"Give this to ME! MINE! MINE! MINE!" "The Package" is a beastly song in every way. Maynard's vocal range, the bass, the guitar...just everything. You're 100% correct addikt.

The final lyrics have always hit me the hardest. "If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere, do it somewhere far away from here" where it seems like he is basically walking away from the situation and that person out of sheer frustration with their mindset.

Its crazy cuz Maynard wrote the song from the perspective of someone who doesnt understand the levity of the depression that one of their friends is going thru. So I agree the lyric is awesome, but he wrote it from the perspective of someone who is being an asshole. I love this song lol

That last "Over Thiiiiiis!" is such a perfect, genuine catharsis. It's such a guttural, throat-y kind of yell. Basically a loud growl. True emotion. This song rips!

I saw APC in 2003 (I was still in high school) in Dayton Ohio it was on black friday. I had the album but never checked out Gravity, I'm not sure why? On the drive back to Columbus hearing Gravity and the snow falling was really a mood setting feeling that I have never forgot and anytime it snows now I think of that song and that experience.

Oh, I cannot WAIT for their reaction to The Package by A Perfect Circle. If they went crazy over this one, especially for the bass guitar groove, they're going to lose it while hearing that one.

That song came up in my random mix just this morning on the way to work. One of my favorites, just the *crunchiness* of that riff - I don't know if they have distortion on the bass or what. Important thing to note though - all the songs on this album are about drugs including this one. It sounds political but isn't. They did make a different mix of this song, intended more as the political version.

Straightforward, provided you remember what was happening in the world back in 2003. Particularly in the United States and the Middle East. "Swaying to the rhythm of the New World Order and count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums!" That pair of lines and Maynards vocal delivery of it still gives me goosebumps to this day, almost twenty years later. Powerful song.

Drove 10.5hrs from coastal VA to Nashville to see them live

As a bassist myself and someone who LOVES and respects the bass in many ways, I loved that he stood up and walked away. APC is awesome

This album dropped in a extremely turbulent time in my life, addiction had me and my friends in its grasp. This album is 100% about addiction, and when i listen back to it, it brings me to a painful part of my life, lost friends, terrible life choices and a dark path i was on. Luckily i am 10+ years clean.

It's the arrangement, imo. Such excellent musicianship; but the arrangement brings it all together! Love this band, thank you for checking them out!

Josh Freese is one of the most talented and GROOOOOVY studio drummers out there. His work with A Perfect Circle totally shows how he learns his way around a song to add in so many juicy subtle details.

Thirteenth Step is an absolute masterpiece. Hope to hear you guys react to more APC! Pet, Gravity, and The Noose are a few other standouts but it really is an album that's best to experience start to finish.

You guys straight jizzing about that bass is the best thing Ive seen in awhile! LOL ----and btw, You guys would absolutely love the video for this song as well.

There’s also a really cool (or sad) way to view the album entirely from the perspective of the user who is projecting what they think everyone else thinks of them, which causes them to burn bridges and sinks them further into the hole of addiction. Preach! I've been listening to this song for about 17 years and I always followed the drums and guitar, but for some reason in the last 2 years I'm searching for the bass in every song I hear (been a drums person pretty much all my life). And the bass in this is exquisite.

I had this cd in my car for 2 years straight in high school. An all-time great album for me personally. Listen to the package.

Jeordie White was also the bassist for Marilyn Manson on "The Beautiful People" (under the pseudonym Twiggy Ramirez). This was also his first album with a perfect circle. Between Mer de Noms and Thirteenth Step, Jeordie replaced Paz Lenchantin on bass and James Iha (of the Smashing Pumpkins) replaced Troy Van Leeuwen on second guitar.

From what I understand, a big inspiration for this song/ album was Maynard’s friendship and life/ addiction of the original lead singer of Alice In Chains, Lane Staley.

If Matthew and juggalo weren't writing loud enough, I would really encourage you to take a gander at that rendition of "Orestes" from the Stone and Echoe show. Remember his mother, Judith, was paralyzed for nearly 30 years. Paralysis is not a stagnant condition. Spending decades with your entire body atrophying causes a dynamic, not just musculo-skeletal but a degeneration of the internal organs as well. A slow and quite painful degradation which his mother probably didn't complain about but was plain to her son. Orestes is the myth of a son who kills his mother to avenge his father. While that's is not the motivation that comes into play for Maynard, certainly a contemplation of euthanasia must have crossed his mind and I interpret this song as reinforcement of that theory. How many people are living in pain because their families struggle saying goodbye? The first time I heard the live version of this song from Stone and Echoe I thought, "This might very well be the most beautiful music I've ever heard!"

The whole album is just a masterpiece.

My brother dealt with addiction, depression and suicidal urges for a long time and we always tried to help him through it. A couple months ago he killed himself. My entire life he was my best friend and I am so angry he chose to leave us the way he did. So yeah, this song hits really deep now listening to it. Because I know for the rest of my life I'll never fully understand why he did it, and that it will never stop hurting.

Definitely one of my top APC tracks. I was smiling ear to ear the entire time watching your reactions!

I love this song. Probably my favorite track off a near perfect album. Please do some more APC reactions in the near future. You've barely scratched the surface of what this band can do.

I’ve listened to this song 64,000 times, and it seems to get better each time. Love seeing y’all hearing it for the first time.

The Outsider isn't the person being sung about, the person isolating themselves. Its the narrator passing judgment without the slightest clue how they'd feel in that person's shoes. Treating a loved one like they're garbage when they need you the most. That's straight from Maynard on the aMOTION DVD.

APC's "The Thirteenth Step" album is about the 12 steps of Addiction Recovery (i work in addiction recovery and personally 14 yrs sober myself so this album has a lot of meaning to me). Each song corresponds to one of the twelve steps of recovery with a "bonus" final step. While people have many different objects of addiction, the behavioral patterns are always similar, to the point that learning about the programs can be beneficial even to sober, healthy people. A "bullet" is drug slang for a cocaine vial, you've probably seen them in movies, the type that people wear disguised as a necklace or w/e to go get a quick bump in the bathroom - though the "Russian Roulette" double entendre is likely intended as well. I'll leave it to others to get into more specifics because learning about this stuff is half the fun of this type of high art. 15:52……..the musical pause as a musician myself gets me every single time. It’s the sort of moment that is a joy to play live if a band is in the groove together

This is possibly my favorite album, production-wise. It sounds PERFECT every second.

This song is excellent. Give “Blue” a listen form the same album.

My favorite APC song by far, especially that last bit where everything gets super heavy. But the lyrics really put this song over the top - where it seems like Maynard is critiquing depression, he's actually calling out people who misunderstand depression and Maynard is critiquing that stance, the stance of the outsider. Here's the quote from Maynard: The lyrics to "The Outsider" at face value, are in judgment of a potentially self-destructive or suicidal individual, though Maynard clarified that the song's message was meant to be a criticism of people who do not understand the struggles of people dealing with depression, saying: "[In] the case of "The Outsider", it's sung from the perspective of a person who doesn't understand at all what their friend is going through, what their loved one is going through, and they think that it's more like a sprained ankle; they can just kind of walk it off." Y'all should check out Goliath by Karnivool or their newest one, All It Takes.

Jeordie White (a.k.a. Twiggy Ramirez) was on the bass guitar in these years of A Perfect Circle. When George mentioned the sound of grungy 90's....he wasn't wrong. The dark tone that Jeordie has is what made early Marilyn Manson years so distinct. Instrumentally speaking.

I always liked this song but never took the time to analyze the lyrics. That’s what I love about this channel. You guys sometimes change my mind about songs that I’ve heard a hundred times before, whether it’s in a good or bad way. Great song and great reaction!

One of my favorite albums, great song. Love Gravity! Y'all are right that it's from Maynard's perspective of "the outside looking in", also drugs specifically addiction. This whole album is about addiction, the different stages/process of addiction, even the 12 step program, hence 12 songs & album title 13th Step (also about the 12 steps). In this song Maynard sings about being an outsider to someone who's addicted, Maynard has never been addicted so he doesn't understand why someone would do this to themselves. He does this by expressing his frustration & anger. In interviews, he's mentioned his late friend Layne Staley from Alice in Chains. Discussing Maynard drawing inspiration from Layne's addiction & ultimately his death. Also your point about the song helping people, Maynard has said those things "I do want to help people who are on that borderline, who might hear a song and go, "You know what, I think I want to try to live."" Really the whole album is great!! Love when you guys get this excited about a song!

Also Billy Howerdel is a visionary. I'm sure that it why Maynard teamed up with him. Billy put out a solo album like a couple years ago and it is excellent.

You might as well do a reaction to the entire ’Thirteenth Step’ album because it is pure sonic mastery from start to finish. If you love the feeling and weight of the bass here, checkout the opening track ‘The Package’. It has the mass of a planet! The production, the arrangements, the songwriting and musicianship on the album is just perfect throughout.

Maynard as a writer for me, is up there with the best lyricists to have ever done it! So much variation with different topics, and to top it all off he is an amazing singer!

For the most part you guys interpret these “grunge” song pretty accurately…and are always open to new listens. Keep doing what your doing cuz it’s 🔥

The lead guitarist Billy Howerdel , was Adam Jones his guitar tech on the first three albums, I believe it was the glass houses tour, that Maynard Told the crowd that was Billy’s last album that he was going to be there guitar tech, because he was going on his own, so he learned from the MASTER

Probably sacrilege to a lot of fans but I honestly prefer A Perfect Circle to Tool these days. Orestes, The Noose, Feathers... so many incredible tracks.

I’ve always loved APC but could never get into tool. Couldn’t ever understand why APC didn’t blow up like tool did they were so incredible

Orestes is my favorite Maynard track, that is a fact. As for APC vs Tool, Tool came first, and when I first heard them it was an awakening for me to a new form of musical/lyrical expression, and TOOL has more of a catalog to choose from. But I love all three of his bands, I want all the Maynard I can get.

Stone temple pilots is another band I feel you should revisit as well. Their first album is a classic for grunge. Check out Wicked Garden and Sex Type Thing, really think you’ll enjoy them!
