I don't give a shit if anyone disagrees with me but to me, this is the best produced song of all time. Plain and simple.

It's unbelievable that this song is almost 25 years old. The underlying menace and the way they build tension throughout the track is unparalleled.

Out of left field here, but "Angel" was used in an episode of "The West Wing" in a long scene depicting an impending kidnappping, and it was a perfect choice, for the factors you mentioned -- menace, building tension. Watching the scene, you don't know what's about to happen, but because of the music, you know it's something big and dangerous.

I've been saying for awhile now I think music is digressing, but not exactly. We have plenty of bands/musicians putting out highly futuristic amazing music, it just it lacks a certain vibe that really keeps you from coming back over and over in the way a Massive Attack or Portishead song does for you.

This album was the anthem of the 90s for so many people here in the UK. Massive Attack and Portishead are national treasures here.

My absolute dream. I was probably the only 11 year old girl in Kansas, US. that even knew who Massive Attack and Portishead were. I dreamed of seeing all of them live. If we got a time machine, I'd go on a 90s trip-hop tour and see all my favorite bands. They just dont make em like this any more. What was it like to watch them live?

Maynard James Keenan once said that he felt bands like Massive Attack were the future of music. I love love love this album.

to me, as a metal head, in my late teens, and being exclusive and not tolerant of any other type of music at that period in my life, when I first heard this, it just made me shut up. And I loved this whole album. Also, that first "breaking the intolerance barrier", helped me become way better musician later in life... that whole album is a masterpiece

well, I've always been a fan of metal and... electronic music, but more like that atmospheric stuff. Mezzanine just never gets old. I remember after my first listen I just listenned to it non-stop 24/7.

First time I saw Massive Attack live was on 98’ Mezzanine European Album tour in Graz, Austria. They played in an ice hockey hall and performed an extended version of the whole album from A to Z plus a few older songs at the end. When the bass kicks in at the beginning of Angel, the first song on the album, it started snowing inside the hall. It was not snow but the paint that was peeling off the ceiling of the hall because of the massive vibration of the Bassline sound. It was pure magic. ❤

Meanest bass line you can hear live. Unforgettable experience... It bangs on the walls and beat your guts. One of the greatest "WTF" feelings I ever had in a concert.

I love how they use the lyric "neutralise" at the same time that they throw everything away they've brought in up to that point. Genius.

Seeing you react to Massive Attack is almost giving the same buzz I got when I first listened to them in the early 90s.

Sound engineering on this album is absolutely incredible. Sonic art of the highest level. Both artists and engineers were pioneers.

@@jordieg-us4ee Their album 100th Window is definitely worth checking out. It came after Mezzanine and is kind of a continuation of that sound but into an even darker direction.

This song is a master class on how to build tension in a song to an absolute climax and then back to the quiet brooding tension. The official music video adds so much to the experience as well and its very worth checking it out if you havent seen it

"Still sounds futuristic over 30 years after it's release." Experimental? Yes, unquestionably. Futuristic.....sadly, no. It sounded dated in the 90s and sounds even older now. The drumbeat is a canned Clyde Stubblefield beat (something which defines the early 90s hip-hop and trip-hop sound and is heard in everything from Fresh Prince to N.W.A., Boyz II Men to En Vogue, and everything in-between), the soaring vocals are pure 90s, the synths are pure 90s synth sounds. Everything about it screams "90s" at the top of its lungs. Angel on the other hand, has none of those traits and you'd be extremely hard-pressed to say when it was released.

One of THE GREATEST British albums of all time. Massive Attack are pioneers. An absolute stone cold classic. I have no idea how they made this so good.

I've listened to this song probably thousands of times and every time that guitar lead drops, goosebumps all over. Every. Single. Time.

Horace Andy has gotta have one of the best and most distinctive voices in all of Reggae. Fantastic track and vocal feature by him. He's an absolute legend in his own right.

This album is incredible. Starts with 4 straight bangers, short interlude, then 5 more absolute scorchers. Also the bass mixing and overall production on this album is some of the best I've ever heard, just insane.

the mixing is great, the mastering doesn't, it's one of the releases of their time that started to suffer the trend of the loudness war, resulting in flat dynamics and loss of impact and energy

Dissolved Girl is another good one by Massive Attack that you guys would like. Love this reaction! DJ Shadow's album Endtroducing is another legendary trip hop album. A good song to check out would be Building Steam With a Grain of Salt. 🤠

@@m-4136 it refers to the difference between loud and quiet sounds. It also has full spectrum of sound. Modern music for example has very low dynamics because all the sounds are nearly the same volume. It sounds like a brickwall and very tiring for the ears

Massive attack never gets old.

From the first bars of the first song (ie this one) you feel something you almost never feel in music: danger. That's a big part of what makes this so interesting: engaging the listener with unease, and then completely hooking them with pure liquid fire.

Where is Bristol trip hop? Wait did you mean "Being from Bristol,*?" You also need a period or even a comma after "live too."

This was unbelievable live. Was so loud and the bass was just levitating. Also, Grant (Daddy G) from Massive Attack used to come and buy fresh fish off a stall I worked on at St. Nicholas Market, Bristol. He slipped me a promo press only copy of 100th Window, on CD of course, about a week before it released and said 'don't give that to anyone else', with a wink.

I was raised by Gen X teenage parents so trip hop was my soundtrack as a child. So glad to see you cover this!

You’ve stumbled across one of the greatest records ever made. I’m not exaggerating. I’d put this in the top 2 of the nineties, top 25 of all time. Mezzanine is a masterwork, full stop. Menacing, tense, dark, apocalyptic, futuristic. It’s 25 yrs old and still sounds like it’s from the future. This record deserves nothing less than a complete listen from beginning to end. As we see from your reaction, you just know immediately that you’re hearing something special. I cannot speak highly enough about it. It’s superlative by any standard.

The band was formed under such unique circumstances and a really solid array of session musicians over the years they are untouchable on originality. Mezzanine itself is just timeless and has aged like fine wine. It was innovative for the time on the tech front and held up. Once in a generation stuff. George and Ryan, you're in for a treat when you listen to this start to finish. A perfect listen.

4:00 I think the reason why it sounds really great despite it being simple is the composers of "Angel" understand musical dynamics and how to build to something. It's noticeable compared to music released today where there's very little thought put into how soft or loud a note should be.

Your were like kids in the candy store mesmerized by the sparkly shapes and colors then discovering that you could actually eat it. This was weeks of mixing and remixing in the studio. Watch it flow directly from their finger tips, see Angel live and feel the tears.

Fun fact: 3D - the white dude - is probably Banski, and if not definitely has a connection to him, he himself was a pioneer in stencil back in the day

Massive Attack is easily in my top 3 of my favorite bands of all time. And I've been listening to music since the late 60s. So many amazing songs by this group.

Such a good song. Video is amazing too. Video, dude running away from his fears and then he stops and turns around and faces them and his fears are scared of him. It's so powerful. Song is a masterpiece.

Mezzanine is an all-time album for me. Just sublime from top to bottom. It slides effortlessly from grimy claustrophobia to euphoric joy to bittersweet melancholia, and every mood it delivers is so all-enveloping that you don't want it to end.

Incredible song. Incidentally, Massive Attack would agree with you about the genre name trip hop! It’s worth noting that the area of Britain they come from is very rural. Bristol is a city but not a big one. Secondly, it has a big West Indian population so there was a lot of dub and reggae around which seeps it’s way into Massive Attack’s sound. The band also have talked about liking hip hop and film soundtracks which also you can hear in their atmospheric soundscapes. Finally, fans of Luther will know the theme song is by the band. Next up try something by Tricky or Sneaker Pimps ‘6 under’ ( Nelle Hopper remix)

Having Horace Andy sing with them definitely shows their respect for reggae and dub.

Massive Attack has so much "feel" in their electronic production. It's a rare trait. Normally I care more about melody and song structure, but with Massive Attack I love the window-dressings. Everything is so lush and vibey. It's the perfect late night album. It's like inner-city decaying urban environment.

This is one of the most legendary albums ever in any musical genre and was most definitely timeless and way ahead of its time. Im so glad you guys love this!

The end of Group Four if you've got a proper subwoofer is fucking otherworldly.

If you loved 'Glory Box' by Portishead, you probably need to listen to 'Hell is around the corner' by Tricky - both use the same sample from Isaac Hayes 'Ike's Rap II' (from the album ‘Black Moses’) in beautiful and different ways (Portishead were first to use it in '93, Tricky the following year) I'd love to hear you review One Dove's 'Morning Dove White' (especially 'Fallen'), and Lamb's 'Fear of Fours' (especially 'Bonfire') - more British trip hop type beautiful electronica

A truly epic song. It's like it was made for an movie scene when that chorus hits. No wonder it's been feature so many times in TV, movies, games, commercials, etc.

Massive Attack and Portishead are two of the best representations of how creative the music scene is in my home city.

This album along with Portisheads stuff, DJ Shadows Entroducing etc were the soundtrack to my late teens and early twenties. It was incredible ❤ Great reaction guys!

This song is thrilling, powerful and hypnotic at the same time! I remember living in Bristol at that time in 1998 when this came out! I knew Massive Attack's previous albums, but this one was a shift in their sound, a new exploration, a sound combination that was beyond. I will always remember when I came across them walking down the street when I was going to work; I doubted about saying hello or whatever and finally when they passed by me just couldn't. I was 22 and that moment for me was truly special!❤

I'm primarily a hard rock fan ...... especially groovey, doom / stoner etc, some technical, some blackened etc ........ but Mezzanine is simply one of the greatest albums of all time.

Seeing that live is one of my alltime favorite concert moments. All live instruments - guitar, bass and drums. And man... when those drums kicked in you could just feel a slow building roar from the crowd as if everyone just had to really realize how absolutely fantastic the sound was. Crystal clear and perfectly balanced. And while sounding great the entire band just stood there in hoodies in massive backlight looking cool as fuck. It was spectacular.

First time viewer and might gotta subscribe now. Y’all’s energy is tangible and it’s making my day rn

Today bought tickets for a Massive Attack concert, 6th time already. They are always amazing live. And this particular song is always a favorite. Played live, the beat hits so deep it almost hurts....almost. And then they throw in the guitars..... I often think concerts are too loud for their own good, but this song is the exception. You don't just hear it, you need to feel it. Glorious.

Angel is great. You should try out a song with one of the many amazing female vocalists that have featured on their tracks. Teardrop, Protection or Unfinished Sympathy.

This is one of those tracks that just never gets old, I've listened to it so many times over the decades and it just sounds fresh every damn time...that build up and release? Legendary...

Massive Attack are 100% Pure Genius. They are also fantastic live . Have a listen to their track "Special Cases".

Makes me realise how lucky I was being in my 20s in the 90s . The music was phenomenal. The way all different genres started to mix together.

I lived in Bristol for a bit though originally from London. Bristol is a city that drips music of diverse genres. There is a large Caribbean community there, especially Jamaicans. Reggae, dancehall and other elements of reggae are popular. So it makes sense it would find its way into Trip Hop Also Massive Attack and Tricky really brought the ragga and spoken word of Hip Hop. Bristol has a massive artistic, spoken word, media ting going on too. I love the place.

One of the best albums of all time. Perfect for a late night drive through a desert cityscape.

Glad to see someone mention hooverphonic that band doesn't get near enough recognition.

Been a trip hop head for over 10 years, and its great to see peoples reaction to the music. I meet a lot of people who say they've never heard the genre before, but show 'em some "Clubbed to Death" by Rob Dougan, some, "6 Underground" by Sneaker Pimps, and some, "Teardrop" by Massive Attack, and it turns out alot of people HAVE come across the genre at some point. That outta the way. You've heard Portishead, and Massive Attack (also Zero7 apparently). There's a ton of other bands/outfits, and you've heard some of the more important ones, but some of the standout ones missing are Sneaker Pimps (i suggest their songs "walking zero" or "6 underground"), and DJ Shadow (i suggest his songs "building steam with a grain of salt" or "midnight in a perfect world"). Of course i could list off dozens of others but these cover your bases.

The ultimate Massive Attack banger is "safe from harm" also in the trip hop family is DJ Shadow go for "building steam with a grain of salt" love your shit fave reactors definitely getting patron specifically for lost in vegas.

Ultimate Massive Attack banger is a tough call. Got to be Unfinished Sympathy for me, specifically the Pefecto mix, but man Safe from Harm is a banger too...

the whole album is one of the greatest ever Black Milk is one of my all times favorite songs

I have never had as much chills as when I first saw Massive Attack live for the first time in '99 and this song came on. It's something about being hit by those low, rumbeling sub-bass lines you can't hear but those huge concert speakers vibrates your core.

I love the way you both present different ways of describing and interpreting the song. And I love the perspective your taking of appreciating the skill and talent that goes into making music, even when one doesn't like the genre.

Most epic reaction to this song, ever. Thank you, guys, for really appreciating this song. Very underrated, and a lot of people miss the little details you catch and love. Keep it coming!! 💯

I would love a trip hop marathon. Massive Attack alone have so many good cuts, Inertia Creeps, Man Next Door, Karmacoma and of course the other really big 2 Unfinished Sympathy and Teardrop (aka the music from House). Other stuff, Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground was iconic back in the day. Portishead are just ungodly sublime music. Tricky from Massive Attacks solo material is absolutely dope as well, Hell Is Around The Corner which uses the beat from Glory Box and the cover of Public Enemy Black Steel in The Hour of Chaos are off the chain. More recently Sevdeliza did a song that was obviously a tribute to the Bristol Trip-Hop scene called Rhodes. It was both a great tribute and banger in its own right. (Also, not to be a NARC or anything but Massive Attack are three people. There is a very credible theory that Rob, one of the three, is the secret identity of the street artist Banksy. Unconfirmed but personally, I believe it.)

i think i might be the only one who prefers Heligoland over everything else, that album is just so damn good and special. Splitting the Atom, Girl I love you, Psyche, Paradise Circus, all masterpieces that everybody should hear!

Karmacoma is a brilliant track. And fantastic use of it in the ‘Showgirls’ soundtrack!

The thing this song does so well is create this intensity. The music just builds and builds and builds and you end up overwhelmed in the best way

Good to see you getting round to this genre. And if you don’t like the name “Trip Hop”, you’re in good company; none of the people associated with it like being called that either! Now you’re here, you HAVE to react to some Tricky. He was one of the scene’s pioneers along with Portishead.

The TV show "House" introduced me to Massive Attack as they used the song "Teardrop" in the opening credits. I've been hooked ever since
