I really like how Volition is portrayed in Elysium. For most visual novels, this trait is often overlooked because common sense either flies out the window or is the key to victory. Here it's shown to be like a shitty superpower. In the description, it's described as a party pooper and it's only cool for Sane People. In Harry's context as an alchoholic suicidal, it's almost as if it would *hold him back* from exercising his superstar cop abilities. And everyone else who is saner seems to not solve cases as well as you. But look at Volition! It's always there. Mingling with the other voices. Not subjugating but helping soothe them, interpret for them and reading them for you. Volition will call out your other voices when they get too afraid or instinctual. That voice was with Harry even when he was high and drunk and crazy. It's the real superpower that helped him stay alive through heartbreak and all the traumatic crime he witnessed. I also really like how Volition isn't written as ultra-competent either. He's like a very understanding and compassionate brother. But his words always have a tinge of Harry's own self-deprecation as well. He never really gives absolute positives unless he's very sure of it. He's realistic but not sociopathically logical. He's... sober. I love the writing on this guy so much. He's such a good embodiment of how you might dismiss or look at your own very real emotional and logical fortitude when you're ill or want to be ill.

Try to see yourself outside of the unconfortable situation you are currently experiencing, and imagine yourself consoling a friend that is experiencing your exact situation, then write the thoughts, the conversation, that you would have to reassure your friend hat everything is ok and that in the end he would be ok. Then read the text you wrote. Volition is inside all of us, the world is very complex and complicated, and existed even before we where here, with our dreams and desires, so we are going to be dissapointed many times in our lives, but we are strong, and even though all around us we see strangers, we are not alone, and we can do this, god speed.

I'm a psychologist in training and would like to use these lines as a source of inspiration to reassure patients who struggle through it. The Volition scripts are absolutely on-point regarding a therapeutic journey. It happens so often that people give up, even after doing tremendous work. I remember when in-game, you develop a thought, I think sobriety, and the result is "this is how normal people are". I remember how that hit me like a brick wall. People have the capacity to work through absolute hell, absolute bottom, claw their way up to the surface just to be met with the realization that many others never had to struggle like that in the first place. That this amount of intense pain, dedication and will-power puts others in positions of power. Meanwhile, "all" it did for you was reset you to the normal, default position. And yet, without that sacrifice, you would never leave that dark place. Now, you have opportunities like you would never have had. So, it's just a bit further now. It is possible, because *time* is possible.

Well here is what my volition says "Its not your fault, capitalism and the world is cruel. But things will get better, its the general course of human history, trial and error, self improving. The old ways of doing things will die and we will be one step further in a better direction. IF you want to see that better future, if YOU want the story to continue fight like hell. Stop arguing with idiots on the internet, you have nothing to prove to them, they will only further bring you down. Stop playing Noita and Rimworld all day, yes its fun I will admit but you aren't going anywhere with this, you can put it down for a couple hours, you can already do that NOW. If you can't do this for you, do this for the people you care about, do it for the world, do it to spite the evil in this world, tap into your inner humanity and get up. You aren't worthless, you are alive aren't you, that is something and value is a subjective measure anyways, to be worthless to the systems that grind your soul into a paste is an incredibly freeing experience, it means you are winning and they are losing even by a small fracture. Let the bourgeois starve, help your fellow working folks, help them see the world you see and keep marching forward, that is all we can do we cannot afford to stand idlily by." Hope it helps.

Do you know what the best part of Voition is? It is with us. With all of us. In the brain of each of us, in a lobe somewhere semantic and scientific, and existing at the same time, is Volition. You may not acknowldge it, or recognize it, bu it is there. Whispering to us, almost like a Guardian Angel, but it is no supernatural, nor otherworldly. It is a part of us, just like a shadow, and just like a shadow, it can never be eradicated nor erased, not even in darkness. We always talk about the devils on our shoulders as a collective and conscious speices and society. I believe it is high time we talked and understood these angels on our shoulders. Because even the most suicidal of us can dream, and even the worst of us have these. Volition.

This curtain can keep you blind to what matters and what REAL reality is. "You're not an idiot, You're a detective and a detectives work is hard. You made it this far, and its a bit further. 15 seconds in & my Electrochemistry is screaming at me to take something, TAKE ANYTHING, to stop feeling the way I do. When your life is poised to go down the same path as Harry's: you can't help but feel like there's no point to even TRYING anymore. The aspect of Volition's quotes that hurts the most is the fact that they're ALL reminders that there are others out there rooting for you... Regardless of whether or not they CAN help you, other people WANT to help you... And man... I don't care about hurting myself, but people who care about me? Fuck that. I can't keep hurting them by hurting myself... It doesn't matter if you have all the valid reasons in the world to stop trying & stop caring... *There will still be reasons to care.* And you CANNOT ignore that. You can try to drown out that fact with booze & drugs... but you & I both know that you're hurting the people who care about you every time you stop trying. Whether its anorexia, alcoholism, depression or something else entirely: YOU ARE NEITHER ALONE IN YOUR STRUGGLES OR IN YOUR RECOVERY. You are only as alone as you choose to be & if you want to get better IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SEE YOURSELF IMPROVE: You cannot push away those that care & you have to keep caring & trying, for their sake, ESPECIALLY when every fiber of your being is telling you to stop trying. You can get better, you WILL get better. The first step is strengthening that commitment to improvement. You'll never be able to resist the negative forces if your Volition can't bolster your resolve. So save this video to a "Bad Day" playlist like me and let it remind you that: "This too shall pass" & you don't have to have hope for a better future to improve today, you just gotta be sick of allowing the status quo to continue. ✊️ And remember it'll all be worth it once you spin-kick your first racist square in the chest. 😂❤

During those long years when I struggled with trauma, anxiety and depression (and I still do to some extent), I had hoped to find someone that I could love and someone who could love me. It was only recently that I truly realized that there is one such person in my life and that's me. I hadn't extended the same love and compassion to myself that I was so ready to expel outward, to others. After realizing this, my own Volition had "woken up". Sure, I've always had it in me, but I felt like its strength has been somewhat renewed. I'm still a mess and I might always be like that. I may never heal completely, but unless I can love myself, my life will remain miserable. Volition represents healthy self-love that doesn't sugarcoat things, but also doesn't poison them with unnecessary pessimism.

I needed to hear this. As someone who listens to all the voices but Volition, it helps to hear a gentle voice that knows it's going to be okay and pushes to remind that in spite of how heavy everything feels. Thank you.

Reminds me of Kratos (of the reboot series) because the philosophy of stoicism that he's practicing has a lot in common with what Volition is saying.
