Same here. Toxicity came out when I was a freshman in highschool and my older brother bought the album. One day when he and his best friend were blasting it, I was captivated right away and from that day onwards, I became a metal head. It was as if the metal version of Cupid struck me with an arrow, thereby making me fall in love with the metal genre. My daughter and I have an inside joke about when I'm an old lady in a nursing home, she'll undoubtedly be getting phone calls from the nursing home director about me playing SOAD way too loudly and disturbing the other residents 🤣

This song reaches the depths of my soul.

I've always thought of this song to be about killing ones own ego. People with too big of an ego often have a perception of the world that does not extend beyond themselves, and are short sighted (when you lose small mind you free your life) Because once you can do that, you can actually drop your insecurities and thrive. (We lose ourselves but we find it all). "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall"

It goes beyond that. The song sums up our whole existence - "Life is a waterfall, we're One in the river and One again after the fall." Meaning, that we're truly one with the River (Universe, God), we just feel like different personalities in this life (Waterfall), but we'll only find that out when we're back in the River (or if we lose small minds and free our eyes). When we "put up our walls", we try to distance ourselves from that primordial Unity and think of ourselves as separate beings, but in reality, that's just our ego speaking, who can't come to terms with that we're actually One and do not exist as separate entities. The ego exists only during the Waterfall which is temporary and the River is eternal. At the end of the video, our protagonist comes to terms that every material thing in this world is meaningless and temporary (like a waterfall).

It is glorifying the deception of life in which most followers of the world ignorantly indulge in ( i.e. earthly pleasure now as opposed to Heavenly pleasure later:afterlife) . It acknowledges creation and the fall of humanity. It advocates for wanting to 'play' and the right to 'choose' between good and evil ( NB: human nature is by default evil) . Yeah I'm spiritual and I definitely see a Christian worldview in the lyrics. Living for this world is temporary and will get you nowhere at all. No matter how hard you try you'll never be truly happy, never. God allows or may even put trials and tribulations in our lives so we can turn to Him, but we've knowingly or, in most cases, unknowingly have pushed His Truth (anything He speaks) so far down we've forgotten who He even is or reject His existence. This has accumulated since even before the flood. After the fall of man, sinful human nature will never be perfect and will never reach its full potential. Sin is actually a noun and it controls the heart of anybody with a dead spirit. The only way to reconnect with God with an alive spirit (born again) and sin no longer having control over you is to believe Jesus died for that purpose, believe He is God, and accept to give up your own will for His; a promise God made thousands and thousands of years ago. Sin then becomes a memory, so you'll remember its enjoyment, its pleasures, and its temptations and sin will try even harder knocking at your door wanting to be back in your life. It doesn't matter how severe the evil you've done in your life, God will always accept and love you unconditionally because He's literally the embodiment of love (Paul the apostle killed Christians in the name of the law and God still forgave and loved him and used Him as one of the most influential Christ followers). God created free will so we can choose to follow him in sincerity instead of Him making us mindless robots, that's just not what a loving God would do and that would just show selfishness on His part if we were mindless robots. With the Holy Spirit residing inside us and focusing on the fruits of the spirit, it makes it easier, eventually natural, to fulfill God's law instead of forcefully obeying it and will give us an eternal life in Heaven. That will lead to true happiness and many many people can give their own personal testimonies of the radical life change they've had for the better. People reject God's existence because of limited human understanding, but deep down they want it to be true because of what comes out of believing and following. "You never know just how bad you are until you try hard to be good", C.S. Lewis (former atheist who tried his absolute best to prove God doesn't exist). SIde Note: if God didn't exist, then we would be oblivious of what evil is and how it has affected this world, but since He does and everyone is made in his image (character) we somehow ask the question, "what's wrong with this world?". We want it to be a eutopia but we know it's not
