In this episode, I open up the doorway a bit between the kitchen and dining room. The working portion of this video is short. Next up I'm starting plumbing and did not want to mix this with that so I took this opportunity to address some thoughts and questions viewers have brought up as well as go over my plans for the renovation. Don't want to hear the talking, no problem, skip out after the door is done. Thank you for your time, looking forward to the next one.

And the reality is that renters will enjoy 'making it work.' Part of the fun of a rental are the little quirks and finding creative ways to make a rental feel like home. I will take a quirky, clean, cool old house over an 'HGTV' apartment any day and twice on Sunday.

"Not a slum Lord"...putting fewer cabinets in the kitchen is totally acceptable for a rental. If the tenants need to buy some selves or something for organization, it cost much less than cabinets, and can be found 2nd hand. Rent control and keeping prices reasonable is important, especially in rural areas. It looks like you have rental properties that are appropriate to the area. Sometimes we forget that not all parts of the country are wealthy and not all families can afford a fancy house (rental or otherwise). Solid, dependable affordable housing is important. On another note, I appreciate the amount of actual work you show in a house, as it helps me determine what are projects that I can do, and what is definitely out of my skill set. Thanks again.

I agree. We bought a house with a smaller kitchen and made do with fewer cabinets. We didn't have a real designated pantry and bought a cabinet for food storage and for our breakfast area a rolling cart for a toaster oven. It worked out great. No complaints.

I found the chapters in kzread.infoUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up. I especially found this Ryan’s Shed Plans to be of great use when it came to building the roof. I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this Ryan’s Shed Plans.
We love your style! It's very hard to get your 94 year mother to understand that HGTV actually does have crews that come in when cameras are off and they don't do it in 24 hrs. Especially when it's people who don't have a clue! 🤣

some old house are more sturdy than the new ones.
Hey, I live in France and about wood framed houses (maison ossature bois in French) you're actually so right. Our tough houses ( masonry) are tricky to renovate regarding man strength and structurarly it requires heavy heavy duty sometimes just to add a door, a window or a sliding door. Wood houses are on the rise it is true in France. They're not really cheaper since we don't havea lot a wood resources. But they provide flexibility regarding the floor plan and the possible additons of the house (for instance, adding a bedroom on the side of the house). Workload is really easier to manage with wood than masonry. Also, wood provides better eco (heat) performances but for sure far more sound issues (cracking and sound passing from a room to another) and some people fear the wood to rotten and by doing so, making the house to collapse. Anyway, I bought a house in Normandy which was a pig house transformed onto a house but its core is compacted dirt with cereals... Anyway if I'd build one, I'd choose wood for sure. Love your videos. Love the music. Love your Texan accent. Love the content. Love the answers given to our questions either in the comments or in your videos. Take care and love this house too, great potential. 👋
I love your videos so much more than the HGTV format. It’s nice seeing what renovations ACTUALLY look like. You’re doing great, don’t change a thing 😊
That doorway is perfect because you have air and light flow but you can still get a baby/pet gate up easily for safety.👍
As long as it's getting the job done I think you should keep it going.

I've been binge watching your videos. My dad used to be a contractor who built new houses before the market crashed in 2008. I remember so many summer days going out to "help" him and his friends working on a house. He built the house I spent several years of my life in before it was foreclosed on from that market crash again in 08. Anyway... I've been watching your videos lately because it reminds me of hanging around his builds when I younger. Times have been tough for my family recently and things aren't like how they were. These videos bring me back. Seeing all the chunks of wood, insulation, and tools laying around everywhere makes me smile because that's what I grew up in. Thank you for putting the time and effort into all this. I appreciate it so much and will continue to watch.

Long term practicality always wins....
There is a middle ground between one wall of cabinets and HGTV. It's already a small kitchen. Please do more cabinets than you're suggesting. You don't have to buy expensive corner cabinets. You could do a false base cabinet next to the stove and run the counter top all the way to the corner for extra work space. You could run uppers all along the long wall & just have a vent hood above the stove with no upper cabinet there. Kitchens don't need to be glamorous or TV worthy, but they do need to be functional. Also, do you ever get your wife's input for a female perspective?
Your videos are great just the way they are, so done to earth.I love watching the before and after videos of your houses.

dpeagles In England a lot of houses actually are stone because in certain parts of the country your house has to be built out of a specific stone in order to fit in with the local aesthetic. My house is made of red brick which is a common building material here in the UK
@RealConstructor
5 жыл бұрын
dpeagles In my country, The Netherlands, we have stone walls in most of our freestanding houses. No concrete (row houses have concrete parting walls). Our houses have cavity walls, the outer walls in masonry with brick/stone and the inner wall is the load baring wall (On these walls rest the concrete floors), also masonry mostly sand-lime brick or clinkers. The cavity space in between is for insulation. Our country has almost no seismic activity. Only the northern part a bit because of extensive gas extraction, so manmade, not natural. Also wood (on the outside) is not the best building material in our climate. So stacking stones/bricks is often chosen to be the best, most durable solution. Good protection against fierce winds and torrential rain, frost and heat. That’s also why we often have ceramic roof tiles on a pitched roof, instead of wood, asphalt or bitumen shingles like in the US. Every country it’s own building style.
Your work is why so many people watch. Don't change your style, it works and we look forward to your homes and how they come together.

If you leave the kitchen wall empty your Renters will have options on how they use and decorate the space. They could have a small table for an 'eat in' kitchen, an armoire or shelves for storage or an island work area. Bottom cabinets create challenges for older or disabled people. A 'free standing' cabinet provides more storage and easier access. It is also more typical of a kitchen in an old farm house.
I always take great pleasure in seeing sparks while sawing through something.
