This game dug into me. When I played my first play through I was a jaded disillusioned detective that was sick and tired of the system. Luckily not an alcoholic, but this game spoke to me very deeply and made me realize I was done with law enforcement. It had ripped my humanity from me, made me mentally ill, made me depressed and sick all the time. This game was a microcosm of my entire career. Over a decade of death and seeing people being ground up in the machine changed me for good, but this game gave me hope.

But see to me that point is absolutely valid but the game also gives an answer to that feeling. The idea that giving into that melancholy is just as bad as the unmerited shit. To me, it’s a beautiful game about getting knocked down and getting back up. Addressing, then Compressing your shit and trying your best to be a better person for it. Harry got up every time, and so can I.

"This is real darkness. It is not death, not war, not child abuse. Real darkness has a face of love. The first death is in the heart, Harry." I'm 32 years old, I've been playing video games since I was a kid. From the moment I finished Disco Elysium I realised that I was in for something truly extraordinary, so much so that I have no words to describe the experience. It's the best game I've ever played, after a while I open the game, I walk around Revachol and I feel a strange sense of familiarity, I feel "at home". I grew to love all the characters, they are so well characterised that I came to understand them and above all I felt sympathy and pity for Harry. Without a doubt, this is a masterpiece that transcends the world of videogames. Sorry for my bad english.

Disco Elysium was an experience. I went into it with my apathetic gamer brain and it made me feel something. Even the small side stories were written with such empathy and sometimes crushed me in a very good way. The music captured and enhanced the atmosphere so well and I‘ll come back to this video again. I probably won’t replay the game any time soon because I feel like my story in Disco Elysium was told. It‘s not the kind of game in which I‘d want to unlock every ending.

British Sea Power really knocked it out of the park with soundtrack for this game. Every song managed to be distinctive, an enjoyable listen and also a perfect match for the environment it plays in and the emotions it’s meant to inspire. Like Martinaise, and Revachol as a whole, there’s this somber feeling of failure and regret for long gone tragedies within the songs, but always some element of hope, of stubborn optimism glinting under the surface. Elysium is a world that it is utterly fucked, the Insulindic a continent permanently scarred by the failure of the communist dream that was so brutally put down, and yet even as you yourself struggle not to be swallowed by the void, finding comfort in oblivion over being confronted by your past mistakes or worse having to accept that they have happened and truly move on from them… there still remain characters, like Acele or Cindy, Steban, Egg Head, Noid and Andre, the youth of revachol, who are determined to make something new from this rubble of a world. As such I’ve always found it weird when people describe the game as nihilistic or cynical, because I really feel that the game at its core is a refutation of those ideas: everything is fucked, and we can’t undo history, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still forge a new future

Ok, I was about to eat, so I was looking for a video to watch, saw this playlist, remembered how incredible it and the game was (didn't finish it, so guess what I'm playing tonight), then read your comment and kinda teared up while listening to Instrument of surrender. I think you are absolutely right about the game and the soundtrack (thanks for the band name btw, they are utterly amazing). I personally associate them both primarily with my own experience - the soul-tearing existential woe of realising how limited our time here is, that there will be a last time with every single person (and pet :( ) I know and love, one way or another; with me failing myself and others; with my struggle to embrace much needed change and other personal inadequacies. But at the same time the game and especially the soundtrack remind me how absolutely, incredibly gorgeous existance on this planet is, how there is always a warm glimmer of love, hope and joy just for their own sake, both within and without. This bittersweet mixture of somber melacholy and joyful gratitude has always been somewhere on my mind, sometimes background, sometimes foreground, and I too both love and hate it, but if someone came to me and offered to magically remove this specific feeling from my mind, I would refuse without a second thought. Seeing the beauty in the smallest things and always having love in my heart is well worth the melancholy, I think. And now my damn soup is cold.

I clicked onto this video thinking that disco elysium was a type of music genre, like electro swing, but I was surprised that it was actually a game of some sort (also that people in the comments really hold it close to their heart.) I may not know the sentimental value of this music to a lot of people, but man, hearing that first track with the melancholic trumpets playing sent me way back to a "golden age" in my childhood that was as bittersweet as the trumpets played. I've since been trying to look for a music compilation that plays that specific emotion of music without any luck until now. So even as someone who doesn't know much about the game itself, I really appreciated this video

In times like these we all get lost often, but we should remeber about our values, our rules, and above all else what kind of people we want to be. Just like in Disco Elysium. Yeh so this game was part of a very important moment in the history of my chronically depressed emotional life. While not the trigger itself it played a siginificant role during some days in which a new important development started to take place. It came exactly at the right time. A few years ago it might have meant little to nothing to me. While the story and character development were surely important -especially in the first few hours of the game- it was that soundtrack that hit me hard. To this day I still got some of those melodies stuck in my head and I am indescribably grateful for that. They still support me coping, growing, and simply not giving up. Thanks to whoever is responsible for that. Cheers

This morning I watched fog roll in on a video game I suddenly remembered being around 13 or 14 and playing Minecraft with a friend on her Xbox while our parents talked after lunch in the next room and was then hit by the realization that that time of my life is completely gone and I can never go back to those days. It wasn't even like some check engine light turned on in brain that signaled me being an adult. It was every little step towards leaving childhood behind; it's every time I think my father is right about me needing a nectar card; it's struggling to chose which type of bread I should buy at the store. Tears and scratches that are imperceptible on their own but add up to me being someone wholly different while wholly the same.

That first track's opening, good stuff. The trumpet sounds solitary and lonely. It calls out mournfully in search of a response from another. Like a ship lost at sea, sounding its horn in a foggy and moonless night, hoping to hear the horn of another nearby vessel - another of its kind. This ship however, has been adrift for years. Cast off and forgotten to the currents of the indifferent and expansive ocean. Its paint has slowly cracked and flaked off - replaced over time by a patina of orange rust and salt and grit. With no plotted course, and no power to move itself, the stranded ship is nowadays more akin to an island of metal: rough, coarse, and unwelcoming. It stands now as a fortress - and a prison - for its thinning crew. A place whose only visitors are the occasional flock of seagulls, who preen their feathers at the aimless bow before setting off once more. Where were they heading? Towards a landmass beyond the horizon? Or further out to sea to meet their end? The ship envied the gulls for that luxury they held. All it could do was sound its horn to tell the world that it still exists. It will continue to sound its mournful cry until the day someone acknowledges its distress, or the day it falls silent forevermore.

Lead writer Helen Hindpere has specifically said that Revachol is inspired by Tallinn, with a good amount of French influence and mysticism thrown on top of it: “Revachol sounded like the name of a city that could be the capital of another world. A place where (for some improbable, magical reason) Paris and Tallinn meet. A place with a very specific feeling that lingers on long after you’ve left.” (source: wireframe.raspberrypi.org/articles/disco-elysium-designing-the-city-of-revachol ). Having been to Tallinn, it's actually pretty easy to spot some of the similarities. The city used to have fairly big industrial and harbor districts that were dilapidating by the 90s (until a huge wave of industrial revitalization that began in the 2000s; now they look beautiful and have become really hip - although I'm sure that did bring some tension in itself because of gentrification), you can hear seagulls practically everywhere, and it's also easy to spot small old wooden churches around the city and near the port. Considering that the creators are originally from Estonia, it's no wonder that there's an immense amount of inspiration drawn from Tallinn & the Baltic region, as well as Easter Europe, when it comes to Revachol and the game's story.

To be honest it has a small cult following here in Russia as well, mostly among younger folks who did not catch USSR in their conscious years. I'm really curious to show the game to my father who was born in the 60s

@@arturs8463 Not only balts, Russians as well. Everyone suffered in this barn of nations, which is by the way perfectly portrayed in Disco Elysium.

I just now noticed that "The Cryptozoologists" is a guitar cover of "La Revacholiere" and I absolutely love it
