$9,000 CASH HOUSE - Demolition & Construction - #3

NEW CHANNEL- / @commoncents8950
Construction begins along with a little demolition in this video. I connect the two bedrooms with a new doorway then relocate the bathroom wall out into the bedroom just a bit. This makes for a heck of a bathroom and leaves the back bedroom small, but still "normal" for a house like this. As you can see, this renovation is getting more involved than I mentioned, but that's the beauty of my videos, you get more than I promise.....I always dive in more than I expect but how else would you convince yourself to take on a project like this. I hope you enjoy the video, give it a thumbs up and let me know your advice on what to do next, I've been working on the house since this was filmed but there is still plenty to comment on that I could benefit from. Also, check out my new channel, the link is first in this description. Thanks for watching.

Homemade Home I was actually so inspired by this inadvertent advice because I ALWAYS try to pre-plan everything to the extent that it IS discouraging and counterproductive. Unless you’re planning a work of civic engineering, underestimating makes a lot of sense! (As long as you can go the distance once reality sets in I guess...)

That is one of the things I like most about this guy..... He makes initial plans but then is never hesitant to change direction mid-strude and do it differently than he originally planned. It is called flexibility and being able to look at things in big picture mode. Good stuff.....

There is a lot you need to know to remodel a house. Removing the wrong beam or cutting through the wrong stud or removing the wrong wall could compromise the entire structure of the house. You also need to be licensed for any electrical plumbing or other work you do. On top of that, if you don't have the right permits the government can come back and make you tear out everything you have done. On top of that, if you buy a house to renovate and they made any unpermitted additions, they government can make you tear out all of that too. In addition, if any changes you make that cause structural problems that injure someone who buys the house from you, you become legally liable for that too.

Yeah, stuff like the exterior even hits "pros". My wife and I bought a rent house, and hired a remodeling company to do most of the work. There was a good-sized laundry room with a 30x68 exterior door opening into the back yard, but the old door was shot and most of the drywall was also torn up. The remodeling crew chief suggested that we wall that off to save money. I stupidly okayed it. BUT - the interior door was a 24x68, meaning you can't get a washer or dryer into it. In the meantime, the house got leased, so I had one weekend to go and strip siding, cut out the drywall on the inside, and install a new exterior door then get it trimmed and painted before the tenants arrived. Got it done, but it was a close call.

Like others said, kudos on the respirator, but PLEASE wear safety goggles and ear protection too, a good pair of glasses don't feel like you are wearing anything...and it takes just seconds to put in those foam earplugs. One thing that will help you with all that drywall dust is get yourself a couple of exhaust fans and place one pulling air in and the other exhausting air out. You can also "filter" the air by buying a couple of hvac furnace filters and taping them to the back of each fan. That way you will have a constant flow of fresh air into the house. You can also take a cheap spray bottle filled with water and wet the drywall where you are going to cut it and that will help keep the drywall dust down. Keep up the good work!

  • @leeluv96

Yes I did the trick with the furnace filters on the back of a fan and placed it in the basement. It totally cleared the are of dust and helped to keep the moisture/mildew in check. I just let it run day and night for a few days.

I love your channels and your videos. One thing I admire about you is that you've amassed so much experience building and rebuilding houses that you no longer see houses as a "home" - unchanging and full of memories and restrictions. You see houses for what they are: a collection of LEGO-like building blocks that can be replaced and reconfigured, and you've got the skills to make it happen. The possibilities are nearly endless. I think you mentioned this in one of your recent videos.

Now that I find myself as old as my grandfather was when he used to call us younguns whippersnapper....I hesitate to add my two cents to the mass of comments. But as a builder for more than fifty years, two things stood out for me...one is the fact of asbestos in almost all old building products--stucco, linoleum, various dry boards, etc. If you are unsure, just keep dusty clothing out of the house and launder separately.....Lots of wives bore the brunt of their husbands job.Alarmist? ..be safe, not sorry. The second thing I noticed was more of a question...if the ceiling joists are so inadequate, can you be assured of jacking on the floor joists? Carry on, good luck!

Here's just a thought - that remodeled bathroom - have you considered switching the vanity for the toilet? It would put the toilet out view from both bedrooms if their doors were open - maybe reverse the swing (hinge side) of the back bedroom bathroom door, it would hide the toilet even better.. It would also put your sink closer to its linens in the new closet. Great work, man!

I hated wearing eye protection glasses until I bought a good pair. Cheap ones would fog up, weren’t clear etc. I bought some dewalt ones and I love them! Get some eye protection!

Do you ever worry about the possibility of asbestos when you’re demo’ing older homes? When you were cutting the ceiling and the whole room filled with dust it made me wonder if you did any testing on the homes before you dig in? Love the channel, keep up the awesome work.

Pretty sure that is something he really checks before he buys a house and passes on it if there is asbestos.

I'm not sure about the US, but asbestos was super common in scallop-style stucco ceilings up here in Canada. Pretty much, if it was built before around 1975, the ceiling has asbestos in it. That dust mask is decent, but not good enough for that type of danger.

Loving this series. Home improvement shows (some even in Texas) are very careful to script one dramatic “who’d a thunk it” moment per build; they give you no idea of the expanding web of problems jack-leggery can get you.
