inner diameter, but that they had ordered some sturdier ones that would be some months out. Talking to Robbie Taylor at Eastern, he was able to get me compatible replacements once I gave him the measurements of the freenight axle and they would cost me less in total because they were shopping domestically. Because of their stock at the time, he had to pull them from built hubs, but was able to get me two of them just in case I had another one bend. Fortunately, the ones that came in were a smaller inner diameter, taking a 6mm allen, instead of an 8mm. I'm still on the same axle and it seems extremely strong. I don't know if I'll ever actually end up needing the second axle. Over the time I've had it, and only since replacing the axle, I have had the problem of it not wanting to engage forward a few times. Every time it was because of the cone nut on the drive side being loose. Since I didn't use a bearing press, I think the problem is that my bearing on the drive side still isn't pushed in all the way. Besides that, I sometimes have an issue with it engaging the cassette unintentionally but it's typically because of my crank movements being sloppy or inconsistent. The only wear I've seen on the hub is the corners on all three of the points that engage the driver being rounded, but as long as my cone nuts are tight, this is not a problem and it still works as well as it did back in September when I first got it. Even though it's the only coaster hub I've ever had, based on riding other people's bikes, I still think it's the best one out there and I'm glad I got it. An interesting side-note, I was told by Eastern that apparently the reason this hub and the salt plus equivalent are allowed to exist is because there was a period before Eastern took ownership of the Ezra hubs when parents weren't settled and so other companies were able to copy or work off the Ezra design. I'm glad that happened because the freenight seems to be a much better design than the Ezra.

    Thanks for going really in depth and long term with this. I ended up going for the BSD Revolution over a cassette because of your videos. Awesome to know these things are consistent and durable. The pedal pressure is maintained if you pedal forward and hold the pressure before you tap, but I’m gunna make some pawl springs from spring steel and slip them under the pawls so it works as a cassette if I really want it. Take ‘er easy!

    Can confirm! Best freecoster ever only thing I can comment and would love feedback on is when I go from coasting while cruising forward and try to torque down to take off I get a little (very occasional) skip like the slack you would get from a freecoster just with extra noises. Its maybe less than an 1/8 a crank of skip anyone else ever experience this? Brant? I'm thinking that it's just the clutch not being totally engaged the sound is what makes me cringe really plus going to pedal and suddenly having no pressure is super rad.

    I'm not sure if you ever figured it out but in the one video you had pedal pressure for a tail tap. My guess is you have to start pedaling down just before the wheel touches and starts going backward. If you start applying pressure while the wheel is still spinning forward the cassette should lock in. I'm thinking of getting the free night one since BSD is on major back order

    Many thanks for this in-depth review!!! I think I will go for it on my dirt jumper! (Bit nervous because it's not a cheap piece of kit!) The ratchet seems to have 24 or so teeth? Freenight's website says it has NO slack but that doesn't mean that it engages instantly like some MTB hubs would, correct? For example if your ratchet has 24 teeth, your hub only engages every 360 / 24 = 15 degrees, unlike an Onyx BMX or MTB hub which actually engages instantly.

  • @Brant_Moore

    @Brant_Moore

    Жыл бұрын

    It's definitely not instant in those terms but it's instant in comparison to a traditional freecoaster. It's something you will notice if you're switching from a hub like that but it's not something that realllllly affects riding the bike and is very easy to get used to

    I have the hub and I'm pretty bad about accidentally engaging it in fakie when I lose my balance. I do it at least once almost every session pretty hard and I ride for hours 3-4 days a week and have had it since September. I've seen a little more wear on the corners where Brant showed some wear but it's been like that a long time already now and it's still working perfectly as long as my cone nuts are tight. I'd expect more wear on the teeth inside the hub or on the pawls, but I don't even see that. I took a chance on it after only seeing the first few videos from Brant and I'm glad I did. Zero regrets. I will say though that if you're looking for a loud cassette sound, this one isn't quite as loud as a normal one, having only 3 pawls. One of Brant's videos does a comparison on the sound.

    i dont have to back pedal my free coaster. just pedal right into whatever and 180 it. dont even have to think twice. so id say no, this isnt a game changer. my 4 year old primo does the same thing (ish).

    Either way you still have slack to get rid of when you pedal it again and you don't have that with this hub.

    @@Brant_Moore yeah for sure. i call it anti theft. imagine someone trying to quickly steal a bike and have no idea about the slack lol. i dont know if i care enough about pedal pressure to switch. id have to ride one 1st and see how it felt.
