I literally am working with a kindergarten kid who is named Hermione and when I was doing assessment with her I casually asked her, “so… your mother really loves reading huh?” And she gave the most tortured sigh I’ve ever heard from a kindergartener and said “yes…” Also she has a classmate named Sherlock which is a whole other iceberg lol

fun fact, slytherin traits were basically all traits present in other houses just with synonyms that specifically had a negative connotation. These 11 year olds were all piled into a house that was filled with other kids from toxic households, told their best traits were these negative things, treated like the literal scum by other student's and teachers alike while they marinated in outdated mindsets shared by a bunch of not good people. And then we were supposed to believe that these kids CHOSE to side with the dark lord. Hats off to JKR honestly for legit convincing people that 11 years olds were inherently bad people.

That's called an opinion, not a fact. It's also a fictional series about a magical world, with magical people and creatures. 99% of movies, including Disney animated movies all have a bad guy/side. These kids also came from families that worshiped the dark lord when he was alive and still did. Get a grip, it's a fictional movie.

My problem with Harry Potter is that there is only four groups you can hypothetically sort yourself into, while the goated Percy Jackson chads have a seemingly infinite amount of gods they can identify themselves with, which is a lot more fun than the times in elementary school we had Harry Potter day and I always got raven claw and went “what the fuck is ravenclaw” but with Greek gods you already know what’s uppppp

The HP community definitely sexualised underage characters a lot in its history, but the grossness about actresses reaching age of consent I think is more of a tabloid thing than a fandom thing. They used to do it in the UK all the time but with 16 because its the legal age of consent here.

Ok so... my brain actually formed an association between 9/11 and Harry Potter, I believe because the main characters were one-year-old babies while Voldemort was terrorizing the wizarding world and I was one year old on 9/11. This was when I started reading the books circa 2007, around the same time I first learned about 9/11, so it was probably just "two things taking up a lot of space in my brain connected by extremely loose thread". I felt better when I thought that 7 year old me was the only person who associated 9/11 and Harry Potter. The fact that this was probably written by someone old enough to know better-

my sixth grade teacher ms baker made her whole curriculum and classroom themed around harry potter. there were four tables and each quarter shed rotate the tables around the room but wed be the same houses. we had a point system and read up to the fourth book as a classroom. she also....made us play quidditch....at some point... the golden snitch was a kid she deemed "the fastest" and yes he had the tennis ball groin and yes we used "brooms" my favorite month in her class was actually when we studied greek culture! we had a toga party and designed pots or something. then we went back to harry potter. she made us our own wands with us out of hot glue, gems, and various earth toned paints. she actually was an amazing teacher!! she taught many valuable life skills like how to manage money and made us live on a fake budget for a day. she encouraged each of us to learn and be creative. i was in honor choir, our school music, and also won first place in the science fair all with her encouragement. she was a great teacher but her and the other 6th grade teacher just so happened to be massive potterheads 😭😭

@@ArdillaINC It doesn't really interest me for one, but also I find that the hp fanbase can be really hostile and I just don't really want to get myself involved in that. Of course, the same thing can be said for the fandoms I *do* write for (genshin, bsd, etc.), but personally writing for the hp community is something that has never, and will never interest me. Another thing is that yes, while writing for the fandom does not directly give jk rowling anything, it still brings attention to it. I know the point about separating art from the artist, but rowling is just...such a bit ch that as a trans man I cannot bring myself to interact with her work in any way shape or form.

Both definitely have some toxicity (especially genshin because damn, do some people get worked up about which hot men you make kiss), but neither have had such a societal impact as hp did (though genshin is pretty large, and ships from both fandoms made it onto the top of ao3 this year). Also, a lot of the characters are underage, and even though I myself am a minor, the type of content I write is not something I'd particularly like to write about with underage characters

But that was instantly changed when Kurtis cut in, _not_ with ridicule (which would be mean), instead not only cutting her some slack, he actually gave it to her and put it in such a way that it seemed obvious. Like, yeah, she's happy, she's overcome with what seem to be good emotions and that's great for her. And that's true compassion, so props to Kurtis, genuinely, for leading by example. (And I know he's not going to see these posts about him; I'm not trying to get in his good favour or whatever. Unfortunately, a lot of people view fanfic and people who write it as “cringey”, which is why is kinda has a bad reputation. I think the problem is that really bad fanfic that actually _is_ cringey is sometimes shared on the internet and people make fun of it and assume that is what all fanfic is like. Then you also have the fact that books and movies like 50 Shades and After are both based off fanfics and they also have a reputation of being “cringey”. Long story short: I don’t think the general public is that focused or even aware of the good fanfiction that exists; they only really know about weirder and badly written fanfics and just assume all fanfic is cringey UPDATE/EDIT: here is something else just to prove my point. I just found out that City of Bones (the first book in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare) is allegedly, based off a HP fanfic. But that book, and the series as a whole, has been fairly successful, so hardly anyone talks about its origins.

And probably record it a few times to get it _just right._ Then they had to edit it. Then caption it. And post it as if we’re real. And also fanfiction can't hurt other people as it's not forced upon others. Usually ppl who create this stuff put warnings and actively protect it from those who can be uncomfortable. Even dark fanfiction has its role, I understood that even as a child, the only time I was affected by it is the first time I ever read a fanfic and I thought it was canon. It was for a silly cartoon called Angel's Friends and it had gore, death and pregnancy and I remember crying because I thought the character really died. Then I googled what fanfiction is. And, I mean, movies I saw as a much younger kid with my family present affected me much harder than any fanfiction could. And reality is what can actually actually hurt you. So ye, I think It should be much higher than harry potter names and actors harassment. Like, come on, can we care about real people a bit more???

The “sexualization “ part actually been something I’ve been pondering about because I was slightly younger than the characters as the movies were coming out and I always had a thing for Malfoy and at the time it was normal (Similar to our Twilight era). Of course in a normal timeline I would like adult Malfoy but since that hasn’t been made I now have to rely on ai art to still like the character. But I think this situation now that I;m in my 20s is very different than someone who likes a child character in ‘that way’ when you were already an adult. Children who grew up with these movies of course will still remember their crushes from back in the day and I think can be separated from actual pervs out there. Just an opinion on this little part discussed in the video

I’d place writing and reading fanfiction on the second level. Being a part of a community who reads fanfiction I’ve never encountered anyone who thinks the world of Harry Potter is real. It’s more of a way to experience the characters you know in different scenarios and a lot of them are really well written as well. But overall I’d say I’m level two. I even founded my high school’s quidditch team. We even participated in the national cup one year, but we only practiced once beforehand and got a shared last place.

Yes thank you, that’s the perfect way to say it. I started getting into the fandom a few years ago..2021 I believe. And I love it so much but even years into it now, it just keeps getting better because people keep making the fandom better on their own. I’m a Mauraders Stan as well and it is so cool to hear the way we can live in 2023 and still keep this fandom in the era of 1950s-90s while talking about the Harry Potter and Mauraders fandoms. I love that JK gave us this base idea of a plot and we have taken it and made a whole world out of the bases.

I've been following a specific HP fanfic writer for almost 10 years at this point and in my mind the series just belongs to them now. They are just churning out fics by the boat load every year and they have a super tight update schedule and the quality has greatly improved as they've gotten older too. 749 indivdual fics over 11 years and some of these are in the hundred thousands words in length!

Writing fanfiction can be cringe and weird but a lot of it is just young people expressing themselves creatively and learning writing skills, definitely not lower than naming a child after a fictional character
