    "What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die" This is probably the first time a song actually helps me through suicidal ideas. This sentence makes a very good point. We could all die at any moment, so why rush things ? Death will come to us all eventually. We just have to wait.

    Be strong never think of death if so think of a valiant death one against many. Cowards run in numbers ALWAYS and attack helpless individuals. So look I dont know where u are but let me be an example on how to handle whatever comes your way with running tot recruit. Another thing pay attention on who will actually help do bad things if they refuse they have some kind of self respect.follow me.

    The fact he slips out of his caricature at the word „narcissistic“… You can here his exhausted disgust. As if he heard it a million times before. Those insults get pointed to you mostly from the people who got a problem there by themselves. Intentionally or not, it perfectly fits the theme.

    Two meanings can be applied to this song. In context with the album it’s about how people talk to addicts. They tell them ‘instead of using, why don’t you just end it right now’ as a dare. They assume it’s just for attention. They don’t ask ‘what the hell happened? How did you get to this state?’ But if you have ever been in an abusive situation where someone makes empty threats of self harm and acts dysfunctional/plays up their problems, and exaggerates all their pain to keep you there, it’s absolutely how you feel as part of the healing process. It’s absolutely ok to not like people like this, because of the harm they cause you, and cope through music. It’s absolutely ok to not go easy on people everyone knows just like drama and sympathy so they can weaponize it, even if everyone acts like attention seekers are perfect little angels who deserve your excessive mental energy now, if they don’t just pretend people like that don’t exist. I have seen both sides. Not as an addict but as a kid who would try to talk about my mental health issues, only to be accused of faking it for attention. But I have since been on the receiving end of someone like this. He used to absolutely cause issues, play up his dysfunction, and threaten to hurt himself to keep me aroujd and keep all eyes on him. Then it escalated to murder-suicide threats… and threats against others. Those were not empty. He proved it. So as much as we want to believe all people accurately report their pain and have no idea how dramatic they seem when they are intoxicated or having an episode, and never have ulterior motives, that isn’t the case. Some people do know, and they count on it so they can cause more pain.

    These lyrics can fit into many life situations and issues with many disconnections between people in their daily life’s. For me it hits home witnessing someone you love slowly kill themselves with their drug of choice, alcoholism is the #1 thing that hits me in this song. Also the lyrics I think say “you’re pounding on a fault line “ And.. “Such a mess Over This, Over This” Being an alcoholic myself for many years, trying to better myself has been a hurdle and a lucky break that I needed in my life, if luck is helping me then I’m going to keep grasping onto luck, but been sober for most of this year! Being trapped in an alcohol cycle is dangerous, and can continue for many years. For me this song is a confirmation that others have felt this..maybe trying to save a family member currently struggling and possible longterm illnesses that, without alcohol maybe wouldn’t have existed in them in the first place. it kills. Slowly. Stay positive! Alcohol is a depressant!!

    For me it takes on a different meaning when you listen to the whole album. It’s about how people assume an addict is just killing themselves for attention because they don’t know why they use or how they got there. But alone, it makes me think of my abusive ex who used the fact that there was a lot of suicide in my family and friend history to keep me around. In one view, the person singing is the asshole. In the other, the subject is the asshole. I love that. Pet/Counting bodies like sheep, is another good example. The lyrics are the same in both songs but the music and repetition changes the meaning entirely. One sounds like an over-bearing parent or partner. The other sounds like a battle cry for a dystopian nightmare world.

    This describes my best friend for 15 years well. We became best friends in middle school, he used to give solid advice. He taught me well, but later when we were apart for so long he kind of became a reckless, narcissistic asshole, he's hard to be reasonable without being over-criticized by small mistakes I've made. It sucks that your best friend became something that he used to be against.

    I feel his frustration in his lyrics. Im going thru this right now in a couple of different situations and even was on the other end of it at one point in life. You just wanna shake these people and slap some sense into them because you know its gonna end terribly but there is nothing you can do but watch it in horror or just disconnect yourself from the situation to save your own well being. That’s not what he’s saying at all. Here, read it from Maynard’s own lips: "[In] the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off." You don’t have any fucking idea what another person is enduring. Congratulations, you are literally the judgmental asshole he is *condemning*. And you think he’s on your side, lol.

But don’t take it from me, here’s Maynard: “Maynard clarified that the song's message was meant to be a criticism of people who do not understand the struggles of people dealing with depression and suicide, saying: "[In] the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off."

    The lyrics are wrong at the end. Its "why do you wanna throw it away like this? Over this? COALESCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Then maynard (in the middle of the scream is giving the cut it off signal to the soundboard guy....) I dont think maynard liked it at the moment, but that was his best scream of all time.

    RIP Layne

  • @vdawggie

    @vdawggie

    Жыл бұрын

    yeah, this song is about Layne's demise with a massive heroine addiction which sucked every last drip of humanity out of him. Maynard used to visit him and every single time he went, Layne was either ripped or completely hung over to the point he couldn't even talk. Layne became a hermit of sorts and nearly unrecognizable in public and weighed under 80lbs when he died. That's really sad!!!

    This is my 24 year old daughter. Her birthday is today. I had to cut her off to spare her 6 siblings, her father and myself the misery. I couldn’t watch it anymore. No amount of help helped, no amount of love was reciprocated. She has a newborn baby sister who will likely never know her. It kills me every day.

    I'm sorry to hear this! My step son is behaving simular he's 22 almost 23. Constantly lying and threatening to yknow. My oldest son passed away in 2020 he knows it upsets me so I had to finally cut him out of my life. His father (my late husband) would be so upset with what he's doing. 😢
