A CLEAN Tank is a DEADLY Tank! ,

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The secret to a healthy, balanced aquarium is to duplicate, as much as possible, a natural environment. Father Fish explains the danger of creating an environment for fish that is sterile. Sterile environments are susceptible to severe infestation by dangerous pathogens. We see worse problems with pathogens in fish tanks than exist in nature. This is caused by failing to create genuinely balanced systems in which pathogens are kept in check.
Do not be afraid of natural aquariums but welcome them as the safest and healthiest possible method for keeping your precious fish.

I stumbled upon your channel about a year ago and realized that everything you say truly does make sense. The more we can make the tanks close to nature the better. The greatest achievement I thought I could get would be to have the fish breed in the tank, which never happened before. Now I have 4 generations Mollys in my tank, even 2 generations of Amano Shrimp in the same tank. And the best part is I don't even have to do anything anymore. No more cleaning, no more feeding, no more water changes, no more worries, no more stress. It all takes care of itself. You truly are the Father of Fish Keeping. Thank you so much for all the help and great advice that you give us.

My parents had a tank in the 70's. Nothing but live plants in it. No filtration systems, chemicals, etc. They had healthy, happy fish for years. I do ugly aquariums as well. I always laugh when visitors tell me my tank needs a good cleaning. But I use those occasions to teach others how fish should be kept.

@@vikingdeathstrike yeah no. Seriously. So I took botany in college I’m in med school and my real passion was marine biology and botany. I took up aquariums while IN undergrad and in botany, we never once talked about hydroponics, hell we didn’t even talk about the function of substrate and why it’s important. However our final was actually for us to build a fully functional terrarium without the basic foundational knowledge. I learned however the genetic makeup of plants, how photosynthesis works on the smallest of small level, all the things I learned in biology k101 and k102 was copied and pasted into our botany course at IU and it burned my ass because I wanted so bad to learn actually more about our biological atmosphere and how everything is related. Graduating top of my class I still to this day cannot tell you a conifer under a slide but somehow can explain the entire photosynthetic cycle. I’m saying the knowledge I have about plants and horticulture is not applicable to the real stuff like aquarium keeping, and things like that.

@Js2014.. I am SO sorry!!! Please accept my apology. I'll edit my comment as well. But not before apologizing to you. I really enjoyed reading your comment! I'm a kindred botanist and marine biologist. Somehow, fitting my DVM in as well, although I've long since gone to the "darkside" of a holistic minded approach since retiring. We as humans really do tend to take nature away from nature, as ff said. Be it in the animal world, marine, and most of the sciences. I could quite literally sit over a coffee and chat botany all day with you. So, well met!! Re my parents, it was rather a happy accident. They found some mud and put a ton of live plants into their aquarium. I could never understand as a kid/teen how their fish not only survived but thrived. Especially as I was just starting to become interested in them as well, but every book I'd buy to educate myself taught the fish killer way.. Well, long story short, I ended up with a marine life obsession and botany as well, lol. (And learned the hard way as a teen, of following what the books said as a junior hobbyist. A very happy Monday to you!! Edit And THANK YOU ever so much for your delightful read of a comment!😃 I totally understand where you are coming from. (If my device wasn't acting up on me, I'd share a few stories of when I used to work on seed farms using hydroponics and aquaculture just for fun and to hopefully be a comment you'd enjoy reading. If you ever get the chance or decide med school isn't for you, I can not recommend working in marine biology enough! Especially if whales and the like interest you. I have many amazing stories about working with whales. In the meantime, thank you also for choosing to work in medicine. I'd enjoy listening to more about your experiences in that as well! Feel free to share more if you have time and / or feel like it).

@@vikingdeathstrike internet trolls truly ruin genuine connection so I understand. But yes. My biology degree was not well rounded, I actually learned more about marine life via chemistry which may make sense but doesn’t really add up to me. It honestly makes sense thinking about all of this and how it compares to medicine. There’s a reason why people get sicker in the hospital right? It’s a sterile environment. So trying to take my small medical knowledge and apply it to this is actually working. Just feeling like I should know more, your parents must have been onto something because it’s so simple but brilliant. The idea behind a sterile environment vs replicating a natural environment and the benefits of containing that natural environment It can be applied to medicine and care so easily so looking at my tanks it makes sense why I feel like I’m always trying to solve a problem. When a patient has been admitted for too long another problem usually arises because the body’s central system is adapting to this environment that doesn’t have that natural environment humans need to thrive. This is directly what we are taught so it’s very neat to see this full circle and I have several alarms in my tank I need to fix at this point

I was new to fish keeping in January this year. I was making the mistakes of cleaning my tank to a point it became obsessive. I was even testing the water parameters three times a day!! I found your channel, and changed my substrate to dirt and sand, bought some plants, and I finally stopped being obsessive with water changes and checking the water. I simply watch their behavior and my plants. It’s only when I started doing this that my fish grew bigger, my plants started to thrive so much that I have to keep trimming them back! I have Java ferns spawning babies so fast when KZreadrs say it takes 6 months. I don’t understand why it takes them 6 months when every week, I see new babies on my Java fern leaves. I stopped using chemicals, and I let my otocinclus take care of algae (he does a good job and I think I’ll give him a raise for his hard work😂)

I was once in the sterile tank brigade, always had sick fish and dying plants. 12 months back I stopped the water changing, the substrate cleaning, and all the other that went along with it. I have now got a tank which cleans its self , no more sick fish and the tank don't smell when you lift the lid. I just let nature run my tank now and go along with what it wants to do, I found out this from your video's FF. I Thank You so much

I’ve been keeping a little 10 gallon tank for several years but this week I pulled out the plastic ornaments, put clean sand over my gravel and added plants. Also added some wood from my yard (had to tie down with a rock so it wouldn’t float) and although my plants seem a bit overwhelming I like it. Fish seem very happy. Now to start a resurrection jar and figure how to slowly add this to my aquarium.

You can try boil the wood. Wood naturally traps air pockets inside, which make it buoyant. Boiling helps drive out these air bubbles, allowing the wood to become denser and sink more easily.

I always thought it was odd to bring nature into the house, in the form of an aquarium, and then proceed to keep it as sterile as possible. Love your channel and your set ups.

Very true, I have been telling this for a long time , Some aquarium filters clean the water almost upto drinkable condition 😂, It’s all become a business, For example in AROWANA farms, they breed them in muddy ponds & say Arowanas should be kept in crystal clear water, 😂

I like you Father Fish, you're alright. What you speak of applies to a lot of systems where growing is important. Unfortunately, people like to have a blank slate or perfectly blank canvas to work their art, like a Petrie dish. There is an old saying; Nature abhors a vacuum. A perfectly blank canvass is the vacuum that attracts whatever comes along, good or bad.

If you've ever lived in an urban area where graffiti is a problem, you notice that walls painted white to cover graffiti rapidly get tagged again, yet, when the community comes together to paint some murals, they are more often than not, left alone by the vandals.

I am no expert on keeping Bettas. I went by what father fish recommended. I picked up a betta mid December 2023. I put it in a 5 gallon tank with a half inch of soil and one and a half inches of sand. Next I added lots of plants. Finally a heater set at 80 Fahrenheit. I feed Northfins Betta food,Fluval Betta pellets and finally small pieces of Australian Black Worms. I only top up the water, never do I perform a full water exchange. My fish is in excellent condition. Constantly building his bubble nest and touring his little kingdom.

Hi father Fish, I adopted your way of setting up my fish tank, and I've had it about 3 months maybe 4. Its going great, fish explore the environment, they hide, they feed from the leaves and roots. I love it. I only lost one fish , I had it probably 6 months from a previous tank with all the fake accessories. Maybe I overfed, but all the rest are alive and well. I have not ever tested the water, Its a smaller tank, so I usually change 20-50% of the water weekly. Depends on how dirty. I have a sponge filter which I have used them before I prefer them. Its raining today, hoping to collect some outside predator's to add to the tank, a Resurrections jar. I have all Neon types except 1 female Koi Betta, I would like to get a Alien female Betta, but so far have only seen males. I have 1 ground feeder , I don't remember what he is called, but he will stay on the 1 inch size. He's doing a good job. I was able to get a drift wood at PetSmart with a plant tied on it for 7.00 and already in fish water. Perfect, I love it. So thank you, Ill keep watching your channel. God Bless, bye for now , Barb

Like everyone else, I battled algae, green water, fish diseases, cyano. 25 years into the hobby you name it, I would have seen it all almost. Lost countless fish and also fought to keep fish alive. Until one day, I decided to let it be and not fight back. What the industry calls ugly is simply nature's work of putting things back into balance and without death there would be no life. I ran a tank for a year without water change, plants thrived and fishes were breeding. The best thing to do sometimes is to be patient and let the tank do its thing. Of course provided you give the tank the necessary input or you'll be stuck with an unsolved equation in the grand scheme of balance

In Belgium we now have to ask permission to the municipal office to buy any fish since 2023. If you don't have the paper you can't buy fish. Also it's illegal to take anything in the rivers, even stones or branches in the forest. Gold fish and Guppies are considered as domestical animals, so when you don't treat them correctly it's legaly as bad as bad treatment on a dog or a cat. The only problem is they don't control anything, you just ask the paper and bring it to the store, but at least the city knows you have fish in your home and can get data about the amount of fish fans there. Also it's illegal to put fish as gift at fairs when it was traditional here. We can't have wild animals in circus anymore (since 2014, so no more lion, tiger, elephant, just horses). Also we can't have hedgehogs. They also increased the skills of the stores, now they display the origin of the fish and the temperature of the water, last time I bought a cold water fish and a warm water one and the seller asked me if I knew what I was doing (I have 2 tanks), the main problem is the price, it's super expensive, 2.8€ per Guppy (cheapest fish of the stores), and about 15€ for each tiny plant.

@@FatherFish The problem is we are too many in a small territory, without control there will be no more nature, butterflies vanished in the last 10 years here, bees are getting very rare, even snails and slugs are getting rare in gardens, our local fish are strong because we have massive wastewater treatment plants, but there are no more bugs crashing on our cars at night, they are gone, nature can adapt but this is going too fast, I see the collapse, common species are getting extremly rare and young people don't understand what we lost, most people don't even think fish feel pain and most of them even think they aren't meat, they think fish are decoration, that's why they needed this law or people started to think gold fish lived a few weeks... We need a fatherfish here 😟
