1. Pain ceiling (You are capable of more than what you think, expand the cave) 2. Rest is key 3. Know when to quit 4. The confident mind (A knowledge of what one is capable of doing - Confidence) a. Bring in constructive memories from the past b. Be careful about the stories you tell yourself about the present (A belief about yourself) c. How do you think about the future? (Become the director of those short films) 5. Trials develop strength (You're not going to improve by doing things that are easy) 6. Calmness brings triumph (Like catching a feather, ego is an enemy) 7. The main thing (Keep the main thing the main thing, find a role that truly fulfils you) 8. Perfection is the enemy of the good 9. You aren't what you do (Decouple who you are from what you do)
The 20 hour plus races I’ve done are immensely cleansing. The struggle against your mind, against your demons becomes very real. Your body hurts, you are doubting yourself, your power to lie to yourself is removed. You are left in a raw, primal state… The world, for better or worse, is opened to you. Pain brings life to your struggle.

It took me almost a decade to complete my first 100 mile race and it was a test of mental and physical fortitude
I have this mantra with me. Let logic be with me; Reasoning with my actions; Temperance with my emotions; And wisdom with my nature. I know that I'm still in the process of acquiring this, but I also do believe that being confident by knowing my capacity will be able for me to attain this. Memento Mori people. 💜
“Confidence is a knowledge of what one is capable of doing.” Thanks for this
Had a rough day and immediately came to your channel for a gem. I was not disappointed.
Impressed to see how many female athletes were interviewed and incorporated into this video. Well done.
Keep 'em coming Ryan KEEP EM COMING!!
This just did a lot for me - thank you very much! I strained a muscle in my leg and I can't run at the moment, which is really frustrating. But Stoicism is a great way to deal with that situation. Hard to put into actual practice, but videos like this help A LOT. Especially Mr. Zinsser's points really speak to me.

yeah, me too... taking forever to heal... (my attitude too) ;)
This is probably the best video on the channel so far, and that’s saying a lot. Great work.
tip for athletes, dont run at 4AM in a sketchy area by yourself without being able to protect yourself
Hooray , a longer vid again instead of those silly shorts.. GREAT vid this. SO helpful and !! @ryan more vids on the books that you read please , a bit longer per book. Love and Light from Europe , thanks for all the great work you are doing Ryan (and team). 💞
I needed these messages right this very moment in my life. Thanks, Ryan!
Training has given me what I want in life ,55 yrs now ,want to be crazy fit in my 60 s it’s truly amazing what the body can do with practice
Amazing video. Thank you Ryan for all that you do!
That mountain biker was super gorgeous.
Thank you for what you do Ryan. You sure do help a lot of people. Keep it coming 😎🤙🏻
This was an amazing video and I loved all the different clips and advice-thank you!
Great clips! There were such great gems here. Stoicism really seems to lend itself to ultrarunning. Hours spent in your head, talking yourself through excuses and worries, dismissing what you can't control, being in the moment, taking each mile as it comes and managing your mind, body, and equipment in the best way each mile for the best possible outcome. I need to add some sayings from the great stoics to my list of mantras to help get me through.
As a student athlete who’s struggling right now I really needed this. Thanks Ryan.
You're so inspiring, Ryan. I love your energy.
Thank you Ryan
This shows that strongest mindset are of and we can inherit that by adding physical activities and challenges to become the best version of ourself. Thanks ryan for this. this helped me clearing the negative thoughts about me. love from india.
Amazing … good job Ryan ❤️
1:24 -- I’m hearing this idea of pain cave and felt inspired to say that PAIN is a signal of the body that I’ve heard defined as ‘pay attention, integrate now’…is pushing the body that far a kind thing? I might be on the opposite side--but that’s alarming!
This is a fantastic video. I love the clips from the Performance Psychologists. They provided so much helpful information. I’m a psychotherapist. I def plan to share this video with friends, fam, and clients.
How have you not got 1M subs yet! Great video... it's never just one thing - there's so much to stitch together to get a winning mind set because winning is not a flat, 2D concept. Thanks for the inspiration to get better at my goals, even a 'senior' age person should keep pushing!
Awesome!!

Thank you
Great meditation to start the day=]
Thank you.
Constructive memories good point
Love this! Looks like you might be ready to register for an ultra my man 😉
These videos are fantastic insights with a lot of value. I just wish there was no background music, it's pretty distracting. Or at least turn it down way more.
Are we going to just ignore the "pain cave"? Lol. She's an inspiring person by all accounts but my inner child could not help but chuckle 😂. Keep up the great content man it's a great way to start the day!
Ultramarathoner myself, when I saw the first shot of Courtney and the idea of Pain Cave, you bought me totally. Having been a Daily Stoic follower for years, this video is in my TOP 3. Thanks!
Great video. Who is the man in the middle around the 7-8 min mark?

Courtney is a compete bad ass from another planet 🤙
Your right foot while running is out-toeing could lead to knee issues. It be worth trying to strengthen your arch and foot all together for the longevity of your joints and lessen the chance of injuries. 🤷♂️👍👍👍👍😎
Idk why but I would love to see Ryan have an interview with Mike Tyson. I think that would make for an interesting discussion
when you NEED this Ad Vice - you never go anywhere ever
My mind blown when I realize we live in the same city. 🤯🤯
Ryan, top level sprinters like Bolt are putting in hours each day to to find at extra .01 of a second on the track doing reps, drills, technique, starts, activation and in the gym doing weights, plyo's and at home with nutrition, reviewing race videos, and rest.
Meditation is physical?
What I noticed about Tom Brady and Floyd Mayweather. They don’t drink.

@@tamas1235 i can understand, but not all people catch the important line in the flow. Even i really need subtitles because - 1) English is my third language, 2) i mostly listen on mute because I have my small kids sleeping beside me .
I love working out under bridges 💪🏻 lol jk… might not want to work out under bridges too often… most of Americas bridges aren’t structurally rated very well and are behind on maintenance…

🤣 😂 yet, so true...
Just a suggestion, I'd rather have seen the athletes train and run instead of you training and running. You get enough facetime when we see you writing and signing the books and interviewing the athletes, so I feel the shots of you exercising are overkill
The idea of controlling your inner monologue is where this falls apart for me. It can't be controlled. We evolved to lean negative. You have to learn to persevere DESPITE that negative inner monologue that we all experience sometimes. Just like you can't stop a trash talker. Your brain is the ultimate trash talker.
Bro I very much appreciate all of your stuff. But please don't use a stamp when you autograph a book. That's the same as not signing it. A lot of us out here care about that kinda thing. I know it probably is a pain, but I also know a lot of people would really appreciate it. Keep up the good work 👍 just get rid of the stamp that ruins every book you put it in.
