Two beauties I´m currently after, but difficult to get here in germany.
It used to be that growers in Europe had easier access to these Hoyas than us in the States. Hoya paradisea is pretty widespread here now. I wish you good luck in finding these plants!
Замечательно,что показывает мужчина свои красивые и любимые цветы.😊
Спасибо большое за приятный комментарий! Хорошего вам остатка недели.
Thank you Doig.. I just rec'd an open pollinated seedling from Gardino and now I'm anxious to see the difference. Even as a seedling the leaves are very largw
Good luck with your open pollinated seedling, and let me know how you make out with it. I still really love this Hoya!
Thank you for this discussion. It actually calms me down as most of my beautiful Hoya bella is light color... just propagated a stem. :)
Yes, I have found that these Hoya Bella come in all different shades of green, and just because it is light green, does not mean that it is not healthy. Good luck with your propagation!
Hey there donypu still own that plant?
I gave that plant away probably about 8 years ago, and last I knew it is in the window of a hair salon on Main Street in Burlington, VT. Too many plants and too little space!
Does it like to stay evenly moist? High humidity?
Yes to both of those. I have only grown it that way and it does extremely well. I have only grown it in high humidity grow tents, and have yet to experiment with it in ambient conditions. I recently started my large plant over from cuttings, and it is doing very well. I grow it in mostly coconut husk chips.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas do you sell cuttings at all?
@@plantyhappyandneedcoffee I only sell rooted cuttings periodically on eBay during the warmer months under the name erbtarzan24. They usually disappear so fast that they are hard to find.
Your hoya are amazing, and you are so knowledgable. Such a great information you share. I heard you might sell some of your cuttings sometimes? How do I get on the hoya cuttings list? I'm dying to get my hands on some of these beautiful specimen you grow!!!
Hi Doug I have a Hoya Australis Lisa. It’s a young plant and I’m starting to notice these brown spots on leaves, even the new ones. Any idea what I might be able to look at? I use Mollys aroid mix for my Hoyas and water when I see it’s dry and they are in terracotta pots.
I never had any luck growing Hoyas using nothing but terracotta pots; they seem to dry the mix out too quickly. I grow my Hoyas in clear plastic orchid pots with holes in them; these are then set into terracotta pots to give them stability and prevents algae from growing inside the pots as they block the light. I am unsure what is causing the brown spots on your leaves. I just looked up Molly's Aroid Mix, as I have never used it. The only thing that I don't really like in there is the clay balls (leca, or hydroton), I have added it to mixes before, and just never made out well with it. I grow almost everything now in coconut husk chips with a little added perlite, or for thin leaved Hoyas, vermiculite. I have had extremely good luck with 95% of my Hoyas using this as a substrate, and it is cheap. I really hope you solve your brown spot problem as I know more than anyone how annoying this can be!
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Thank you so much for your detailed reply. Someone else also suggested that I may have caused it from using miracle grow fertilizer. What do you typically do for fertilizer ?
@@user-bh3dk2oc6d I doubt that it is the miracle grow causing the issue. I primarily use Jacks 20-20-20 all purpose fertilizer at a 1/4 teaspoon per gallon every time I water.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thank you, the other possibilities I read about were either pests, edema or fungal but I don’t see any pests and don’t know how to differentiate the other two . I’ve isolated it for now and see what happens with it.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas hi Doug, I read or heard that you order internationally like once a year. Are there any places or suppliers that you have had good luck with overall?
Dealing with them now and got some advice from Facebook about using in self watering
Good luck!!!
But how do I use in self watering with pon and for pots I can’t remove from the greenhouse?!
In the Philippines we generally use coco husks for hoyas!
Thank you ❤
I knew I bought this purecrop1 for a reason! Just recently found root mealies in a variegated wayetii that’s been struggling. it’s fairly new to me still but the leaves were starting to close up on it and it’s in a mostly soil mixture. I want to do the root drench. Is there anything you recommend I do to the roots when I pull it out of this and transfer into something more chunky? Thank you so much for sharing your method with us!!
If it were my plant, I would hose off as much of the old mix as possible, and then soak the root ball in the Purecrop solution, then repot in a very loose mix. Then every time it needs watering for the next couple months drench the root ball if possible with the Purecrop solution. That should do the trick and you should be root mealie free. Good luck 🍀
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thanks so much! I’ll be treating asap!! It seems the dosage is different for a drench or watering vs spray? Is that cause the roots are more fragile?
You're very welcome. I have no idea why the root drench uses a lesser dose than when spraying. All I know is that I'm glad that drenching does use slightly less PureCrop 1 as this stuff is pretty pricey and the less used, the better.
isn't this the same as hoya desvoeuxensis? You did separate tours but I have read the swedish hoya society says they're the same.
While the foliage is the same, the flowers are so completely different that I believe them to be separate species.
Doug would you mind telling us how often you used it when you began your initial treatments? I’m all in and would like to follow your procedure! Thank you!!
Hi Lynda! I made Purecrop 1 a part of my watering routine and used it weekly for 3 months. I wanted to make sure that I killed everyone of those little buggers. I've finally stopped adding it, but I almost feel that I should keep it up. The product worked so well that I may just start it up again in the fall as a preventative. Good luck with your treatments, and I'm sure you don't have to use it nearly as long as I did to get the same results; I go overboard many times!
Hello Doug I'm new to hoya world. I have ordered a few starter for beginners. I just ordered the finlaysonii. I wanted it for the veined leaves and I can't afford the callistophylla. And to be honest I can't tell the differents other then the price. But anyway I was doing my research on this hoya and came across ur KZread video. That really made up my mind abt the finlaysonii tha😊nk you for the video and I will continue my research on all my new hoyas. And for me it's not the flowers it's the Foliage even though the blooms is a plus. Karen
Hello Karen, I can't believe that it has been 10 years since I made this video! You made a wise choice in getting a finlysonii; I think it will reward you with lovely foliage for years to come. Thank you for leaving the nice comment!
Can you make an updated video on your fertilizer products? Or list?
Hi Amy, the only thing that I currently use with my Hoyas is a very basic fertilizer Jacks 20-20-20 :www.amazon.com/Peters-Classic-20-20-20-Purpose-Fertilizer/dp/B00BIO560G/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1EDWALGIQX547&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.xFnMBzexSbtvh2jU5U9yHO01pjRGrPL0PEIKcIdOvWRi4BQM1AiLBQfhMro_gIKrZa3sXatQT6hTOyZIX_03WznsBFq-MW4VBb6Lk0ugzOEHE-v6NAriqEx5_bZBbzioLZRWWCebK9SydmNsgJiihhfP0uFDafnUVfa-kc_CLkzA2Nh8qLnBKUvv8aZ5mh5-R3J3qwDWq_3Jc8jw8zhm_5JtzS769RlFlgfzHugyfR8J4vRW2Qtb9169Fey-aADXBYfix_5F0w5_IZ35bWWGkOXl9eht71i3MCy__iej1iI.rwsSUTF-r9RQ0NuNj1782rx4jx4F1-BX9CWT1M8kweo&dib_tag=se&keywords=jacks+20-20-20+water+soluble+fertilizer&qid=1718996114&s=lawn-garden&sprefix=jac%2Clawngarden%2C88&sr=1-1 all purpose plant food at 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water in the summer and I cut that back to 1/4 teaspoon/gal in the winter. @@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thank you for the response, Doug!! I appreciate you and your videos!
peduncles, Doug! pentacles are something else..Thank you for this video, I may have this Hoya, this is the closest I've seen to the leaf I have at home.
Can you sale me some 😊please
Wow! Brilliant idea. Thank you .💚💚
You're welcome Asha, thank you for watching!
Doug, I know you sell on eBay but I dont know your seller name - I would really like to buy a "Doug Chamberlin Hoya"! Im in MA and would love to make a pilgrimage to you one of these days! I have learned so much from you! You are a rock star!
Good morning Catherine; thank you for the kind words! My eBay seller name is erbtarzan24. My listings don't usually last that long so they are hard to find. I don't have a store there, but just list rooted cuttings randomly when they are ready to sell. All the best to you, and thanks for reaching out.
Speechless 😶 ❤
Thank you! That is a plant that I could grow well at one time, but no longer. I’m glad that I made a video of it for posterity 😊
Hi Dave, I’m a newbie hoya collector coming at you from Nebraska! I am reaching out to ask if you would help me get a grow tent set up for incoming new plants. Quarantining them is my goal with the tent. I have no idea what I would need beside the tent itself. Any suggestions for getting the equipment is greatly appreciated. :-) Cheers!
Hi Ellen, Other than getting yourself an LED grow light, and fan, you might need some kind of plastic benches to set plants on if your tent is large enough. If it is a small tent, then don't worry about the benches. Grow lights have come way down in price so it should not be too expensive. Look to the reviews on Amazon, and you should not go too far wrong.
I'm looking at the 4'x4x'x80". The tent alone on amazon is $180.00 there is a tent w kit for $600.00. The kit has a ventilation kit and other things. Do I need a ventilation kit for that size you think
There is a Vivosun 4x4 grow tent for $129 that is plenty good enough; I have one. You don’t need a ventilation kit as all that would do is to exhaust the humidity out of the tent and that is the opposite of what you want to do.
Okay! Thank you very much for all your help. Cheers!
@@ellennovak5214This is the light that I use in that tent: MARS HYDRO 2024 New TSW2000 Led Grow Light 300 Watt Dimmable Daisy Chain Full Spectrum Growing Lamps for Indoor Plants Seeding Veg Bloom Light for 3x3/4x4ft Coverage. It is dimmable so you can adjust it to your needs. Good luck!
Impressive Doug! Can you update what happened to this/your imperialis?
It lives on as a much, much smaller plant, and lives in my basement grow tent where it flowers many times per year. I also probably sold 50 rooted cuttings of it over the years so many people must have this wonderful imperialis clone out there.
Hi,I have a big Calycina and it has about 20 buds but they don't flower. It is a cooler temperature Hoya?
I believe that Hoya calycina probably does like slightly cooler temperatures. My plants have generally flowered in the slightly cooler days of autumn. I don't know if you live where it is really hot or not. It might be best to check with a grower in Florida to see if they easily bloom this plant.
Thanks for reply. I live in eastern Europe 🙂
I was worried about my Hoya eyrithina because it started to develop curly leaves. I thought it acquired a virus like tomato plant leaf curls. But after seeing your Hoya the leaves look naturally curly
Yes, this is apparently how they grow. The leaves on my plant were curly for the entire time I kept it.
Afternoon Doug, it's been a while! These are so gorgeous and lush looking the blooms are so cool with their subtle beautiful colours! Hoyas never cease to amaze me with their variety of leaves and blooms. I am again out of room and I seriously need to rehome (a nice way to say sell) some to be able to add new Hoyas I can't live without... like IM-08 with the beautiful fuzzy blooms you made a video of a year or so ago.. she was an instant must have. It's almost impossible though... with all the new Hoyas coming on the market and prices so reasonable I need to be very careful, lol. I started using just the coco husks a year or so ago but found on the thinner leaved Hoyas I needed to add something to help retain water.... but also ended up watering everyone much more often.. so now my mix is the the coco husks, vermiculite and a bit of cactus soil. I'm still working part time so my time is important to be able to properly take care of all my Hoyas and enjoy them without burnout. Hope the weather has been kind to you... it's sure been terrible this spring for so many people. Take care and happy growing! 💚
Good morning Carol! There does seem to be more and more amazing Hoyas making into the trade. You are also correct that they are coming much faster than in the old days. I have the same problem with trying to figure out how to find space to bring some of them in, while still keeping some of my favorites around. Thank you for the advice on additives to add to the coco chunks to help retain some water for longer periods. I am beginning to find that it is not sustainable trying to keep some of these plants watered. Yes, burn out is a problem! I have almost eliminated root rot, but if I can't keep them watered enough, that causes its own issues. I am going to try gradually adding some more moisture retentive things like vermiculite each time I do an up-potting to see if it helps. Nice to here from you, and happy Memorial Day Weekend!
Hi Doug. I have a quetion not related to the video. In your knowledge and experience, can hoyas live for a long while just in water (with proper nutrition)? I have little success using substrates.
Absolutely beautiful, thank for sharing. Have a nice long weekend.Love Hoya Paradisea
Thank you! You too!
Thank you for showing us your beautiful blooms. Always nice to see a video from you.
You're welcome and thank you so much for watching!
Thank you Doug, beautiful Hoya ! 💐💚🙃
You're welcome and thank you for watching Judy💚💚
Always enjoyable, thanks
Thanks for watching Phill!
I don’t know how you have the patience to water a plant 3-5x’s a week along with the rest of your collection! When you restart it, hopefully one of the cuttings will take to a less fast draining substrate?😅 or a mix! Like coco husks + moss? I’m often drawn to hoyas from the Philippines or Borneo, but I’ll keep an eye out for PNG now 😉 Anyways, beautiful hoyas! Thank you for sharing 😊
Hi Ria! Funny you should mention the watering as it is becoming a problem for me. I simply can't keep many of these plants growing only in coconut husk chips wet enough, and I don't have the time for these long soaks to rehydrate them. Yesterday I up-potted one of them and used a 50% peat-based chunky mix like I used to use, to surround the root ball. I can't keep up with all of this very time consuming watering any longer. Watering a plant once a week is really all I've got in me. Thanks again for watching and I hope that you have a very enjoyable summer!
Thanks for sharing👍🏽! It's good to know that a professional hoya grower like yourself can have hoyas over 3 years that hadn't flowered till now. I've only started collecting hoyas around 2017 and the hoyas that survived from then are doing well but haven't yet flowered, although some have peduncles just 6 of the more recent purchases have. Look forward to your next! Dee, NY
I predict many Hoya flowers in your near future Dee! Have a great day!

Thanks, Doug, for the pictures and information. I've seen Hoya paradisea with two different accession numbers on the market. Do you happen to know if they are the same plant, and which one yours might be?
There are a couple of different clones, which I only recently found out. The one in the video is apparently the Indonesian clone, I purchased it as a small plant about a year ago from here: peaceloveandhappiness.club/ I was just gifted the PNG clone that has Nathalie Simonsson's accession number.
very beautiful. still looking forward to blooming one of these bell like hoya flowers. i guess you don't have any recommendations for someone without a grow tent.
I will tell you Kristie that many of these will surprisingly flower on a windowsill. Hoya danumensis which has large bell like flowers has been flowering now for a month on my windowsill. Don't give up hope, I know some people who seem to work miracle's without grow tents!
2:31 Those are wonderful flowers, didn't see the fringing in the 1st shots. I see Hoya yvesrocheri has stapelia like flowers, several species of Hoya do, which is unsurprising as they're from the same family of plants. I got a Hoya coronaria Narathiwat cutting (or several cuttings) from AH Hoya because of their resemblance to Stapelia flowers. Searching for the name, seems this was just an AH Hoya thing, wondered if they'd named it themselves - now I'm seeing another offering from TropicsAtHome, dunno if they got theirs from AH Hoya or if this is a now recognized subspecies. Anywho, the plant's been growing quite well but NO flowers so I've started a couple of cuttings in other locations, one with considerably more light. I do think Hoya are generally high light plants - but available space in a grow room...
I know what you mean about lack of space! I have been doing a lot of purging lately. It is also good to try these Hoyas in different spaces to see if it helps them flower, and many times it will. I finally got the H. yvesrocheri to flower by moving it to another location.
Love your posts. I've not heard of these hoyas before so thank you for sharing.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
