Living Like A Stoic For 30 Days

The Stoics focused on doing the real work-on deeds, not just words.
They wouldn’t want you to settle for letting yourself off the hook, for simply indulging in some symbolic gesture or tiny consolation. They’d want you to do the real, uncomfortable work on yourself, or on the world around you.
In this video Ryan Holiday takes you through a month in his life as he tries to live up to this philosophy.

My sister died on the 25th, (little under 2 weeks ago), then Sunday the daily stoic KZread channel found me. It’s been extremely helpful. I live in Austin and we had to drive to Lufkin which means driving through The town where the painted porch is located. Seemed like too much of a coincidence to not stop by. It’s crazy how life works. I was already super into Self help but stoicism feels like it found me. Not sure the point of my writing this lol, but thank you for the daily stoic and I’ll look into these books you recommended for loss. Strangely another coincidence.

It’s easy to overcommit. I can so relate to this. This is a reason why I often get burnt out. Problem was in me => overcommitting. Being afraid to say no. Being afraid to disappoint others. Being afraid for the relationship to go the wrong way by me saying no.

I have to read a lot for school. I find printing out the material, even though it is wasteful of paper, makes it easier because unlike reading electronic files, it's harder to be distracted with dead trees. They are also more convenient because they don't need to boot up, have their batteries charged, or need replaced if dropped. Going somewhere with a stack of papers and a notepad, and just reading.

So sorry for your loss. I'm amazed at the history ancestors have seen. I was just listening to a talk by a man who remembered talking to his grandparents who were the children of slaves. My mom was an army nurse in Vietnam and she passed last year (not COVID). May we always remember that every moment is the passing of history.

I'm unsure why I haven't followed the stoic path until it was too late. Emotion seeped into my management style and I paid the ultimate price. Then, I stumbled upon a quote on instagram from the Daily Stoic... and I latched on. It's the last stage of my life, and I have squandered so much by being undisciplined, giving in to temptations, and poor decision making that can only be contributed to being unfocused and undisciplined. I'm not really worried about starting over. I've always seem to be quite the "boot-strapper" (much to OAC's chagrin), but I'm reading Marcus A., watching YOUR videos, and trying to unlearn and melt down the bad-habits I have forged into my very being. Thank you for sharing this... and I'm on board. (Also an author (fiction)) and trying to not stress and stay focused on the task at hand- starting over at 60. This helps. Thank you! (Subscribed and activated notifications!).

I'd be curious of stoicism from the perspective of someone in Ukraine in a Fox hole for months and lost most everything. Enjoy yr run and travels, u r the man walking the talk. You regurgitate books many of us have already read, videos we have already seen no more no less, but does that make it stoic?

With regards to a certain predator named Harvey Milk: He used to "befriend" under age boys before "enjoying" their company. Apparently, when they started sprouting a little too much in the way of chest and pubic hair, he would end the relationship. Two of them committed suicide after he dropped them. Troubling, but then I guess more than one stoic had very similar proclivities.

Justice is not a compound word. There is no such thing as economic justice, racial justice, environmental justice - there is only justice. Compound justice does not reduce injustice, it simply shifts it to a different group. If we want justice, it should be for the purpose of reducing injustice, not shifting injustice to someone else.

You need to stop tatooing yourself with sayings or you'll end up looking like a newspaper article. Meditations, meditate, stillness, silence, stop, slow down, let the mud settle, quiet, apply the brakes, feel your hearth beat, become aware of the air entering your nose and follow it into your lungs and exhale again, become more present, as you become more and more quiet and still, and as you are reading these words become aware of the seer surrounding your body that is watching the person reading these words on the screen. Meditations.
