I'm so happy to be back in Taiwan, one of my favorite nations in the world! I was invited here by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau to cover parts of the island that I never knew existed, which led me down to the countryside to visit a few indigenous tribes. Did you know that the indigenous Taiwanese were the original settlers of the Philippines and many other Pacific Islands? I was fascinated to learn about this!
Along the 4 day journey around Taiwan with Deanna, I found it fascinating to see the difference between rural life and city life, which became the concept of this story. We went to Taiwan's second-biggest city called Kaohsiung to uncover the differences between Taiwan’s rural areas and its bustling cities. I was mesmerized by the amazing temples and delicious food! Finally, we made our way to Taipei where I take you on a journey to understand the wacky (yet fun) culture and experience a night market - one of the singular best things about Taiwan.
This is my Taiwan story, go create yours: www.mytaiwanstory.com/
P.S. - There are a few minor corrections to the video that I want to make - thank you to those who helped fact-check!
1) At 1:40: Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule from 1895 and left in 1945 at the end of World War II.
2) At 1:35: I misspoke - The Spanish and Dutch colonies were actually in the 17th century.
Thank you for watching and I'll see you next week!

Taiwan was one of the best places I’ve lived. When I first moved there I had a dream that the island was alive and it was female. It’s a magical place no doubt.
Taiwan is the most mountainous island in the world. Taiwan is considered to have the highest concentration of high mountains of any island in the world. In fact, 2/3rd of the island is covered in mountains. Even though Taiwan is subtropical, the peaks of these mountains receive snow in winter.

I am from Northern Borneo of Malaysia, one of the tribe shares the similarities between the Taiwanese Indigenous tribe. Fortunate enough to travel all over Taiwan and explore around the East side where majority of the Indigenous live. Man, I feel like home but at the same time my brain can't sync because everyone speak mandarin instead of Borneo indigenous language (Dusun or Murut) but the look feels like I'm back home. When I tell them I am Northern Borneo Indigenous, suddenly everyone wanted to be friend with me and check whether our culture and custom shares the similarities... Indeed there's a similarities. Wish I can visit again and stay longer on the East side of Taiwan.

Besides the aboriginals, most of the Chinese Malaysian and Chinese Taiwanese populations came from the same regions of Fujian/Hokkien and Guangdong/Canton areas hundreds of years ago. A lot of Taiwanese are classified as ethnic Chinese, but are actually mixed. For example, Taiwanese president Tsai is a mix of Hakka Chinese and Paiwan aboriginal, but since her grandfather is Hakka and her grand mother is Paiwan, Tsai is classified as Hakka Chinese.

That's interesting because I was in Taiwan about a week ago. I was amazed by Taipei, the safety, the cleanliness, people's sense of civility and all the good coffee shops (I'm a fan of coffee shops, this is the first thing I visit when I travel in a new city haha). I didn't visit the rural areas because I was afraid that it would be difficult to move without a car. But I could have visited Kaohsiung, I think the only reason why I didn't visit it was laziness. I'm also a huge fan of big cities so being in Taipei was incredibly amazing for me. I want to come again in January 2024. I'm living in Quebec, Canada and going back to Taiwan looks like a good idea to escape our annoying and depressing winters. I am a Taiwanese who came across your channel a few months ago. You are one of my favorite KZreadr and an amazing storyteller. Taiwanese people love food so much. There is a saying we use to greet each other. Instead of asking 'how are you?', we would say 'have you eaten?'. I believe food is a big part of our culture. You can also find something to eat 24/7 in Taiwan. Indigenous culture in Taiwan also fascinates me. Some professors believe that the origin of Austronesian ethnic groups is from Taiwan due to the diversity of languages and the evidence of Papermulberry seeds carried by indigenous people to other islands. However, research and discussions are still ongoing in the academic field. Taiwanese people are known for being super welcoming and friendly. Taiwan is definitely a hidden gem to explore. Great job, Drew. If you ever visit Taiwan, I would love to show you a different view of Taiwan.

Language, history and art of the austronesian indigenous is pretty important because its one of the oldest roots for the Austronesian expansion into the Philippines, then to Malaysia, Indonesia, then further to Madagascar, and east towards polynesia. It would be amazing to figure out the links between the mainland and Taiwan but I am pretty sure all of the austronesian traces at the Mainland (China) side is long gone due to assimilation.
Thanks Drew for putting much effort into this Taiwan video! The quality of your videos has improved over time!🎉❤Love from Singapore!!👍🇹🇼❤🇸🇬
I’m American born Chinese & my family was here in USA well before the Chinese civil war that caused the split between the mainland CCP & Taiwan ROC so I don’t have a real connection to politics of this. I visited Taiwan in 1977 & 2018 and see how much has changed between those times. Also much teacher when I was young was from one of traditional tribes of Taiwan so she taught us differences between Chinese & tribes. Thank you Drew for showing us the diverse cultures in Taiwan & Taipei is not only part Taiwan that you need visit.

My niece and her friend visited Taiwanas tourists. They enjoyed their stay there. They claimed that Taiwanese immigration and people were friendly to them. I am not sure if it applies to all pinoys. My niece is rich and so her friend. Cheers from Philippines.
I'm of Chinese heritage, the second generation of Chinese-American. I can get by in Taiwan because I can fluently speak Mandarin Chinese. In addition, I have not yet gone to other aboriginal villages in Taiwan, but I would like to visit and learn more about their local language. As a language enthusiast myself, I like to discover rare languages all over the world to find out how different they are than languages are widely spoken.
That’s the best video of Taiwan that I’ve ever seen, you are truly good at making videos. Taiwan it’s a rich and diversified country. 🌺 🇹🇼

My sister and I were just there for 3 days last Feb. and we loved it. We weren't able to get around much since it was non-stop raining but I had a lot of fun. The food was amazing!! I would certainly go back just to eat and eat.
This is why Drew is my favorite KZreadr, most of other KZreadrs don’t even dare to call Taiwan a country or nation. Just Go. 👍👍👍

This is probably the the best video I’ve ever seen introducing Taiwan in every aspect. The most amazing part is that almost every single one you talked with speaks English directly. Without the translation, there are no errors, and it allows them to express their feelings more precisely. Ps.I’m a Taiwanese and I’m really amazed by how good this video is.
I’m going to Taiwan in December and I’m so excited to explore the country! From Taipei to Jiufen, Yushan and much more! 🇹🇼

I have wanted to travel here for a very long time. A very unique democracy. I also understand that their national parks in the mountains are pretty amazing. Hope to go before there are complications (China) preventing from doing so.

Have been twice. have 2 children teaching in Taichung and was there again this Jan. Took a road trip around the island and highlights were Juifen Old Market, Tokora Gorge and Chimei Museum in Tainan. National Palace Museum in Taipei also a must plus all the night markets. Sun Moon Lake from 2000 visit well worth a visit. Safe, affordable and everything works. Coming from Cape Town its a wonderful change of culture.
Felt so peaceful just watching the video! Thank you 🙏 for the beautiful view from 🇹🇼 Taiwan
As a Taiwanese,I wanna say thank you for loving us
Fantastic as always - a friend of mine and his brother moved out there from the UK almost 20 years ago and absolutely love the country. I really hope to visit one day 🌞

This was an awesome video. Drew...you are so respectful of different cultures in all of your videos. I love the way you perfectly enunciate your words and your sense of awe, wonder, happiness and joy in living. Best vlogger ever.
Drew you have no idea how cool this was. When i first saw man from the tribe I thought he looked Filipino too because he looks just like someone I know who is half Filipino half white. I had no idea about the cultures in Taiwan. This was so interesting and cool, especially learning about the similarities with the Philippines. This is why I love your channel, I always learn something new. P.S. your wife is so maganda!
Yes, Drew! More visibility needs to be made for this beautiful, democratic island. I fell in love with Taipei and New Taipei City.
finally he made a full documentary about my country, 台灣!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I personally recognize Taiwan as a country.
Been there 4 times already. Street/Market food is the best. Amazing people.

Being a Pakistani unfortunately I can’t visit Taiwan on Pakistani passport coz taiwan isn’t recognised by Pakistan due to close relations with China but hope I’ll make it to there someday & somehow maybe on another passport if not Pakistani. Breathtaking place tbh

That doesn't have to be a hurdle. Taiwan isn't officially recognized by a bunch of countries, and I think all of them are welcome in Taiwan. For some countries there's visa-free entry, for others -like Pakistan- you need a visa.
