Thank you Anita. Since I made that video, Hoya curtisii has flowered once a year, and many times it was as the days began to lengthen in February and March. I think more than anything this is a plant that needs to get some age on it before it will flower - at least 3 or 4 years.

I'm a fan of hoyas, and would love to have more of them. But I live up in Northwestern Quebec, in Canada. I have had an hoya carmosa for at least 20 years and it hasn't bloomed in the last 5 years probably because I keep my room too cold as I just cannot stand the heat. Also, as I've just learned watching many of your videos today, I've never used the right kind of soil although they did flower until 5 years ago. I've just repoted them 2daýs ago. Into 2 huge containers with about 10 pounds of sand at the botton for drainage and 8 pounds of potting soil on top. That is in each container. From what I've just learned, my hoyas are going to be busy making roots and little else, lol but I don't really mind as I have such an abundance of beautiful foliage. And cannot bear throwing away live plant cuttings. I've given a lot away over the years though otherwise I'd be smothered in them, lol.

I get lots of beautiful foliage, just no more flowers, 😥😥 . Some things you just can't change. I can't even put them outdoors since I repotted then in 2 huge storage bins, so they're too heavy to move. My mistake, lol. I'm thinking of buying artificial lights from Amazon, but don't know wich ones would be best.

I’m not sure if you even still check this videos notifications but I came just across this video searching for Hoya curtisii blooms after mine bloomed and wanted to know how some else would describe the smell. Like a very fresh citrusy perfume! I bought mine at a Home Depot maybe late 2019 and it’s been in both a west and east window. It stayed without any progress in a west window for months and months and wanted that window for something else so I put it in an easy window and really neglected it. You’re right it likes to really dry out but bright sun doesn’t necessarily matter. What I did notice was after using super thrive and liqui-dirt fertilizer peduncles literally popped out everywhere!! I now have gotten my Hoya krinkle 8 also in an east window to have its first peduncle and my Hoya Retusa bloomed after only having it since February which was a cutting! Try liqui-dirt on your Hoya’s. I think you’ll be amazed at how fast they’ll bloom!!

Many growers, myself included, have had bad luck long term with sphagnum left on the roots. I have not tried it with curtisii in particular though so it is up to you whether to leave it or not. You need a well draining mix with aeration for curtisii that is only watered well when dry. You could try 50 percent perlite and 50% high quality peat-based potting mix. Curtisii needs a warm humid environment to grow well. Good luck!

I feel like this plant is misunderstood, because it can function like a string plant, in relativey generic soil designed only to drain well. However, I think this Southeast Asian wax plant has a lot in common with the Peperomia family fo succulents from Peru (infamous terrarium plants). Nobody EVER reccomends putting a hoya in a terrarium, but the slow growth habit of this plant and it's epiphitic nature, means that I can add a fistful of lava rock and bark to the top of an incline of slopped soil, with moss going all the way down the soil and a compact type hoya at the top of the slope in pure rock and bark. So long as I design my terrarium to hold the hoya's roots out of direct water, it can withstand a surprising amount of humidty on the part of the plant that is above the soil, and the glass amplifies the light on the leaves in a way that seems to keep the plant alive but growing in that classically slow way that hoyas grow. I just plan to propogate it heavily if it ever has a growth spurt (why would it, if it's not in direct sunlight ever?). The rules say no, but my experience says yes...hoyas are the most beautiful thing I have worked with in a terrarium, honestly, but it's a radical move, I admit, requiring that a terrarium be set up with a lot of thought about the hoya's native environment.

Done right with a carefully selected choice of plants, Hoyas would do tremendously well grown in a terrarium. The only problem that I can foresee is that most of them might do too well and quickly overrun the container. Please report back with your use of Hoyas in the terrarium, as I find it fascinating!

@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Oh my gosh, I too am really facinated about how in the world I have a Curtisii and a Wayetti both together in a terrarium that is maybe 1gallon big. I placed them in there thinking I could just aggressively propogate them, because it's an odd candy-dish shape, raised off the table with a stem, so it is an ideal set-up to eventually just take the lid off and let the plants trail, if I can't keep it cut fast enough.

  • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

If you are trying to get cuttings of curtisii to root, you need warm and humid with indirect light. The plant wants to thoroughly dry out before watering. Fully established plants can take full sun. These things will almost grow too fast given ideal conditions. I have a plant that has tripled in size since April in my grow tent. Humidity is the most important element in growing curtisii. If your soil is soaked and your cuttings are turning yellow, remove the cuttings take off the yellow leaves and start again. I wish you the best of luck with your plant.

Hi Bridgett, You've probably heard it all before, but very warm and humid using a media that doesn't hold to much or two little water should root your curtisii in short order. I've always wanted to experiment rooting and growing it in pure sphagnum moss as I have a feeling that it might do very well that way. H. curtisii really does not ever want to sit in wet soil as that will kill it in a hurry.

I just stick a stem in water and wait until it roots, then plant it. I've done a lot of that since I just can't bear to throw away any cuttings, lol .

I finally got rid of it last year, but it flowered many times since I made this video, and frequently when it got almost no sun at all. Hoya curtisii is an enigma. See this video of it that I made a year ago: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6WOy5Wyltreopc.html

I don’t know why, but this one doesn’t do well for me at all... I have no problem with any other of my hoya, but this one just will not get healthy for me 😫 it has been looking on deaths door for months but hasn’t fully died yet...

Hi Missi, Hoya curtisii is a miserable plant to get established. You might have fared better if you had started with a good sized plant. It literally won't grow without very high humidity. It can sit there for years without growing if conditions aren't to its liking, but it is also capable of very quick growth if it likes its environment.

I don't think so, because it was named after a collector named Mr. Curtis so if you are going to pronounce his name in the pronunciation of the plant it would have to be curtis ee eye

It is hard to correct something that was published 8 years ago. My pronunciation has gotten better of late I think. It should be Kur tis see eye as the plant is named after a someone named after Charles Curtis 🙂
