Doug I think I've watched this one a dozen times and I've purchased some of the products with good results. I'd like to throw out an idea for the future. It would be interesting to learn what you do when you put a plant in the "ER." In other words, what do you do when you have a delicate or failing plant? Just food for thought for a future video.

That is a very good thought Lynda! I may combine it with making a propagation box for starting Hoyas from cuttings as the care for an ailing plant is most often the same as starting them from cuttings.

I'm having a good year with the dozen or so Hoyas I have left from my collecting days. Obovata, cv. Jennifer, and motoski have had so many flowers I could barely see the leaves. It's when they look so wonderful that I feel guilty for not taking such good care of them anymore...some so pot bound, they dry out 2 hours after watering...and the root balls on a few of them have caused the pots to crack. I don't even fertilize. We have well water, which I think the plants like, but at this time of year, they are outside and mostly get rain water. The only bug problems I have are the occasional gang of aphids. Thanks for the rundown on all these plant products.

You are welcome. It is funny; I've seen it before with people who have these amazing plants with incredible floral displays, who seemingly do nothing to achieve them. I on the other hand use all of these products, baby the plants, re-pot them faithfully every two years, and can still struggle. Who knows why... Anyhow - good growing and thank you for taking the time to post a comment.

+Doug Chamberlain I think a lot of it has to do with the maturity of the plants, and also I think many of them like being pot bound...or maybe because they are so pot bound, they can't expand their roots so put their energy into budding. I had Hoyas that were 7 or 8 years old before they ever bloomed, so maybe that's part of it. I also put most of my plants outside in the summer, in semi shady spots. Most plants like being outdoors, and here in the mid Atlantic area, summers are so humid, it's like being in a greenhouse.

+Doug Chamberlain Now that i read your comment here, maybe i have a good information for you: I personally have H. lacunosa, multiflora, imperialis, archboldiana and micrantha. I have a botanist friend who worked much of his life with Ascleps and he told me that Flowering is, in some plants, a sign that the part where it starts to build up a flower is experiencing first signs of trouble and then the plant (genetically) decides to better start flowering now or it may die without producing offspring. I have experienced this with my Hoya imperialis: it produced a long offshoot and i bent it down because it was growing too high. Result: it completely stopped growing, didnt even grow any leaves, because of growth inhibitors that are affected by gravity accumulating in the growing zones. The plant immediately startet a new offshoot, this time i let it grow but it got caught in a window and the tip was cut off by someone who wasnt paying attention. Result: It is now growing an inflorescence at the next node below the cut off part. The plant is only 1.5 years old and seems (i heard) to flower only after 4 years or even later. So maybe youre "babying" some plants too much :)

There is definite truth in what you say! I have flowered many Hoyas that were extremely stressed. Some of those Hoyas flowered a couple of times and then died. Stress can flower some Hoyas in record time, but I have had many other Hoyas that were stressed not at all, growing wonderfully well, and will be covered top to bottom with flowers. Sometimes what causes flowering in Hoyas is just a mystery!

Quite frankly I have given up on all of these organic fertilizers as they are messy to mix, they smell, can't be left around in a mixed state and have to be used. I also think that they possibly have contributed to some of my root rot problems. I also have not seen any improvement to overall plant health or speed of growth. More power to to those who can go with fish emulsion and it works for them, but for me I saw no benefit.

I don't know how I missed this but this is a great video. Yeah I have heard of good things for Maxsea for carnivorous plants too like Nepenthes. Oh man, yeah lots of people swear by the super thrive but it's really snake oil for plants. I haven't seen any changes when I use it. But it doesn't hurt. Doesn't do anyway. May as well be stinky water. But like you said doesn't hurt either so that's good. When you go to hydroponic stores it's so overwhelming with all those bottles and I think it's the cool art that sells them not what they do. Love that shark on the cover.

So here I am thinking about fertilizers and reading and hearing different things but interested to hear you sound (best) advice. I have organic fish emulsion. With an NPK ratio of 5-1-4. I usually half dose it and even less for tiny pots and wash them through do avoid the root burn. My teacher yes a banana is also good even those the potassium is is 4. What do you think good for Hoyas? There is a seed weed one that is NPK 2.1.2 I think. I've also had flowering success with apples before.

Hi Fraser, I'm not going to be a good one to answer your question as I really don't pay that much attention to fertilizers. I've tried so many, with so many different supplements, and bloom boosters, and I could never tell that any of them actually worked. I say go with whatever you're used to working with. For the majority of my Hoyas I just use Jacks 20-20-20, at 50 percent the rate in the summer and 25% of the dose in the winter. Seems to work as good as anything else that I've ever tried.

Paul, it appears that SRQ Hoyas has stopped selling plants at least for now so I think the best way to add plants to one's collection at the present time is to look to Ebay. Cuttings and the more common plants can be had at a fairly reasonable price. Look for buy it now items, and don't get into bidding wars, because you will regret it - I speak from experience. The best bet for the really rare stuff is to look to Thailand vendors, but it takes nerves of steel, and is sort of like playing the lottery. I just hit the jackpot after many bad experiences with Thai orders. I talk about it in the Ramblings section of my website.

Yearly in this part of the county in Homestead Fl. at the Fruit and Spice Park orchid show we have many dealers that also sell Hoyas. I was just looking for more than the usually seen plants. I also have a large collection of orchids to keep me busy in my retirement. Have a good week, Paul

Hi Edemamee, First I have to say that I really don't understand a vendor in this country sending a plant bare root. I've seen this before, but I honestly don't get it. You have a plant that has already been shocked by being removed out of the rooting media so you are starting at a disadvantage. Warmth and humidity will be your best chance at bringing these plants back to full health. The vendor's potting media suggestion is fine. I would put the plants into a clear propagation box like the ones that I have demonstrated on one my videos if the room is chilly add a heating mat. It needs to be in a bright place; ideally under a grow light, but if you don't have it, use a window that provides no direct sun as you don't want to cook the plant. In about a month gradually start acclimatizing the plants to your home environment. That is the best advice that I can give at this point. Good luck with your plants!!

I am really bad at that truth be told, and knock on wood I've been really lucky as far as introducing pests into my collection. I think it is partly because I add very few plants each year. I do look them over very carefully and they are usually either cuttings or really small plants that I can check over very easily. If anyone has the room quarantining the plant is the best option. A new plant could also be sprayed down with a couple of drops of Dr. Bronner's soap and a couple of teaspoons of Azamax per gallon of water as a general cure all.

+Paul Schwartz Jr I just buy a big bag of orchid potting mix, and a smaller size bag of African Violet mix, and combine the two. Probably it equals 2/3 orchid mix and 1/3 AV mix, or somewhere in that range. I've had occasional problems with root rot, but it's mostly on older plants and it's been my own fault, due to haphazard watering practices.

I am using my grandsons iPad so it’s not Colton talking and making his comment it’s Kathleen Murphy because my phone isn’t working very well. I have my own KZread channel and talk about HoyaOrchids and houseplants. I had a beautiful or I should say I have a beautiful Crimson Princess hanging basket that I bought at a greenhouse. I noticed it had Meally bugsso the lady didn’t want to sell it to me... but I told her I still wanted to buy it and I would get rid of the Bugs by squishing them with my finger and then spraying that area with rubbing alcohol. So she sold it to me at a discount. It was quite infested but my fingers in the alcohol did the trick over a period of a couple weeks. They always seem to hide so you have to put the plant in different positions to catch them all. It seems like this lady at her greenhouse tends to have problems with these bugs because I bought a lipstick plant I noticed when I got them home that they also had some Millie bugs. The microphone on The iPad doesn’t know how to spell the name of the bug so sorry about that I’m tired of correcting it every time I see it. I got rid of the bugs the same way fingers and alcohol. I don’t like to use any systemic insecticide because I would hate for my cat to chew on that plant or chew on a leave the bell off at plant or put any dead leaves from one of my house plants into the compost pile. Plus I would have to be careful and not put any house plant bloomed outsideBecause of the hummingbirds and other pollinators. Plus I tend to recycle my potting soil and I would like to think that everything is contaminated so I’m glad to hear how careful you are and telling everyone to be careful with systemic products

Hi Kathleen, you are really amazingly persistent to be able to get rid of mealy bugs with your fingers and alcohol! More power to you! You are right in that systemics should be absolutely the last option used. I really don't like them!
