I think Bollywood was popular in the USSR because Russian cinema ALSO loves musical sequences. So many classic films or tv shows my parents and I love have song-and-dance sequences out of nowhere and they’re awesome. It is similar in the sense that you can take the songs out of context, it’s not like a western musical. Anyway, I don’t know for sure if that’s why, but at least it would have been totally normal and possibly preferable for Soviet audiences to see a film with a big song and dance number or several, unlike a lot of western audiences.

This is LITERALLY exactly what I was looking for. Pre COVID the woman that used to thread my eyebrows was Indian and would always have Bollywood movies playing. I wanted to start watching Bollywood movies but didn’t know where to start. I love cheesy over the top movies so I’m definitely going to watch everything on the “grain of salt” list. Thank you!

as someone that was literally raised on bollywood, i find white people's bollywood opinions so intriguing. I wouldn't have expected all of these takes, but i don't necessarily disagree? I always thought bollywood also drove away a lot of people that don't speak the language just off of how intent on double meaning bollywood is. Like, the subtitles will say 'and that's why i never loved you', but actually the exact words he chose to say it could also be interpreted as a call back to an earlier line. If you don't mind horror movies, and want a good introduction into regional indian cinema, watch the many iterations of Manichitratazhu. It's a really good malayalam horror movie that was then remade in a bunch of other languages. All the iterations are really different, so they give you a good vibe of the quirks and characteristics of each film industry.

I so agree about the language thing! lots of times when I'm watching Hindi movies, especially comedies, a lot of the jokes will rely on Hindi wordplay. it's actually kind of fun to see whether the subtitles will try to literally translate wordplay or try to adapt it for English. I also think in general, unfortunately many native English speakers aren't very into reading subtitles, which might drive them away from Bollywood. thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely check it out. I'd love to watch some Malayalam movies.

I grew up with immigrant Indian parents, so Bollywood was like our favourite pastime haha. I only speak a bit of Tamil and Hindi (can understand a lot more) so I’ve always been in the middle here, growing up in Canada. Having my mother be a literal translator was a huge help for me as a kid. This also made me always have subtitles on haha. Anyway, it makes me happy to see other people enjoy it as much as I did. That’s why I was so happy to see this video, although I was 9 months late 😅

So when I was a lot younger my mom and sister went to this Indian run goods store, and the gentleman who owned it also rented out Bollywood films. He recommended mohabatien to us. All I knew about Bollywood films as a kid was that they had song and dance numbers and I loved musicals so I was desperate the whole film for the music and dancing to start. We all loved that film, and would go back to his store to rent others (mostly starring shah rukh khan because my mom fell in love with him 🤪)

Kal Ho Naa Ho was my bollywood origin story too! We were learning about Hinduism in social studies in like sophomore year of hs and had a free day, an Indian classmate asked if they could bring it in so we watched it LOL. amazing. the theme song basically became a meme and our class would hum or sing it until graduation 🥲 I’ve been wanting to get more into Bollywood so thanks for this video! 👍 Only one I’m surprised not to see is Bajirao Mastani! Especially for anyone interested in history or historical fashion, what a beautiful movie. And so sad! I loved it, I listen to the songs all the time.

Om Shanti Om and Devdas were my introduction to Bollywood when they played back to back on the Australian special broadcasting service late at night when I was like 11 and had a fantastic flu. Aishwarya Rai was a bit of a queer awakening for me 😂 For me it’s always, always the music, but I’ll definitely try some of the Arthouse films you suggested, especially the Lunchbox

This reminded me of my middle school friend who tried to get me into watching Bollywood movies and listen to the music. I tried to get her into American Pop and Rock music and films, funnily enough neither of us were familiar with either culture but had a fascination with it. I recognised some of the classics you recommended, and just wanted to say your video format is very entertaining and informative, love your channel. Hope more people would simply indulge in media that isn"t inherently connected to their own Country.

I got my first introduction to bollywood through a random world dance competition that I saw on tv when I was in early high school. There were two performances, a duo pair and a group of young dancers, dancing to Dola re Dola from Devdas and Nagada Nagada from Jab We Met, respectively. The music was so different from what I was used to and so lively that I grew to love it. There are some songs that I used to listen to on Itunes that I wasn't able to get again and I miss those songs, but I still remember the smiles that those songs brought me whenever I would listen to them.

I'm South East Asian American, 1st Gen, and Indian films, especially the more commercial Bollywood films, were/are really popular with women (and queer kids) in our community starting in the 1980s/1990s. My gateway film was SRK's first feature film, "Deewana". 😂 That movie holds such a special place in my heart. I saw it when I was like 4. The soundtrack is bomb, movie super dramatic, young SRK is a delight, and I've always adored Divya Bharta. Though "Mujhse Dosti Karoge" is not like, one of the greats, it's probably one of the movies I've watched the most (I agree it gets a bad rep!) 😂 I loved the music, the letters/emails and secrets and repressed feelings was frustratingly fun, and I also really enjoyed Hrithik Roshan and Rani Mukerji's chemistry!

listen this video has convinced me to start my bollywood journey officially (i don't count the movies i have seen in passing dubbed in arabic growing up) andi will come back to comment here every time i watch a new one from the list - last week i watched kal ho naa ho, and i could not stop thinking about it for 2 days, mainly the fact that this could've been solved by a throuple lmao, but yeah no, it was so good, i love a manic pixie drem boy - today i watched kuch kuch hota hai, and i can't get over how pretty tina and anjeli are, like who allowed this? also could've been solved by a throuple, or even better, anjeli and tina without rahul lmao. the vibes were immaculate the whole time though, loved it

okay, don't know why i took an apparent 9 month break before watching another movie from this list, but i finally watched kabhi khushi kabhi gham. like literally i just finished it a minute ago and I'm still crying. - I'm kinda obsessed with rain being in it but like, for literally no reason. i mean she was still super pretty, - i kept dying at pooja, i love her, she's so hilarious, like because of the video i was quoting her lines before she even said them lmao - the sweater game in this movie is kinda immaculate i love it. also i know 2000s fashion is coming back, but most of it ain't my style, but rohan had some solid looks in there, his all black outfit when he first gets to London, i want it, his orange sweater outfit too, like give me! - I've only seen ddlj and kkhh with kajol and srk, so i know it's not a lot but i really liked them in this one. first off they skewed a bit older, i never got to see them act as an actual married couple before that you could feel had been together for years and loved each other, and i loved that side of them. also, the song/dream sequence where they fall in love and all that, it was kinda spicy! like for the genre, i was like okay am i allowed to watch this? like i am looking respectfully - for some reason i thought i wouldn't like this one based on the premise but turns out it's kinda my fave?

I've discussed diegesis on this channel before, that's not quite what I was getting at. there are diegetic and non-diegetic musicals in both Hollywood and Bollywood, I was more trying to describe the stylistic differences in how the songs affect the story and structure of films. it's hard to discuss because I don't think a lot of film scholars care enough to talk about it 😭

hi, a soviet kid here. i /grew up/ on hindu films. and i still love them to this day. my all time favourite one is Seeta Aur Geeta. i don't really know where it stands in the classic/good hindu film, but i love it a lot. there is another film i remember vividly from my childhood but don't remember the name of. all i remember is that it had this scene of a girl having to dance to keep her man alive cause he was being help captive and as long as she should dance they wouldn't kill him. and then they start throwing bottles so they would break and she would have to fance on glass and then they even start shooting at her feet. literally the only thing i remember from the film but man did it stick with me. i would also like to mention my guilty pleasure [i don't love the term but i don't know how else to describe it] non-indian trying to be bollywood films like Bride and Prejudice and The Mistress of Spices made by india together with us and uk. i know it probably makes me a fake bollywood fan but i don't know what to tell you, man. i love them

Love this video Jane! I’m not Indian but do have South Asian ancestry as well as European. Living and growing up here in NYC I’ve gotten to see Bollywood movies in theaters all the time. Pretty much every film you mentioned are on my favorite or absolute favorite lists and also some of the films are the same films I recommended to ppl who wanted to get into Hindi movies. Muhjse Dosti Karoge wasn’t a hit in India due to being released very close with Devdas at the time. It definitely has become a cult film and has always been super popular with the Indo-Caribbean community. Bollywood often gets a bad rep and thank you for giving the facts! It’s a movie/entertainment industry not a genre of films lol and it’s not all musicals or sappy romantic dramas. It has bit of everything.

It's a Mira Nair film, so it has the same arthouse style she usually does, but it's also really self referential to other Bollywood movies and tropes, and kind of does it's own commentary on it, mostly through it's technical style. It's basically a family wedding film, that focuses on all the tensions that arise when a big family all get together from around the world. I think you would really enjoy it!

I’m gonna watch all of these (if I can find them streaming lol)! I wonder what the movie I saw ages ago about a historical (mythical….?) imperial couple was called. I think it was a Bollywood movie but now that I know the proper definition of Bollywood, I’m not sure… It had beautiful music, gorgeous actors/actresses, and great dancing, but that definitely doesn’t help narrow it down. Also, if you like homoeroticism and aren’t opposed to campiness, I feel like you’d enjoy Takarazuka!

"Makkhi" is my husband and I favorite movie. Its about this sweet romantic guy who falls in love with a girl, then gets brutally murdered by a mobster that also wants the girl...then gets reincarnated as a fly set on revenge. It is the most insane amazing movie I have ever seen. I honestly don't know if its Bollywood or not, there is a musical number?

@@jane-mulcahy yes the shows that generally play on tv are pretty hard to find with subtitles, I think some Netflix/Amazon prime shows do have them but they aren’t generally the ones made for a tv audience That aside I love your view point and analysis of Hindi movies, I would love to see more of it! Ps: you should definitely watch the movie, it’s got the perfect vibe for late night watching with popcorn
