Another explanation is that the name "雞捲" came from Taiwanese. In Taiwanese, it sounds like "多ke 捲kueh" which means to put the extra ingredients in rolls. People make 雞捲 to avoid waste.
Despite of the small size, Taiwan holds a great variety of breakfast culture from city to city, even from township to township, and it surprises me every time even as a Taiwanese. There's this picture book titled Taiwan Breakfast Map (台灣早餐地圖)that can really help spotting the differences (not sure if the book has an English version though). Glad that your enjoying the breakfast feast!

Hi!! So glad you like our street food!! One quick reminder on 2:28 the text card says 護角餅 but it is actually 胡椒餅(it has really similar phonetic sounding lol) which literally means pepper bun. it’s a small savoury sesame bun, with a hot, peppery and green onion beef/pork filling. Anyway thanks for your video amd efforts :)

Well said, Mark! With that being said, you really ought to visit Tainan. As matter of fact, Tainan was the capital of Taiwan hundred of years ago, it's the core of Taiwanese cuisine with more traditional dishes that Taipei does not have. Taipei on the other hand, has more of an international vibe because of being the current capital of Taiwan and more accessible to the rest of the world. But if you really want to discover more Taiwanese dishes, Tainan has a lot more to offer.

@johnyang2

@@papipapi2301 How is the situation any different than him being in Taipei?
@commenter4898
11 ай бұрын
@@johnyang2 Very different. In Taipei there is pavement on all main streets, and in alleys there is now an area pained green for pedestrians. In Tainan most streets either don't have any pavement or the pavement is occupied by outdoor kitchen and motorcycles, so you have to walk on the motorway. In Taipei the traffic usually follows the traffic rules and would try to yield to or bypass the pedestrian. In Tainan the cars and motorcycles just expect pedestrians to yield to them and often don't follow the traffic rules. Taipei has good public transit, with their metro often ranked world #1 in user satisfaction. Tainan only has some bus lines and they are not very good.
Another origin of the name Chicken Roll is that chicken in the Taiwanese language sounds like "the leftovers" and people used to wrap whatever that's left in tofu skins and deep fry them. So in Taiwanese, it's actually "The leftover roll". Another amazing video. Thank you for visiting Taiwan Mark.

I’m so so so envious! Such delicious Taiwanese breakfast. I definitely miss Taiwan
I am eating Japanese A5 Wagyu ribeye while watching this video and I am willing to trade my A5 steak for that ultra-delicious Taiwanese food. Japanese food is delicious in general but Taiwanese food is the greatest in my opinion. I've been to Brazil, the UK, France, Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Latvia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many other places. Nothing so far can beat Taiwanese food.
What a way to showcase Taiwan. Will be there this summer.
I taught English at Shih Hsin University for a semester and it was the best experience of my life. The People are unbelievably hospitable and treat Westerners with the highest level of respect. Everyone is your friend. The night markets are absolutely spectacular. It’s like having a county fair 365 days a year! If you have an opportunity to teach English there, DO IT!!! 🙏
Thank you so much Mark for this amazing video ! I am so hungry and really want taiwanese food after watching it. I have been to Taiwan only once, and I really loved the food there. I think that food wise, is one of my favorite places on earth.

The mininum wage in TW is NTD168/around USD5.6 and it's easy for someone who wants to start a food business, because you don't need a permit and no one from the FDA will do the hygiene inspection periodically. That's why the food is affordable and variable.

Taipei sauces is the best I ever had. You can put it on a used tire and it will still be delicious. The Taipei seafood egg flat🍝 noodles I had was smothered in sauce with chunks of real crab🦀 & big shrimp🍤cooked perfectly topped with a butter garlic sauce. I been searching for this dish everywhere but can't find it so I guess it's just left a sweet memory like my grandparents.
