    Any peat-based potting soil with lots of added perlite and bark chunks so that it is loose and airy would work fine.

    I can’t take all the credit. Many of the big box stores around here a few years ago used to sell these full-size plants for around $12 a pot. Now you can’t even buy a single leaf for that price.

    Hey just wanted to say thanks for all of the Hoya videos and extremely helpful info on your website. I am slowly developing a fondness for Hoyas, so learning as much as I can is paramount. Currently starting off with some cuttings of h. Kerrii and carnosa compacta. Do you have any advice on locations to purchase cuttings/plants from? Thanks again!

    Thank you for the kind comment! Some small starter Hoyas can be purchased online at Logees, and the Violet Barn. Gardinos is good for slightly larger plants. Ebay is a good place to purchase many different Hoyas from hobbyists and some other commercial growers. Until you get more experienced I don't recommend the overseas dealers as there is always a big risk when ordering from places like Thailand. Hope this helps! Doug

    Hi Doug great video. I have ordered a Polyneura and can't wait to receive it. Just wondering if you always let this plant completely dry out between watering or do you keep soil more on the moist side in the growing season?

    I kept it moister during the growing season. This was never a plant that I could keep happy long term. It always suffered during the long winter months. I wish you great success with your plant Caroline!

    Hi Doug, I was wondering if you had any tips for propagation from cuttings? A friend has a large plant that needs a trim (also I’m in the Southern Hemisphere so it’s early spring) I’m guessing my options are soil propagating, semi hydro or just water? And do you use any rooting hormone? Cheers, Jon

  • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

    @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jon, Truth be told, I don't think that I have ever propagated this particular Hoya before as I have been able to buy substantial plants for very little money. I would try water rooting first as I have had very good luck with that on 95% of everything that I have tried it on. I add a couple of drops of a product called KLN Concentrate, which has some hormone in it. I would also think that it would readily root in soil especially in your neck of the woods - Cheers, Doug

    You really like the cool growing species that I have always struggled with. Hoya polyneura prefers high humidity, and temperatures that are a little bit cool with bright filtered sunshine. I was never able to keep this one happy in the long term. I always grew it in soil in the past, but perhaps in would like my current medium of coir chips better. I think I always lost them to root rot in the past.

  • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

    @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

    2 жыл бұрын

    EA stands for Exotic Angel Houseplants which are put out by Costa Farms in Florida. They supply houseplants to thousands of big box stores across the country. They use a very water retentive soil comprised mostly of peat or coir. No one knows for sure what they use as it may be proprietary.

I feel that when you buy a hoya, has already many years on That plastic pot anyways and is time to repot!? Am correct!? Please advise.. i thank you in advance.

    First most people avoid terracotta pots for Hoyas as they dry out the sides of the roots too much. I like the looks of them but have never had good luck with terracotta. When I repot, I always move up to a slightly larger pot.

    A couple of years ago you could not give this plant away on eBay; now it going for that kind of money! Hoya polyneura is not the easiest plant to keep happy. It does not like to be hot and dry. It would love cool and humid, which is not the easiest condition to supply. My plant always did best outside during the summer and I would have to nurse it through the winter indoors. I hate to say it, but three years ago you could buy a full hanging basket of the plant for $13 at Home Depot and Lowes, but the supplier no longer grows it.

    Good question, this plant used to be available at most of the big box stores. A basket would sell for about $15; now a two leaf cutting costs close to $50. It is ridiculous, but I guess that is the law of supply and demand. I don't keep the plant any longer myself as it is quite fussy.

    I can’t find it anywhere besides very tiny two or three leaf rooted cuttings for sale online. Nobody is selling them on eBay or Etsy either, just Facebook plant groups. Why did growers stop selling them?

  • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

    @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

    4 жыл бұрын

    I wish I knew the answer to that question. You didn't used to be able to give this plant away as there were so many of them, now tiny cuttings are going for crazy prices. I believe the reason that the big growers don't mess with Hoyas much is because they grow too slowly, and require more specialized care than other plants that they can turn around much quicker.
