A Packrafting Expedition - Kayak Camping Wilson Creek pt 4

Фильм және анимация

Sometimes, you have to do something against the flow. Sometimes you must leave behind the traditional parameters and safeguards. It was time for something unsanctioned. Join us on our packrafting expedition that covers the entire length of the Wilson Creek in North Carolina. Our journey begins on high on the peaks of Grandfather Mountain where we lose a team member, hike into the night and find a terrific camp. We pick up the source of the Wilson Creek on the South face of Calloway Peak and then follow the river by foot until it becomes floatable by raft. We continue the journey down the river through the Class IV gorge section and beyond. Come enjoy some kayak camping in the form of packrafting! Find us at riverkingpete.com Thanks to Gatewood Brown for joining us on the adventure and lending his talents / @gatewoodbrown Thanks to Alpacka for the packrafts www.alpackaraft.com/rafting/
Much thanks to my friend Jason Lowe for the use of his amazing music. Jason is an authentic talent that has been carving out a career in music for over 12 years. The musical field is a grind for artists that refuse to bend to the digitization and commercialized distortion of their art. Yet he persists! Wow! from mountain top to foothills stream what a journey! I don't think you could have planned our meeting that day at the Johns and Wilson if you tried. It was a great day on the river for Kyle, myself and the rest of our group. We've been following the "Kings" for 2 years. Pete your videos have inspired us to step out and go on our own adventures. You are the great story teller and i am so glad your adventure was in my backyard this time. From my crew to yours Thanks! and we'll see you on the river.

    Really enjoyed this one!! Maybe because I paddle an inflatable kayak ( Tributary TomCat Solo ). Having watched you paddle your hardshells, it was interesting watching all of you handle the inflatables. Sometimes some of you looked like me, but mostly you all were paddling the way I want to. Would love a video about what you had to do differently with the inflatables. I have enjoyed your "teaching" kayaking to your friends, and have been inspired by their success. I think hearing about the differences and similarities would help many of us who are learning to paddle inflatables.

Ironically, immediately after watching last week's episode I went on a "practice hike" with my pack (for upcoming elk hunt) and the first Podcast I came across was about Packraft Hunting and Alpaca Rafts. Hey Pete, really enjoyed this series, along with all your other adventures. I live a little farther east than you but know the same rivers. Thanks for taking us along and educating while providing family-friendly entertainment! Looks like y'all were split between self bailers and packrafts with spray skirts on Wilson Creek and FB 9. Can you speak to the advantages/disadvantages of each or what each of you preferred? I've had an Alpacka for a few years but it has a standard floor and no skirt so I'd like to upgrade/retrofit it with one or the other. Thanks!

  • @RiverKingsKayak

    @RiverKingsKayak

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Vann! We all decided that for warm adventures, the self bailer with thigh straps would be the cat's meow. It was just so much easier to get in and out as well as being lighter. There were a few times the water piled up on Squirrel, but it drained fairly quickly. The skirted boats will provide the most optimal whitewater performance as no water will ever get in there. The down sides were a little more weight and when in lighter whitewater, it was just unnecessary. The skirted boats would be a better option in colder adventures as it will provide warmth. However, a drysuit would negate that dilemma. My preferred option would be a gnarwal self bailer with the whitewater thigh straps and seat back. Hope this helps!

    Ok I wanted to clear the air on some of the comments about the video. I appreciate those that spoke on my behalf, but Pete wasn't being a prick. It may have seemed that way to some, but far from the truth. Pete and myself have known each other for a long time and often go at it like brothers. Let me just say that Pete puts a lot of time and thought into our trips and his videos. The River Kings wouldnt be what it is today without his hard work and good attitude. I have literally been on the river and met a group of 15 strangers that said Pete was the reason they got into kayaking. So I'm sorry that the sarcasm left a bad impression, its all part of the fun. Pete didnt ask me to say anything. I hope this clears everything up and everyone will tune in for the next adventure.
